Operation of the interleaved Boost PFC converter in Critical Conduction Mode (CrM) shows the advantages of high efficiency and good EMI characteristics owing to the valley switching of FET. However, when it is designed for a highly pulsating load, operation at a relatively high frequency is inevitable at non-pulsating typical load condition, resulting in efficiency degradation. Moreover, the physical size of the inductor becomes problematic because of the nature of the CrM operation, where the inductor peak current is about two times the inductor average current, thereby requiring high DC-bias characteristics, which is worse when the output power is high. In this study, a new parallel driving method of two sets of interleaved boost PFC converters for highly pulsating high-power application is proposed. The proposed method does not require any additional load-sharing controller, resulting in high efficiency and smaller inductor size.
A passive lossless turn-on/turn-off snubber network is proposed for the boost PWM converter. Previous AC/DC PFC Boost Converter perceives feed forward signal of output for average current-mode control. Previous Boost Convertor, the Quantity of input current will be decreased by the decrease of output current in light load, and also Power factor comes to be decreased. Also the efficiency of converter will be decreased by the decrease of power factor. The proposed converter presents the good PFC, low line current harmonic distortions and tight output voltage regulations using energy recovery circuit. All of the semiconductor devices in the converter are turned on under exact or near zero voltage switching(ZVS). No additional voltage and current stresses on the main switch and main diode occur. To show the superiority of this converter is verified through the experiment with a 640W, 100kHz prototype converter.
The implementation and performance evaluation of an interleaved boundary conduction mode (BCM) boost power factor correction (PFC) converter is presented in this paper by employing three wide band-gap switching devices: a super junction silicon (Si) MOSFET, a silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET and a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT). The practical considerations for adopting wide band-gap switching devices to BCM boost PFC converters are also addressed. These considerations include the gate drive circuit design and the PCB layout technique for the reliable and efficient operation of a GaN HEMT. In this paper it will be shown that the GaN HEMT exhibits the superior switching characteristics and pronounces its merits at high-frequency operations. The efficiency improvement with the GaN HEMT and its application potentials for high power density/low profile BCM boost PFC converters are demonstrated.
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain has more than one energy source including a high-voltage electric battery. However, for a high voltage electric battery, the average current is relatively low for a given power level. Introduced to increase the voltage of a HEV battery, a compact, high-efficiency boost converter, sometimes called a step-up converter, is a dc-dc converter with an output voltage greater than its input voltage. The inductor occupies more than 30% of the total converter volume making it difficult to get high power density. The inductor should have the characteristics of good thermal stability, low weight, low losses and low EMI. In this paper, Mega Flux® was selected as the core material among potential core candidates. Different structured inductors with Mega Flux® were fabricated to compare the performance between the conventional air cooled and proposed potting structure. The proposed inductor has reduced the weight by 75% from 8.8kg to 2.18kg and the power density was increased from 15.6W/cc to 56.4W/cc compared with conventional inductor. To optimize the performance of proposed inductor, the potting materials with various thermal conductivities were investigated. Silicone with alumina was chosen as potting materials due to the high thermo-stable properties. The proposed inductors used potting material with thermal conductivities of 0.7W/m·K, 1.0W/m·K and 1.6W/m·K to analyze the thermal performance. Simulations of the proposed inductor were fulfilled in terms of magnetic flux saturation, leakage flux and temperature rise. The temperature rise and power efficiency were measured with the 40kW boost converter. Experimental results show that the proposed inductor reached the temperature saturation of 107℃ in 20 minutes. On the other hand, the temperature of conventional inductor rose by 138℃ without saturation. And the effect of thermal conductivity was verified as the highest thermal conductivity of potting materials leads to the lowest temperature saturations.
This paper offers two Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) systems for Photovoltaic (PV) applications. The first MPPT method is based on a fixed frequency Model Predictive Control (MPC). The second MPPT technique is based on the Predictive Hysteresis Control (PHC). An experimental demonstration shows that the proposed techniques are fast, accurate and robust in tracking the maximum power under different environmental conditions. A DC/DC converter with a high voltage gain is obligatory to track PV applications at the maximum power and to boost a low voltage to a higher voltage level. For this purpose, a high gain Switched Inductor Quadratic Boost Converter (SIQBC) for PV applications is presented in this paper. The proposed converter has a higher gain than the other transformerless topologies in the literature. It is shown that at a high gain the proposed SIQBC has moderate efficiency.
This paper proposes a new high efficiency single-phase AC-DC boost converter for power factor correction. Lossless commutation circuit is interposed in the proposed converter for soft-switching. Due to this commutation circuit, the converter operates in 9 mode. In spite of changing input voltage and load, It attracts a constant DC output voltage because of the PWM control scheme using both the output voltage feedback and the input voltage feedforward. The converter is suitable for high power applications and operates in continuous conduction mode. In this paper, a 2.4[kW] converter is designed and simulated.
Power conversion system must be increased switching frequency in order to achieve a small size, a light weight and a low noise. However, the switches of converter are subjected to high switching power losses and switching stresses. As a result of those, the power system brings on a low efficiency. In this paper, the authors propose a DC-DC boost converter of high power by partial resonant switch method (PRSM). The switching devices in a proposed circuit are operated with soft switching and the control technique of those is simplified for switch to drive in constant duty cycle. The partial resonant circuit makes use of a inductor using step up and a condenser of loss-less snubber. Also the circuit has a merit which is taken to increase of efficiency, as it makes to a regeneration at input source of accumulated energy in snubber condenser without loss of snubber in conventional circuit. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of system is high. The proposed converter is deemed the most suitable for high power applications where the power switching devices are used.
Combination the several type of single phase power conversion utilized simply topology are proposed in this paper. Totally four kind of converter are investigated, they are Boost AC/AC Converter, Buck AC/AC Converter, Boost AC/DC Converter, and Buck DC/AC Converter. Two types action mode are presented to determine the functional of circuit. First is AC chopper action mode, representation of the AC/AC converter. AC chopper action mode offered the sinusoidal current waveform, better power factor, faster dynamics, and smaller input/output filter. They present high robustness, offer safe commutation and have high efficiency. The second is full bridge action mode, determined the transformation AC to DC power and otherwise. Four switching devices and one magnetic contactor will establish the mode operation of circuit and manage the flow of power proceed in proper. The correction and advance of the kind of converter are verified by simulation.
In this paper, a buck-boost type battery charger is developed for charging battery set with a lower voltage. This battery charger is configured by a rectifier circuit, an integrated boost/buck power converter and a switched capacitors circuit. A boost power converter and a buck power converter sharing a common power electronic switch are integrated to form the integrated boost/buck power converter. By controlling the common power electronic switch, the battery charger performs a hybrid constant-current/constant-voltage charging method and gets a high input power factor. Accordingly, both the power circuit and the control circuit of the developed battery charger are simplified. The switched capacitors circuit is applied to be the output of the boost converter and the input of the buck converter. The switched capacitors circuit can change its voltage according to the utility voltage so as to reduce the step-up voltage gain of the boost converter when the utility voltage is small. Hence, the power efficiency of a buck-boost type battery charger can be improved. Moreover, the step-down voltage gain of the buck power converter is reduced to increase the controllable range of the duty ratio for the common power electronic switch. A prototype is developed and tested to verify the performance of the proposed battery charger.
This paper proposed a new partial resonant 3.PHI. AC-DC boost converter of high efficiency using lossless snubber. The proposed converter, DCM (Discontinuous Current Mode) has a merit of simple controlled circuit because the input current control discontinuously. But turned off switching loss and stress of the switching device increase when the switch turned off at the peak of current. Therefore, the paper improves efficiency by adopting the PRS$^{2}$(Partial Resonant Soft Switching) in 3.PHI. AC-DC boost converter and makes the unity power factor. The PRS$^{2}$ is reduced a current/voltage stresses of switching devices. Also, a DCMPRS$^{2}$M(Discontinuous Conduction Mode Partial Resonant Soft Switching Method) appear the current and voltage equation of this circuit. The paepr examine in a 3.PHI. AC-DC boost converter and show the result of that.
