  • In general, industrial rotating machinery have been designed to have critical speed that is above operating speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the first critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed and high performance of rotating machinery. Therefore, it is important to predict the accuracy rotordynamic characteristics of the high speed rotating system in advance. In this paper, the results of rotordynamic analysis about FWP(Feed Water Pump) drive turbine rotor are showed. Because the FWP drive turbine analyzed is high speed machinery operated more than the operation speed of conventional FWP drive turbine, Seismic response analysis as well as unbalance response analysis is done in order to improve the reliability of the new turbine rotor-bearing system.

  • For rotating machinery with high speed and high efficiency, large labor and high expenses are required to conduct machine health monitoring. Therefore, it becomes necessary to develop new diagnosis technique which can detect abnormalities of the rotating machinery effectively. In this paper, it is identified that bispectrum analysis technique can be successfully applied to dectect the abnormalities of the roating machinery through computer simulation, and results of the bispectrum analysis are patterned in griding form. Further, pattern recognition technique using back propagation algorithm, which is one of neural network algorithm, being consisted of patterned input layer and output layer for abnormal status, is applied to detect the abnormalities of simulator which is able to make up various kinds of abnorml conditions(misalignment, unbalance, rubbing etc.) of the rotating machinery.

  • High speed rotating machines can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance that is a major source of harmful vibration for many types of rotating machinery. So, the balancing procedure is needed for all high-speed rotating system. To save the time and cost of off-line balancing, many researchers have developed the on-line balancing devices and methods. In this paper, an active balancing device, which is an electro-magnetic type, is developed and the active balancing algorithm using influence coefficient method is also proposed. The active balancing experiment for flexible rotors during operation is performed by an active balancing device. As a result, controlled unbalance responses are below the vibration limit at all rotating speed ranges with critical speed.

  • In industry, various rotating machinery such as pumps, gas turbines, compressors, electric motors, generators are being used as an important facility. Due to the industrial development, they make high performance(high-speed, high-pressure). As a result, we need more intelligent and reliable machine condition diagnosis techniques. Diagnosis technique using hidden Markov-model is proposed for an accurate and predictable condition diagnosis of various rotating machines and also has overcame the speed limitation of time/frequency method by using compensation of the rotational speed of rotor. In addition, existing artificial intelligence method needs defect state data for fault detection. hidden Markov model can overcome this limitation by using normal state data alone to detect fault of rotational machinery. Vibration analysis of step-up gearbox for wind turbine was applied to the study to ensure the robustness of diagnostic performance about compensation of the rotational speed. To assure the performance of normal state alone method, hidden Markov model was applied to experimental torque measuring gearbox in this study.

  • The application of PIV to the studies of fluid-machines, especially focused on turbo-machinery is reviewed by scrutinizing the previous investigation. Owing to the inevitable high-speed analysis of turbo-machinery consisting of rotating impellers, the importance of optical setups to cope with illumination problem is frequently mentioned as main ingredient affecting the PIV performance. And the acquisition of the relative velocity and absolute velocity is determined mainly by the optical recording conditions. A few studies cast satisfactory extension of the PIV data to quantitative pressure estimation and related noise assessment.

  • A slot restrictor air journal bearing has high load capacity and high stiffness. The stability characteristics of the slot restrictor air journal bearing are studied theoretically and experimentally to forecast and to prevent the whirl instability. As for the high speed rotating machinery, the instability called'whirl'occurs when the rotor rotates at a speed more than twice the resonant speed. Once the whirl occurs, rubbing contact between the journal and the bearing occurs mostly and the bearing-rotor system is destroyed ultimately. Therefore, the forecasting and prevention of the occurrence of whirl instability is a very important subject especially to develop highly efficient high speed rotating machinery. The bearing with the slot restrictor that varies about circumferential direction is used for the purpose of the prevention of whirl instability.

  • This paper aims to present the design and performance evaluation of a counter-rotating tidal turbine using CFD and to compare its performance with single rotor. The device scale is 10kW and the rotating part consists of two rotors which rotate in opposite direction. Compared with conventional single rotor, the counter-rotating system shows higher power efficiency at high stream velocity but lower efficiency at low stream velocity. The added counter-rotated rotor together helps improve the energy absorption capacity but has influence on the upstream rotor that reduces its performance. In terms of power capture, the designed counter-rotating tidal turbine is more advantageous in high speed tidal condition.

  • Tilting pad journal bearings(TPJBs) are widely used for high speed rotating machinery owing to their rotordynamic stability and thermal management feature. With increase in the rotating speed of such machinery, an increasingly important aspect of TPJB design is the prediction of their thermal behaviors. Researchers have conducted detailed investigations in the last two decades, which provided design tools for the TPJBs. Based on these previous studies, this paper presents a thermohydrodynamic(THD) analysis model for TPJBs. To calculate pressure distribution, we solve the generalized Reynolds equation and to predict the lubricant temperature, we solve the 3D energy equation. We employ the oil mixing theory to calculate pad inlet temperature; further, to consider heat conduction via the pad, we solve the heat conduction equation for the pads. We assume the shaft temperature as the averaged oil film temperature and apply natural convection boundary conditions to the pad side and back surfaces. To validate the analysis model, we compare the predicted pad temperatures with those from previous research. The results show good agreement with previous research. In addition, we conduct parametric studies on a TPJB which was used in a gas turbine simulator system. The predicted results show that film temperature largely depends on the rotating speed and oil supply condition.

  • As a high specific speed pump, the contra-rotating axial flow pump with two rotors rotating reversely has been proved with higher hydraulic and cavitation performance, while in our previous researches, the potential interaction between two blade rows was distinctly observed for our prototype rotors designed with equal rotational speed for both front and rear rotors. Based on the theoretical and experimental evidences, a rotational speed optimization methodology was proposed and applied in the design of a new combination of contra-rotating rotors, primarily in expectation of the optimized blade pressure distributions as well as pertinently improved hydraulic performances including cavitation performance. In the present study, given one stationary and two rotating frames in the contra-rotating rotors case, a pressure measurement concept taking account of the revolutions of both front and rear rotors simultaneously was adopted. The casing wall pressure data sampled in time domain was successfully transferred into space domain, by which the ensemble averaged blade-to-blade pressure distributions at the blade tip of two contra-rotating rotors under different operation conditions were studied. It could be seen that the rotor pair with the optimized rotational speed combination as well as work division, shows more reasonable blade-to-blade pressure distribution and well weakened potential interaction. Moreover, combining the loading curves estimated by the measured casing wall pressure, the cavitation performance of the rotor pairs with new rotational speed combination were proved to be superior to those of the prototype pairs.

  • In general industrial rotating machinery is operated under 3,600 rpm as rotating speed and designed to have critical speed that is above operating speed. So, there was no problem to operate rotating machine under critical speed. But nowadays, they should be operated more than the frist critical speed as usual with the trend of high speed, large scale and hish precision in industries. In case of the large rotor assembly as the trend of large scale, using fitting method of disk or cylinder on shaft is rising for the convenience of assembly and cutting down of manufacturing cost. The shrink fitting is used to assemble lamination part on shaft for manufacturing of rotor of motor or generator in many cases and also is widely used for other machinery. In rotating system, which is compose of rotor and bearing, the critical speed is determined from inertia and stiffness for the rotor and bearings. In case of fitting assembly, analysis and design of the rotor is not easy because the rotor stiffness is determined depend on a lot of factors such as shaft material/dimension, disk material/dimension and assembled interference etc. Therefore designer who makes a plan for hish-speed rotating machine should design that the critical speed is located out of operating range, as dangerous factors exist in it. In order to appropriate design, an accurate estimation of stiffness and damping is very important. The stiffness variation depend on fitting interference is a factor that changes critical speed and if it's possible to estimate it, that Is very useful to design rotor-bearing system. In this paper, the natural frequency variation of the rotor depends on fitting interference between basic shaft and cylinder is examined by experimentation. From the result, their correlation is evaluated quantitatively using numerical analysis that is introduced equivalent diameter end the calculation criteria is presented for designer who design fitting assembly to apply with ease for determination of appropriate interference.
