  • A high efficiency active clamp sepic-flyback converter is presented for fuel cell generation systems. The proposed converter is a superposition of a sepic converter mode and. flyback converter mode. The output voltages of the sepic converter mode and flyback converter mode can be regulated by the same PWM technique with constant frequency. By merging the sepic and flyback topologies, they can share the transformer, power MOSFET and active clamp circuit. The result has outstanding advantages over conventional active clamp DC-DC converters: high efficiency, high power density, and component utilization. Simulation results and experimental results are presented to verify the principles of operation for the proposed converter.

  • Strong restrictions on emissions from marine power plants (particularly $SO_x$, $NO_x$) will probably be adopted in the near future. In this paper, a combined solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and gas turbine fuelled by natural gas is proposed as an attractive option to limit the environmental impact of the marine sector. It includes a study of a heat-recovery system for 18 MW SOFC fuelled by natural gas, to provide the electric power demand onboard commercial vessels. Feasible heat-recovery systems are investigated, taking into account different operating conditions of the combined system. Two types of SOFC are considered, tubular and planar SOFCs, operated with either natural gas or hydrogen fuels. This paper includes a detailed thermodynamic analysis for the combined system. Mass and energy balances are performed, not only for the whole plant but also for each individual component, in order to evaluate the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In addition, the effect of using natural gas as a fuel on the fuel cell voltage and performance is investigated. It is found that a high overall efficiency approaching 70% may be achieved with an optimum configuration using SOFC system under pressure. The hybrid system would also reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and improve the total system efficiency.

  • In this paper, the two-stage DC-DC converter is proposed to make the control simple and to boost the low input voltage in the fuel cell generating system. The low efficiency of the conventional power converter is caused by a characteristic of the low-voltage and high-current in the fuel cell generating system. High-frequency transformer is needed to block the noise and to guarantee the safety of cell and load as a magnetically insulation. The proposed two-stage DC-DC converter for a fuel cell generation is more efficient than the traditional one-stage converter and easy to control. The design of a high-frequency transformer is also simple. Finally, the utility of the proposed converter is proved by the simulations and experiments.

  • This paper focuses on developing a model of a PEM fuel cell stack and to integrate it with realistic model of the air supply system for fuel cell vehicle application. The fuel cell system model is realistically and accurately simulated air supply operation and its effect on the system power and efficiency using simulation tool Matlab/Simulink. The Peak performance found at a pressure ratio of 3, and it give a 15mV increase per cell. The limit imposed is a minimum SR(Stoichiometric Ratio) of 2 at low fuel cell load and 2.5 at high fuel cell load.

  • Fuel cells are expected to be promising future power sources in both aspects of thermal efficiency and environmental friendliness. Accordingly, worldwide research and development efforts have been enormously increasing recently in various applications such as power plants, transportation and portable power sources. Among others, high temperature fuel cells, such as solid oxide fuel cells and molten carbonate fuel cells, are suitable for electric power plants. Moreover, their high operating temperature is quite appropriate to construct further advanced integrated systems. This paper reviews recent literatures on research and development of integrated power generation systems based on high temperature fuel cells. Research and development efforts are summarized in the area of fuel cell/ gas turbine hybrid systems, application of carbon capture technology to fuel cell systems, integration of coal gasification with fuel cells, and the use of alternative fuels.

  • In this paper, a new SEPIC-Flyback converter with a single transformer has been proposed, which is suitable for a fuel cell based power generation system. The proposed converter is superposition of sepic and flyback converter mode. It has outstanding high boosting output voltage, component utilization and high efficiency characteristics under the inherently severe low output voltage of the fuel cell generator. The proposed converter for a full cell generator is described and verified by simulation and experimental result that make used of the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell(PEMFC) Generator.

  • Polymer electrolyte fuel cells(PEFC) have been considered to be a suitable candidate for residential, portable and mobile applications, due to their high efficiency and power density, even at low operating temperature. KIER developed a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application and operated the system for over 1,000 hours. To develop a 5kW PEFC system, performance of a cell was improved through successive tests of single cell of small and large area. Fabrication of three 2,5 kW class stacks, design and fabrication of natural gas reformer, design of auxiliary equipments such as DC/DC converter, DC/AC inverter and humidifying units were carried out along with integration of components, operation and evaluation of total system. During the development period from 1999 to 2001, MEA(membrane electrode assembly) fabrication technologies, design and fabrication technologies for separators, stacking technologies and so on were developed, thereby providing basis for developing stacks of higher efficiency and power density in the future. Experience of development of natural gas reformer opened possibilities to use various kinds of fuels. Main results obtained from the development of a 5kW class PEFC system for residential application are summarized.

  • Generally, a coolant of the nuclear power plant is manufactured by electrolyzing the sea water near the plant for making the sodium hypochlorite(NaOCl), which is used for sterilizing the bacteria and the shellfishes sticking to the drains or the pumps at the outlet of the cooling system due to $8-10^{\circ}C$ warmer temperature than the inlet sea water. During manufacturing the sodium hypochlorite, the hydrogen with the high purity is also produced at the anode side of the electrolyzer. This paper describes a novel power plant system combined with the polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cell, the wasted hydrogen from the sea water electrolyzer and the wasted heat of the nuclear power plant. The present status over the exhausted hydrogen at twenty nuclear power plants in Korea was investigated in this study, from which an available power generation is estimated. Furthermore, the economic feasibility of the PEM fuel cell power plant is also evaluated by a current regulations over the power production and exchange using a renewable energy shown in Korea Power Exchange(KRX).
