Three-phase current is reconstructed from the dc-link current in an AC machine drive with a single current sensor. Switching pattern modification methods, in which the magnitude of the effective voltage vector is secured over its minimum, are investigated to accurately reconstruct the three-phase current. However, the existing methods that modify the switching pattern cause voltage and current distortions that degrade sensorless performance. This paper proposes a variable-magnitude voltage signal injection method based on a high frequency voltage signal injection. The proposed method generates a voltage reference vector that ensures the minimum magnitude of the effective voltage vector by varying the magnitude of the injection signal. This method can realize high quality current reconstruction without switching pattern modification. The proposed method is verified by experiments in a 600W Interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) drive system.
This paper proposes a neutral-point voltage ripple reduction of high frequency injection sensorless control of IPMSM fed by a three-level inverter. The high frequency voltage injection method has been successfully applied to sensorless control for IPMSM at low speed region. In the process of high frequency voltage injection sensorless control for IPMSM, the neutral-point voltage ripple is increased. It should be reduced because it distorts the output current and decreases a life time of DC-link capacitor. The proposed method in this paper reduces the neutral-point voltage ripple by compensating the reference voltage, and the compensation value is calculated simply with reference voltages and currents. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results.
This paper presents a sensorless speed control of IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using the high-frequency (HF) square wave injection method. In the proposed HF pulsating square wave injection method, injection voltage is applied into the estimated d-axis of rotor and high-frequency induced q-axis current is considered to estimate the rotor position. Conventional square wave injection methods may need complex demodulation process to find rotor position, while in the proposed method, an easy demodulation process based on the rising-falling edge of the injected voltage and carrier induced q-axis current is implemented, which needs less processing time and improves control bandwidth. Unlike some saliency-based sensorless methods, the proposed method uses maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) strategy, instead of zero d-axis command current strategy, to improve control performance. Furthermore, this paper directly uses resultant d-axis current to detect the magnet polarity and eliminates the need to add an extra pulse injection for magnet polarity detection. As experimental results show, the proposed method can quickly find initial rotor position and MTPA strategy helps to improve the control performance. The effectiveness of the proposed method and all theoretical concepts are verified by mathematical equations, simulation, and experimental tests.

This paper presents an improved signal processing technique in the square-wave-type voltage injection method for IPMSM sensorless drives. Since the sensorless method based on the square-wave voltage injection does not use low-pass filters to get an error signal for estimating rotor position and allows the frequency of the injected voltage signal to be high, the sensorless drive system may achieve an enhanced control bandwidth and reduced acoustic noise. However, this sensorless method still requires low-pass and band-pass filters to extract the fundamental component current and the injected frequency component current from the motor current, respectively. In this paper, these filters are replaced by simple arithmetic operations so that the time delay for estimating the rotor position can be effectively reduced to only one current sampling. Hence, the proposed technique can simplify its whole signal process for the IPMSM sensorless control using the square-wave-type voltage injection. The proposed technique is verified by the experiment on the 800W IPMSM drive system.
This paper proposes a new THD reduction algorithm for modular multilevel converters (MMCs) with offset voltage injection operated in nearest level modulation (NLM). High voltage direct current (HVDC) is actively introduced to the grid connection of offshore wind powers, and this paper deals with a voltage generation technique with an MMC for wind power generation. In the proposed method, third harmonic voltage is added for reducing the THD. The third harmonic voltage is adjusted so that each of the pole voltage magnitudes maintains a constant value with a maximum number of (N+1) levels, where N is the number of sub-modules per arm. By using the proposed method, the THD of the output voltage is mitigated without increasing the switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method has advantageous characteristics such as simple implementation. As a part of this study, this paper compares the THD results of the conventional method and the proposed method with offset voltage injection to reduce the THD. In this paper, simulations have been carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, and the proposed method is implemented by a HILS (Hardware in the Loop Simulation) system. The obtained results show agreement with the simulation results. It is confirmed that the new scheme achieved the maximum level output voltage and improved the THD quality.

This paper proposes a sensorless control approach for Wound Rotor Synchronous Machines (WRSMs) based on a high frequency voltage signal injection into the stator side U phase and VW line, respectively. Considering the machine itself as a rotor position sensor, the rotor position observer is established according to the principles of the rotary transformer. A demodulation method for the high frequency signal inducted in the rotor is proposed as well. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed sensorless control approach has high performance and good practicability.
Offline inductance identification of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is essential for the design of the closed-loop controller and position observer in sensorless vector controlled drives. On the base of the offline inductance identification method combining direct current (DC) offset and high frequency (HF) voltage injection which is fulfilled at standstill, this paper investigates the inverter nonlinearity effects on the inductance identification while considering harmonics in the induced HF current. The negative effects on d-q axis inductance identifications using HF signal injection are analyzed after self-learning of the inverter nonlinearity characteristics. Then, both the voltage error and the harmonic current can be described. In addition, different cases of voltage error distribution with different injection conditions are classified. The effects of inverter nonlinearities on the offline inductance identification using HF injection are validated on a 2.2 kW interior PMSM drive.
This paper presents compact low frequency ultra-wide band (UWB) sensor design and study of the partial discharge diagnosis by sensing electromagnetic pulse emitted from the partial discharge source with the newly designed UWB sensor. In this study, we designed a new type of compact low frequency UWB sensor based on microstrip antenna technology to detect both the low frequency and high frequency band of the partial discharge signal. Experiments of offline PD testing on medium voltage (22.9kV) underground cable mention the comparative results with the traditional HFCT as a reference sensor in the laboratory. In the series of comparative tests, the calibration signal injection test provided with the conventional IEC 60270 method and high voltage injection testing are included.

This paper proposes a field-oriented control strategy without speed sensor in overall speed range. At low speed region including zero speed, the electrical saliency which is due to the main flux saturation is used in order to estimate an instantaneous flux position. This electrical saliency can be obtained from the difference of high frequency impedance by the high frequency signal injection. This method enables the stable operation at zero speed or stator frequency even under heavily loaded condition. However, because of the high frequency signal injection the loss and noise in motor increase and the voltage margin is reduced as the motor speed increases. Therefore, this algorithm must be supplemented with the algorithm based on the electrical model of motor, which is conventionally used in the region except the low speed. This paper proposes the combination algorithm between the high frequency signal infection method and the adaptive observer, in which the rotor flux and motor speed can be simultaneously estimated by the adaptive control theory. This combination algorithm enables the stable operation of field-oriented speed control without speed sensor in overall speed range. This is verified by experimental results.
This paper compares the sensorless control performance according to the applied voltage waveform by injecting sinusoidal, triangular, and square waveform in the harmonic injection sensorless control method. By injecting various voltage shape waveform with a frequency of 1kHz, the error amount of the estimated angle for each waveform is compared and analyzed. For the experiment, the HILS(hardware in the loop simulation) system was used. The hardware is the control board, and the inverter and motor models implemented in Simulik are located in the real-time simulator. The control algorithm is implemented by the FPGA control board, which includes a PWM interrupt service routine with a frequency of 10 kHz, harmonic injection and position detection sensorless algorithm.
