  • Compared to the present clinical field strengths, MR at 47 and above promises to improve anatomic imaging quality by factors, and to bring metabolic and functional imaging to the forefront of research and diagnostic modalities. While human bore sized magnets as high as 9.4T are now installed, realization of the potential benefit of these magnets will require more of the MR system than a simple field, frequency or power scaling from technologies used at lower fields. New constraints on the high field MR studies, both physical and physiological, will require new technical developments to be considered for the highest field systems.

  • At present, the trend of magnetic field strength in MRI system is dramatically changing. In early 70, the only low field (<0.5T) was developed. It was technically difficult to develop the high field system. At that time, people believed that the fine MR imaging could not be obtained in the high field MR system due to the magnetic susceptibility effect. However, 1.5T system was evolved at the end of 80, and used for clinical usage. Thus, it was proved that the signal to noise ratio (SNR) could be greatly contribute to enhance the image quality. And, the results of functional MRI and MR spectroscopy could be improved in the higher field MR system. So, 8T system was eventually developed in Ohio State University Hospital at the end of 90. Therefore, there is no doubt that the system with the ultra high magnetic field strength will be developed near future in 21 century.

  • In this study, a MR(Magneto-rheological) brake to obtain high torque-to-size ratio instead of conventional powder brake is presented for high-tension control of converting machinery such as coater, slitter and so on. First, to obtain the higher performance than conventional powder brake, a MR brake with a modified rotor shape is newly designed and analyzed by using electromagnetic field analysis. Second, a prototype of the MR brake is fabricated with the optimized structural parameters and an experimental apparatus is constructed. Finally, basic characteristics between current and torque are experimentally investigated.

  • The control performance of a vehicle installed with an MR(magnetorheological) fluid-based damper is investigated on the basis of Herschel-Bulkley shear model. Generally, most of MR fluid damper has been analyzed based on a simple Bingham-plastic shear model. However, the Bingham-plastic shear model can not well describe the behavior of the damper on the condition of high velocity and high current field input. Therefore, in this study, the Herschel-Bulkley shear model in which the constant post-yield plastic viscosity in Bingham model is replaced with a power law model dependent on shear rate is used to assess control performance of a vehicle with MR fluid damper suspension system. This study deals with a two-degree-of-freedom suspension using the MR fluid damper for a quarter car model. The response for the bump input to identify the fastness of MR fluid damper embedded skyhook controller and requested magnetic field are investigated.

  • MR fluid is a suspension of micrometer-sized magnetizable particles in silicon oil and a functional fluid whose apparent viscosity can be controlled by the applied magnetic field strength. In this paper, a rotary brake using MR fluid called MR brake for tension control of precision machinery such as roll-to-roll printing machinery is presented. First, to obtain the higher performance than conventional powder brake, a MR brake with a modified rotor shape is newly designed and analyzed using FEM. Second, the prototype of MR brake is fabricated with the optimized structural parameters and an experimental apparatus is constructed. Then, basic characteristics of the MR brake are investigated with the different MR fluids. Finally, the validity of the developed MR brake is verified through the comparison with the conventional powder brake.

  • Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid is suspension of fine magnetic particles in a liquid carrier such as silicon oil or water. MR fluid exhibits solid-like mechanical behavior into chain or clusters with high yield stress when magnetic field is applied to the particles. The response of MR fluids is very quick and reversible after removal of the field. MR Fluids have high yield stress (up to 5kPs) and operate in low voltage power supply. Recently, MR damper using MR fluids was open used in vibration control system such as structural devices, seat vibration controllers and helicopter rotor systems, but it is too big in size and heavy. Therefore, it is not appreciate to rehabilitation devices such as prosthetic limbs.

  • This paper presents vibration control performances of a commercial magnetorheological (MR) suspension via new control strategy considering hysteresis of the field-dependent damping force of MR damper. A commercial MR damper which is applicable to high class passenger vehicle is adopted and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. Preisach hysteresis model for the MR damper is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. Then, a feed-forward compensation strategy for the MR damper is formulated and integrated with a linear quadratic regulation (LQR) feedback controller for the suspension system. Control performances of the proposed control strategy for the MR suspension is experimentally evaluated with quarter vehicle test facility.

  • This paper presents development of flow control valve using MR fluid. Generally, since the apparent viscosity of MR fluids is adjusted by applying magnetic fields, the MR valves can control high level fluid power without any mechanical moving parts. In this paper, flow control valve using MR fluid on the behavior of the magnetic field influence on the numerical analysis of more accurate electromagnetic parameters were obtained, even if when magnetic field apply inside of surrounding MR fluid from electromagnet, more realistic designing way analysis of characteristic of whole magnetic field distribution is suggested by surrounding magnetic material. Also, comparison of flow rate inlet and outlet, behavior of MR fluid in experiments proposed. A new type of flow control valve using MR fluid is proposed by analysis of behavior of MR fluid in experiments.

  • This paper proposes a vehicle detector with a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor. The detector consists of a MR sensor and mechanical and electronic apparatuses. Composed of six magnetically variable resistors, the MR sensor senses disturbance of the earth's magnetic field caused by a moving vehicle over itself and then produces an output indicative of the moving vehicle. Experiments have been carried out with three stages. At the first stage, the outputs of the sensor have been analyzed to show the validity of the detector's circuit and the detecting method. At the second stage, the detector has been tested on a local highway in Korea. Through the field tests, the outputs of the detector in response to various kinds of moving vehicles have been collected and analyzed. At the final stage, to verify the performance of the detector, traffic volumes on the highway have been measured with the detector and compared with the exact traffic volumes in a highly congested traffic.
