  • In the present study, $TiB_2-Co$ composite coatings were thermally sprayed onto the surface of a 304 stainless steel substrate using an atmospheric plasma spray (APS). The phase analysis of the powders and plasma-sprayed coatings was performed using X-ray diffractometry analysis. The microstructures of the coatings were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average particle size and flowability of the feedstocks were also measured. Both $TiB_2-32Co$ and $TiB_2-45Co$ (wt.%) coatings possessed typical dense lamellar structures and high-quality adhesion to the substrate. The oxidation behaviors of the coatings were studied at $900^{\circ}C$ in an atmospheric environment. In addition, the cross-sectional images of the oxidized coatings were analyzed by SEM. A thin and well-adhered layer was formed on the surface of both $TiB_2-Co$ coatings, confirming satisfactory high-temperature oxidation resistance. The kinetic curves corresponding to the isothermal oxidation of the coatings illustrated a short transient stage from rapid to slow oxidation during the early portion of the oxidation experiment.

  • High oxidation temperature of SiC shows a tendency of carbide formation at the interface which results in poor MOSFET transfer characteristics. Thus we developed oxidation processes in order to get low interface charge densities. N-type 6H-SiC MOS capacitors were fabricated by different oxidation processes: dry, wet, and dryreoxidation. Gate oxidation and Ar anneal temperature was $1150^{\circ}C.$ Ar annealing was performed after gate oxidation for 30 minutes. Dry-reoxidation condition was $950^{\circ}C,$ H2O ambient for 2 hours. Gate oxide thickness of dry, wet and dry-reoxidation samples were 38.0 nm, 38.7 nm, 38.5 nm, respectively. Mo was adopted for gate electrode. To investigate quality of these gate oxide films, high frequency C- V measurement, gate oxide leakage current, and interface trapped charge densities (Dit) were measured. The interface trapped charge densities (Dit) measured by conductance method was about $4\times10^{10}[cm^{-1}eV^{-1}]$ for dry and wet oxidation, the lowest ever reported, and $1\times10^{11}[cm^{-1}eV^{-1}]$ for dry-reoxidation

  • The U metal chips generated in developing nuclear fuel and a gamma radioisotope shield have been stored under immersion of water in KAERI. When the water of the storing vessels vaporizes or drains due to unexpected leaking, the U metal chips are able to open to air. A new oxidation treatment process was raised for a long time safe storage with concepts of drying under vacuum, evaporating the containing water and organic material with elevating temperature, and oxidizing the uranium metal chips at an appropriate high temperature under conditions of controlling the feeding rate of oxygen gas. In order to optimize the oxidation process the uranium metal chips were completely dried at higher temperature than $300^{\circ}C$ and tested for oxidation at various temperatures, which are $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, and $500^{\circ}C$. When the oxidation temperature was $400^{\circ}C$, the oxidized sample for 7 hours showed a temperature rise of $60^{\circ}C$ in the self-ignition test. But the oxidized sample for 14 hours revealed a slight temperature rise of $7^{\circ}C$ representing a stable behavior in the self-ignition test. When the temperature was $500^{\circ}C$, the shorter oxidation for 7 hours appeared to be enough because the self-ignition test represented no temperature rise. By using several chemical analyses such as carbon content determination, X-ray deflection (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR) and Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) on the oxidation treated samples, the results of self-ignition test of new oxidation treatment process for U metal chip were interpreted and supported.

  • Graphite has hexagonal closed packing structure with two bonding characteristics of van der Waals bonding between the carbon layers at c axis, and covalent bonding in the carbon layer at a and b axis. Graphite has high tolerant to the extreme conditions of high temperature and neutron irradiations rather than any other materials of metals and ceramics. However, carbon elements easily react with oxygen at as low as 400C. Considering the increasing production of today of hydrogen and electricity with a nuclear reactor, study of oxidation characteristics of graphite is very important, and essential for the life evaluation and design of the nuclear reactor. Since the oxidation behaviors of graphite are dependent on the shapes of testing specimen, critical care is required for evaluation of nuclear reactor graphite materials. In this work, oxidation rate and amounts of the isotropic graphite (IG-110, Toyo Carbon), currently being used for the Koran nuclear reactor, are investigated at various temperature. Oxidation process or principle of graphite was figured out by measuring the oxidation rate, and relation between oxidation rate and sample shape are understood. In the oxidation process, shape effect of volume, surface area, and surface to volume ratio are investigated at $600^{\circ}C$, based on the sample of ASTM C 1179-91.

  • In order to obtain the oxidation layer for SiC MOS, the oxide layers by thermal oxidation process with dry and wet method were deposited and characterized. Deposition temperature for oxidation layer was $1100^{\circ}C$~130$0^{\circ}C$ by $O_2$ and Ar atmosphere. The oxide thickness, surface morphology, and interface characteristic of deposited oxide layers were measurement by ellipsometer, SEM, TEM, AFM, and SIMS. Thickness of oxidation layer was confirmed 50nm and 90nm to with deposition temperature at $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1200{\circ}C$ for dry 4 hours and wet 1 hour, respectively. For the high purity oxidation layer, the necessity of sacrificial oxidation which is etched for the removal of the defeats on the wafer after quickly thermal oxidation was confirmed.

  • Alloy 617 is a Ni-base superalloy and a candidate material for the intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) of a very high temperature gas reactor (VHTR) which is one of the next generation nuclear reactors under development. The high operating temperature of VHTR enables various applications such as mass production of hydrogen with high energy efficiency. Alloy 617 has good creep resistance and phase stability at high temperatures in an air environment. However, it was reported that the mechanical properties decreased at a high temperature in an impure helium environment. In this study, high-temperature corrosion tests were carried out at $850^{\circ}C-950^{\circ}C$ in a helium environment containing the impurity gases $H_2$, CO, and $CH_4$, in order to examine the corrosion behavior of Alloy 617. Until 250 h, Alloy 617 specimens showed a parabolic oxidation behavior at all temperatures. The activation energy for oxidation in helium environment was 154 kJ/mol. The SEM and EDS results elucidated a Cr-rich surface oxide layer, Al-rich internal oxides and depletion of grain boundary carbides. The thickness and depths of degraded layers also showed a parabolic relationship with time. A normal grain growth was observed in the Cr-rich surface oxide layer. When corrosion tests were conducted in a pure helium environment, the oxidation was suppressed drastically. It was elucidated that minor impurity gases in the helium would have detrimental effects on the high-temperature corrosion behavior of Alloy 617 for the VHTR application.

  • Graphite is suitable for high temperature structural materials because of chemical stability as well as unique crystal structure. Especially, graphite can be used as a part of a nuclear reactor due to high tolerance at the extreme conditions of high temperature and neutron irradiations. Although study of oxidation properties or behaviors of graphite are very important and essential for the life and stability of the nuclear reactor, most of studies treat this theme lightly. This work focuses on the oxidation characteristics of several grade isotropic graphite of the nuclear reactor.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are low calorific value gases (LCVG) emitted from chemical processes such as painting booth, dye works and drying processes etc. Characteristics of VOCs are low calorific values less than 150 kcal/$m^3$, high activation energy for ignition and low energy output. These characteristics usually make combustion unstable and its treatment processes needs high-energy consumption, The cyclone combustion system is suitable for LCVG burning because it can recirculate energy through a high swirling flow to supply the activation energy for ignition, increases energy density to make a combustion temperature higher than usual swirl combustor and also increases mixing intensity, This research was conducted to develop optimized cyclone combustion system for thermal oxidation of VOCs. This research was executed to establish the effect of swirl number with respect to the combustion temperature and composition of exhausted gas in the specific combustor design.

  • Cr-Al alloys are attracting attention as oxidation resistant coating materials for high temperature metallic materials due to their excellent high temperature stability. However, the mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of Cr-Al alloys can be further enhanced, and such attempts are made in this study. To improve the properties of Cr-Al alloys, Si is added up to 5 wt%. Casting specimens with different amounts of Si content are prepared by a vacuum arc remelting method and isothermally heated under steam conditions at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The as-cast microstructure of low Si alloys is mainly composed of only a Cr phase, while $Al_8Cr_5$ and $Cr_3Si$ phases are also observed in the 5 % Si alloy. In the high Si alloy, only Cr and $Cr_3Si$ phases remain after the isothermal heating at $1,100^{\circ}C$. It is found that Si additions slightly decrease the oxidation resistance of the Cr-Al alloy. However, the microhardness of the Cr-Al alloy is observed to increase with an increasing Si content.

  • This study used optical and scanning electron microscopy to analyze the surface oxidation phenomenon that accompanies a γ'-precipitate free zone in a directional solidified CM247LC high temperature creep specimen. Surface oxidation occurs on nickel-based superalloy gas turbine blades due to high temperature during use. Among the superalloy components, Al and Cr are greatly affected by diffusion and movement, and Al is a major component of the surface oxidation products. This out-diffusion of Al was accompanied by γ' (Ni3Al) deficiency in the matrix, and formed a γ'-precipitate free zone at the boundary of the surface oxide layer. Among the components of CM247LC, Cr and Al related to surface oxidation consist of 8 % and 5.6 %, respectively. When Al, the main component of the γ' precipitation phase, diffused out to the surface, a high content of Cr was observed in these PFZs. This is because the PFZ is made of a high Cr γ phase. Surface oxidation of DS CM247LC was observed in high temperature creep specimens, and γ'-rafting occurred due to stress applied to the creep specimens. However, the stress states applied to the grip and gauge length of the creep specimen were different, and accordingly, different γ'-rafting patterns were observed. Such surface oxidation and PFZ and γ'-rafting are shown to affect CM247LC creep lifetime. Mapping the microstructure and composition of major components such as Al and Cr and their role in surface oxidation, revealed in this study, will be utilized in the development of alloys to improve creep life.
