  • The performance improvement of each part for durability, safety and cost of high pressure storage system for fuel cell vehicle has been focused so far. However, for the mass production of fuel cell vehicle, it is necessary to evaluate durability and safety in system module and vehicle level. The test procedure to evaluate vibration and collision safety of high pressure hydrogen storage system for the fuel cell vehicle is established and its reliability is verified.

Effect of Pressure on Acoustic Pressure Response and NO Formation in Diluted Hydrogen-Air Diffusion Flames (희석된 수소-공기 확산 화염에서 음향파 응답과 NO 생성에 미치는 압력의 영향)

  • Acoustic pressure response and NO formation of hydrogen-air diffusion flames at various pressures are numerically studied by employing counterflow diffusion flame as a model flame let in turbulent flames in combustion chambers. The numerical results show that extinction strain rate increases linearly with pressure and then decreases, and increases again at high pressures. Thus, flames are classified into three pressure regimes. Such non-monotonic behavior is caused by the change in chemical kinetic behavior as pressure rises. Acoustic pressure response in each regime is investigated based on the Rayleigh criterion. At low pressures, pressure-rise causes the increase in flame temperature and chain branching/recombination reaction rates, resulting in increased heat release. Therefore, amplification in pressure oscillation is predicted. Similar phenomena are predicted at high pressures. At moderate pressures, weak amplification is predicted. Emission index of NO shows similar behaviors as to the peak-temperature variation with pressure.

  • In this study, ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubbers reinforced with various particle size of carbon black were prepared and tested. We followed recently published CSA/ANSI CHMC2 standard "the test methods for evaluating material compatibility in compressed hydrogen applications-polyemr". Measurement of change in hardness, tensile strength and volume were performed after exposure to maximum operating pressure, 87.5 MPa, for 168 hours (1 week). Once EPDM was exposed to high-pressure hydrogen, the samples experience volume increase and degradation of the physical properties. Also, after the dissolved hydrogen was fully eliminated from the specimens, the hardness and the tensile properties were not recovered. The rubber reinforced with smaller sizes of carbon black particles showed less volume expansion and decrease of physical properties. As a result, smaller particle size of carbon black filler led to more resistance to high-pressure hydrogen.

  • A compressed hydrogen tank is to be repressurized to 40 bar by being connected to a high-pressure line containing hydrogen at 50 bar and 25℃. Hydrogen filling time and the corresponding hydrogen temperature has been estimated when the filling process stopped according to several thermodynamic models. During the process of cooling the hydrogen tank, hydrogen temperature and pressure vs. time estimation was performed using Aspen Dynamics. Filling time, hydrogen temperature after filling hydrogen gas, cooling time and the final tank pressure after tank filling process have been completed according to the thermodynamic models are almost same.

  • In this research, for the smart health monitoring of the hydrogen storage high pressure composite vessel, the feasibility study of an embedded fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor is carried out. To verify strain measurement in various temperature environment which is needed for the hydrogen pressure vessel, tensile test of a composite specimen with both an embedded FBG sensor and a strain gauge is made in low temperature. Before we try a real-size hydrogen storage pressure vessel, a small & cheap composite pressure vessel having the same structure is fabricated with embedded FBG sensors and tested. In the case of an aluminum liner inside the vessel, survivability of FBG sensors at the interface is lower than the other areas.

  • Diaphragm compressors are used for a hydrogen compression because it can achieve high gas pressure with high purity. But diaphragm's lifetime may depend on the shape of the cavity and deflection from fluctuation the pressure change, which is necessary to monitored. In this study, the gas and hydraulic oil pressure in the cavity were measured as piston speed varies for diaphragm compressor. The results show pressure change quantities were reduced and maximum pressure points are delayed as the piston moves faster. And the hydraulic pressure were elevated as gas pressure elevated. And the compression period was more faster than expansion period.

  • Hydrogen refueling stations that use compressed hydrogen at high pressure provide safety distances between facilities in order to ensure safety. Most accidents occurring in hydrogen stations are accidental leaks. When a leak occurs, various types of ignition sources generate a jet flame. Therefore, the analysis of leaked gas diffusion and jet flame due to high pressure hydrogen leakage is one of the most important factor for setting the safety distance. In this study, the leakage accidents that occur in the hydrogen refueling station operated in high pressure environment are simulated for various leakage source sizes. The results of this study will be used as a reference for the future safety standards.

  • During last years, hydrogen refueling infrastructure test and devices research for hydrogen station presented a significant growth consisting of the commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). However, we still have many challenges for making commercial hydrogen stations such as increased safety and cost reduction. This study demonstrates the low cost hydrogen storage tank (type 2) and effective winding method for high pressure hydrogen storage. We use numerical analysis to verify stress changes inside the wire according to the winding condition. Also liner size, winding wire size and wire tension were studied for the safety and cost down. Results show that the stress of winding wire decreased with increased winding angle and increased the liner diameter. On the other hand, the stress of winding wire increased according to the increased wire thickness and tension.

  • A reformer is a device for producing hydrogen used in fuel cells. Among them, methanol steam reformer uses methanol as fuel, which is present as a liquid at room temperature. It has the advantage of low operating temperature, high energy density, and high hydrogen production. The purpose of this study is to improve the internal flow of the pressure vessel when a bundle of methanol steam reformer in the pressure vessel goes out to a single outlet. An analysis of equilibrium reaction to methanol steam reforming reaction was conducted using Aspen HYSYS® (Aspen Technology Inc., Bedford, USA), and based on the results, computational analysis was conducted using ANSYS Fluent® (ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, USA). For comparison of the results, the height of the pressure vessel, outlet diameter, and fillet was set as variables, and the optimum geometry was selected by comparing the effects of gravity and the amount of negative pressure.

An Analysis of Safety Management Items for Low Pressure Hydrogen Facility below 0.1MPa in Domestic Hydrogen Town (국내 수소타운 내 0.1MPa 이하 저압 수소 사용시설의 안전관리 항목 분석)

  • As the interest in hydrogen energy is being increased, it is a widely issue to develop a lot of hydrogen technologies in the field of production, storage, transportation, application and others. In the aftermath, there is a hydrogen town in Ul San, which is expected to expand application fields of hydrogen energy, as a demonstration project. The hydrogen town in Ul San can consist of high and low pressure part by the gas pressure. The high pressure part is managed by 'the high pressure gas safety control act'. And, low pressure part is managed by 'the guideline for the safety management of demonstration project of hydrogen town'. In this paper, to improve efficiency of safety management, the direction of safety management is reviewed by an analysis of low pressure hydrogen facility and safety management items. And then, some improvement directions are suggested. In the end, it is expected that the results of this study could help to activate construction of hydrogen town and improve efficiency of safety management as well.
