The purpose of this research is to compare and analyze differences in modern 'Hyo' concepts and behaviors between the gifted and the general students of the elementary school. In this study, two groups(the gifted and the general students of the elementary school) were compared, in grade, birth-order, family members, education and religion factors in family, to seek for a better way to teach the Korean gifted students. The results are, as follows. First, the gifted had higher 'Hyo' concepts than the general students, because developments of the gifted in the field of intellect, emotion and will are faster than the general. The gifted had many interests in values and moral decisions. There are no meaningful differences between boys and girls in the gifted group. But in the general group, girls have higher 'Hyo' concepts than boys. This is because girls emotional developments are faster than boys. Second, in the gifted group, 5th graders have higher 'Hyo' concepts than 6th graders. On the other hand, in the general group, there are no meaningful differences between 5th graders and 6th graders. Third, there were no differences between the groups(gifted/general) by birth-order, family members and having religions or not. However, the comparison between nuclear families and large families shows that Korean traditional ethics - 'Hyo' is still in existence as a basic concept in the family, in spite of the changing family size and unit. In addition, in the family with a religion, the' Hyo' concept is revealed stronger than the other group. This is caused by the power of commanding love and affection which are emphasized through religions. From the results of this research, the gifted students of the elementary school have high consciousness concerning 'Hyo' concepts and behaviors. It is very essential for them to improve their 'Hyo' concepts until adulthood. Therefore, teachers and parents should pay more attention to help them improve their senses of Korean traditional morality - 'Hyo'.
Potato diseases, especially mosaics and leaf roll, appear to reduce potato yield in Korea more than any other factor. A seed potato certification program was established at the Alpine Experiment Station (AES) in 1961 to produce high quality seed potatoes for distribution to Korean farmers. The present program for production of certified seed of Namjak (Irish Cobbler), the only variety recommended for spring plantings, is outlined. In 1976, approximately 10,000 MT of certified grade Namjak seed was produced by members of two Seed Producers Cooperatives in the Daekwanryeong area for distribution by the Office of Seed Production and Distribution (OSPD). The seed was inspected and certified by officers of the National Agricultural Products Inspection Office (NAPIO). Although the quality of the certified seed is far superior to that used by many farmers, the supply planted less than 1/5 of the 1977 potato crop. Certified seed of Shimabara, the variety recommended for autumn plantings, is not produced in Korea. The yield response of virus infected seed to improved cultural practices is poor. Therefore, an increase in potato acreage and yields appears to be possible only if more good quality seed is used by Korean farmers. A two or three fold increase in seed supply would be desirable. The volume of seed could be increased by expanding the production area and by improving yield in seed fields. More land is available in the alpine area and good seed potatoes could be grown in other parts of Korea. Planting better quality seeds and using better cultural pracitces would improve seed yields. Several techniques could be used to improve the quality of elite seed produced at AES. Changes in seed potato certification program should be made so that healthy seed stocks of new varieties can be released rapidly.
This study conducted health assessment and multivariate vegetation analysis using the riparian vegetation index in 30 sites of the Geumgang mainstream and Mihocheon to obtain practical data on the river management of the Geumgang. The result showed that the number of plant communities was 54. The flora was 75 families, 185 genera, 243 species, 2 subspecies, 21 varieties, 2 varieties, and 268 taxa. The riparian vegetation index was 38.3 (3.3; G-D1 ~ 66.7; G-U2, G-U4, and G-M3), and the health of the rivers in this area was evaluated as normal (grade C). The health of rivers was the highest in the upper stream of Geumgang mainstream and lowest in the downstream of Geumgang mainstream. The relationship between riparian vegetation index and chlorophyll-a content was low. The riparian vegetation was divided into five groups of Digitaria ciliaris colony group, Salix gracilistyla colony group, Erigeron annuus colony group, the group dominated by Humulus japonicus, Salix koreensis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, and Phragmites japonica colonies, and the group dominated by Conyza canadensis and Echinochloa crusgalli var. echinata colonies. They had the similar health conditions. The CCA analysis showed that the environmental factors affecting the distribution of vegetation were physical factors such as vegetation area, artificial structure area, waterway area, branch width, channel width, and bank height and the biological factors such as the number of species. As such, it is necessary to maintain the health condition through continuous monitoring where the health condition is high and to apply active measures such as ecological restoration where the health condition is low.
Steel Plate for Rebar Connection was recently developed to splice rebars in delayed slab-wall joints in high-rise building, slurry wall-slab joints, temporary openings, etc. It consists of several couplers and a thin steel plate with shear key. Cyclic loading tests on slab-wall joints were conducted to verify structural behavior of the joints having Steel Plate for Rebar Connection. For comparison, joints with Rebend Connection and without splices were also tested. The joints with Steel Plate for Rebar Connection showed typical flexural behavior in the sequence of tension re-bar yielding, sufficient flexural deformation, crushing of compression concrete, and compression rebar buckling. However, the joints with Rebend Connection had more bond cracks in slabs faces and spalling in side cover-concrete, even though elastic behavior of the joints was similar to that of the joints with Steel Plate for Re-bar Connection. Consequently, the joints with Rebend Connection had less strengths and deformation capacities than the joints with Steel Plate for Re-bar Connection. In addition, stiffness of the joints with Rebend Connection degraded more rapidly than the other joints as cyclic loads were applied. This may be caused by low elastic modulus of re-straightened rebars and restraightening of kinked bar. For two types of diameters (13mm and 16mm) and two types of grades (SD300 and SD400) of rebars, the joints with Steel Plate for Rebar Connection had higher strength than nominal strength calculated from actual material properties. On the contrary, strengths of the joints with Rebend Connection decreased as bar diameter increased and as grade becames higher. Therefore, Rebend Connection should be used with caution in design and construction.

We developed problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting scientists' research process and analyzed the activities of science-gifted high school students, and the understanding and the effects of the programs after implementation in class. For this study, twelve science-gifted students in the 10th grade participated in the program, which consisted of three different modules - making a cycloidal pendulum, surface growth, and synchronization using metronomes. Diet Cola Test (DCT) was used to find out the effect on the improvement of the ability to design experiments by comparing pre/post scores, with a survey and an interview being conducted after the class. Each module consisted of a series of processes such as questioning the phenomenon scientifically, designing experiments to find solutions, and doing activities to solve the problems. These enable students to experience problem-solving type research process through the program class. According to this analysis, most students were likely to understand the characteristics of problem-solving type inquiry learning programs reflecting the scientists' research process. According to the students, there are some differences between this program class and existing school class. The differences are: 'explaining phenomenon scientifically,' 'designing experiments for themselves,' and 'repeating the experiments several times.' During the class students have to think continuously, design several experiments, and carry them out to solve the problems they found at first. Then finally, they were able to solve the problems. While repeating this kind of activities they have been able to experience the scientists' research process. Also, they showed a positive attitude toward the scientists' research by understanding problem-solving type research process. These problem-solving type inquiry learning programs seem to have positive effects on students in designing experiments and offering the opportunity for critical argumentation on the causes of the phenomena. The results of comparing pre/post scores for DCT revealed that almost every student has improved his/her ability to design experiments. Students who were accustomed to following teacher's instructions have had difficulty in designing the experiments for themselves at the beginning of the class, but gradually, they become used to doing it through the class and finally were able to do it systematically.

The goal of this study is to explore the characteristics of perceptual change among students majoring in arts on the nature of science and apply the results to science education. According to the study, it is important to consider the results of interaction between learners' aptitude and teaching method. Teaching the nature of science to first grade students explicitly, experimental inquiry strategy was applied to fine arts students, and teaching strategy of scientific history to music students. To find out which elements of the nature of science have come into view on modern philosophy of science, pre and post tests on the nature of science (VNOS-C) were conducted on the students. To find out specifically why views on the nature of science have changed, a case study was conducted focusing on students who showed changes in their views on the elements of the nature of science. In conclusion, this study suggests that by using experimental inquiry strategy and strategy of scientific history properly, it is possible to change students' viewpoints on the elements of the nature of science and on modern philosophy of science. Through explicit instruction, we were able to find some positive conceptual changes on the nature of science and the modern philosophy of science in terms of both quantity and quality. This shows that the students studying arts are experiencing a constructivist conceptual change on the nature of science, and that conceptual ecology and learning strategy are involved in this process. Therefore, it is thought that this study offers an important implication in organizing science education on the nature of science.

The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in adolescent's academic motivation, which is composed of intrinsic learning motivation and extrinsic learning motivation, by family strengths and parent's expectation styles. The subject of this study were 508 students who were selected at random from second, and third grade of middle school in Daegu. Factor analysis and MANOVA were employed for data analysis and Scheff test for post - hoc analysis. The main findings of this study were as follows: First, there were significant differences in learning motivation of adolescents according to the degree of family strengths. More specifically, adolescents who perceived their family strengths to be high had higher intrinsic learning motivation than adolescents who perceived their family strengths to be middle and low. Second, there were significant differences in intrinsic learning motivation of adolescents according to the parent's academic expectation styles. Adolescents who perceived their parent's academic expectation styles paternal support-maternal support, paternal pressure-maternal support, and paternal support-maternal pressure showed higher intrinsic learning motivation than adolescents who perceived their parent's academic expectation styles paternal pressure-maternal pressure. Third, there were significant differences in intrinsic learning motivation of adolescents according to the parent's academic expectation styles and the degree of family strengths. In adolescents group who perceived their family strengths to be low, adolescents who perceived their the parent's academic expectation styles to be paternal support-maternal support, paternal pressure-maternal support and paternal support-maternal pressure had higher intrinsic learning motivation than adolescents who perceived their the parent's academic expectation styles to be paternal pressure-maternal pressure.
To investigate differences between the metabolic ratios of normal controls and brain tumors such as astrocytomas and glioblastoma multiforme (GM) by proton MR spectroscopy (MRS) at 37 high field system. Using 3T MRI/MRS system, localized water-suppressed single-voxel technique in patients with brain tumors was employed to evaluate spectra with peaks of N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline-containing compounds (Cho), creatine/phosphocreatine (Cr) and lactate. On the basis of Cr, these peak areas were quantificated as a relative ratio. The variation of metabolites measurements of the designated region in 10 normal volunteers was less than 10%. Normal ranges of NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios were 1.67$\pm$018 and 1.16$\pm$0.15, respectively. NAA/Cr ratio of all tumor tissues was significantly lower than that of the normal tissues (P=0.005). Cho/Cr ratio of glioblastoma multiforme was significantly higher than that of astrocytomas (P=0.001). Lactate was observed in all tumor cases. The present study demonstrated that the neuronal degradation or loss was observed in all tumor tissues. Higher grade of brain tumors was correlated with higher Cho/Cr ratio, indicating a significant dependence of Cho levels on malignancy of gliomas. This results suggest that clinical proton MR spectroscopy could be useful to predict tumor malignancy.

Background : The purpose of this study was to analyze the smoking habits in patients with lung cancer and identify any difference of prevalence according to histologic types of lung cancer. Methods : The data were calculated by total amounts of tar and nicotine inhaled during the whole lifetime according to variation of smoking habit. This study was to investigated any difference of prevalence in lung cancer according to smoking habits. The subjects comprised 150 lung cancer cases and 300 hospital control cases that were matched by age and sex. Smoking habits during the whole lifetime were surveyed by standardized questionnaire. Odds ratios were estimated by unconditional logistic regression analysis. Results : There were 104 male and 34 female lung cancer cases. By histologic type, there were 53 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 67 of adenocarcinoma and 30 of small cell lung carcinoma. The differences between lung cancer cases and controls according to smoking habits were total duration of smoking, total pack years of smoking and number of cigarettes smoked per day during the previous two years. The odds ratio were higher in Kreyberg I, but not in Kreyberg II, for the longer duration of smoking, the greater total pack years of cigarettes consumed, the more cigarettes smoked per day during the previous two years, the longer duration on non-filter smoking, the earlier life cases who began to smoke, and the higher amounts of calculated total tar and nicotine inhaled over the whole lifetime. When we added grade of inhalation to calculation of amounts of tar and nicotine inhaled over the lifetime, the odds ratios of total inhalation amounts of tar and nicotine were as high as those the without them. Conclusions : This study reconfirmed that smoking habits were strongly associated with lung cancer and that there were different associations between smoking habits and histologic types of lung cancer. In particular, calculations of total tar and nicotine amounts inhaled over the whole lifetime were calculated for the first time in trials from lung cancer epidemiologic studies.

The Purpose of this study is to provide the basic data for the improvement or the contents or clothing curriculum in the 7th technology home economics of middle school. The standard of satisfaction of students' according to the detail domains and the standard of necessity and practical use and learners' patterns of activity task suggested in textbooks were evaluated. The ninth grade 169 boy students and 336 girl students in the national capital region were participated in this survey. According to the survey results, firstly, a dress domain got the highest relative importance(28.56%) while a clothes material domain took the lowest relative importance(8.07%) among various detail domains. Secondly, the standard of satisfaction according to each detail domain fell below the average. Generally girls' satisfaction for teaching was higher than boys'. Thirdly, a clothes material domain showed the lowest necessity for textbook contents according to detail domain and other domains showed above the average. The necessity for textbook contents appeared high for boy students rather than girl students. In addition, boy and girl students did not have interest in content relevance in textbook. Especially, they could not do well and understand experiments and practices in clothing section. Finally, The degree of utilization of the activity task ill textbooks was very low. Among various activity tasks, the learning by discovering and exploring were more utilized than cooperating learning.
