The hydropurification reaction of CTA (crude terephthalic acid) was carried out with hydrogen over PdRu/CCM (carbon-carbonaceous composite material) catalyst in a batch reactor at high temperature. The first order kinetics of hydropurification is confirmed with the linear dependence of ln(4-CBA; 4-carboxybenzaldehyde) with reaction time. The reaction condition studied is thought to represent the hydropurification well because of the linear dependence of catalytic activity on the catalyst weight. The p-toluic acid (p-tol) in solid and liquid increases with the conversion of reaction or the decrease of 4-CBA. However, the benzoic acid (BA) concentration does not depend much on the conversion. The AT (alkali transmittance) does not depend on the 4-CBA when the concentration is higher than about 0.2% which shows the 4-CBA, in itself, does not cause the coloring effect. The AT of PTA depends inversely with the concentration of 4-CBA when the 4-CBA is less than about 0.15%. This may show the coloring materials are removed in parallel with the hydrogenation of 4-CBA. The (0.3%Pd-0.2%Ru)/CCM shows larger residual catalytic activity than a commercial catalyst, 0.5%Pd/C, after using in a commercial reactor even though the former has smaller fresh activity than the latter. The palladium and ruthenium in PdRu/CCM show the synergetic effect in activity when the ruthenium concentration is about $0.2{\sim}0.35$ wt%. It may be supposed that the PdRu/CCM catalyst can be a promising candidate to replace the commercial Pd/C catalyst.

This study deals with the irradiation effects on some selected components which are being used in an Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP). Irradiation test components have a higher priority from the aspect of their reliability because their degradation or failure is able to critically affect the performance of an ACP equipment. Components that we chose for the irradiation tests were the AC servo motor, potentiometer, thermocouples, accelerometer and CCD camera. ACP facility has a number of AC servo motors to move the joints of a manipulator and to operate process equipment. Potentiometers are used for a measurement of several joint angles in a manipulator. Thermocouples are used for a temperature measurement in an electrolytic reduction reactor, a vol-oxidation reactor and a molten salt transfer line. An accelerometer is installed in a slitting machine to forecast an incipient failure during a slitting process. A small CCD camera is used for an in-situ vision monitoring between ACP campaigns. We made use of a gamma-irradiation facility with cobalt-60 source for an irradiation test on the above components because gamma rays from among various radioactive rays are the most significant for electric, electronic and robotic components. Irradiation tests were carried out for enough long time for total doses to be over expected threshold values. Other components except the CCD camera showed a very high radiation hardening characteristic. Characteristic changes at different total doses were investigated and threshold values to warrant at least their performance without a deterioration were evaluated as a result of the irradiation tests.

Carbon was known to be one of effective additives which can improve the flux pinning of $MgB_2$ at high magnetic fields. In this study, glycerin $(C_3H_8O_3)$ was selected as a chemical carbon source for the improvement of critical current density of $MgB_2$. In order to replace some of boron atoms by carbon atoms, the boron powder was heat-treated with liquid glycerin. The glycerin-treated boron powder was mixed with an appropriate amount of magnesium powder to $MgB_2$ composition and the powder pallets were heat treated at $650^{\circ}C\;and\;900^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in a flowing argon gas. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature $(T_c)$ of $Mg(B_{1-x}C_x)_2$ prepared using glycerin-treated boron powder was 36.6 K, which is slightly smaller than $T_c$(37.1 K) of undoped $MgB_2$. The critical current density $(J_c)$ of $Mg(B_{1-x}C_x)_2$ was higher than that of undoped $MgB_2$ and the $T_c$ improvement effect was more remarkable at higher magnetic fields. The $T_c$, decrease and $J_c$ increase associated with the glycerin treatment for boron powder was explained in terms of the carbon substitution to boron site.

The wastewaters from textile and dyeing industries are difficult to treat due to its high pH, temperature, color intensity and non-biodegradable organic contents. This study investigated the removal of recalcitrant organics in a dyeing wastewater by using a packed bed reactor (PBR) that contained cell-immobilized pellets. The feed, obtained from an effluent of a biological treatment plant, had $SCOD_{Cr}$ of 330 mg/L and $SBOD_5$ of 20 mg/L on average. In immobilizing the cells to a Polyethylene Glycol(PEG) based medium, activated sludges from either a sewage treatment plant or an industrial wastewater treatment plant were used. When the empty bed contact time (EBCT) was above 8 hrs in the PBR, the $COD_{Cr}$ removal efficiency was over 50% and the $COD_{Mn}$ concentration was 72 mg/L or lower on average, which was substantially lower than the discharge standard of 90 mg/L. The results indicated that the optimum EBCT in the PBR was 8 hrs. The PBR with cell-immobilized pellets was effective as an advanced treatment process after an activated sludge process for treating dyeing wastewaters.
For continuous production of galactooligosaccharides(GOS), $\beta-galactosidase$ with h1gh transgalactosylation activity from Bacillus sp. A 4442 was Immobilized onto $Diaion^{TM}$ HPA 75(styrene-divinylbenzene resin). The parameters influencing enzyme immobilization were scrutinized in order to maximize immobilization yield while minimizing enzyme inactivation. The optimum conditions turned out to be: Tris buffer concentration 30 mM, pH 8.0, contact time at room temperature 3 hr, and enzyme loading 25 mg protein/g resin. Both the thermal stability and the operational stability of immobilized enzyme were markedly enchanced by the treatment with 0.5% glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. Under the experimental conditions established, the yield of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ immobilization was 40% or more and the activity of the immobilized enzyme ca. 200 U/g resin. When a packed-bed reactor was employed to continuously convert lactose to GOS, the specific production, which refers to as the amount of commercially valuable GOS produced by a unit amount of immobilized ${\beta}-galactosidase$, was found to be ca. 300 g GOS/g carrier.
We have carried out copper MOCVD(metalorganic chemical vapor deposition) onto the reactive sputtered PVD-TiN and rapid thermal converted RTP-TiN substrates using direct liquid injection for effective delivery of the (hfac)Cu(vtmos) [$C_{10}H_{13}O_{5}CuF_{6}$Si: 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4- pentadionato (vinyltrimethoxysilane) copper (I)] precursor. Especially, the influences of deposition conditions and the substrate type on growth rate, crystal structure, microstructure, and electrical resistivity of copper deposits have been discussed. It is found that the film growth with 0.2ccm precursor flow rate become mass-transfer controlled up to Ar flow rate of 200sccm and pick-up rate controlled at a vaporizer above 1.0Torr reactor pressure. The surface-reaction controlled region from 155 to 225$^{\circ}C$ at 0.6Torr reactor pressure results in the apparent activation energies of 12.7~14.1kcal/mol, and above 224$^{\circ}C$ the growth rate with $H_2$ addition could be improved compared to the pure Ar carrier. The Cu/RTP-TiN structures which have high copper nucleation density in initial stage of growth show more pronounced (111) preferred orientations and lower electrical resistivities than those on PVD-TiN. The variation of electrical resistivity with substrate temperature reflects the three types of film microstructure changes, showing the lowest value for the deposit at 165$^{\circ}C$ with small grains of good contacts.

In this study, bio-carbons were produced by activation process from unused biomass (Grade 3 wood pellet and spent coffee grounds) to determine the removal performance of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The activation experiments were conducted in a fixed bed reactor using CO2 as an activation agent. The temperature of the activation reactor and input of CO2 were 900 ℃ and 1 L min-1 for all the experiments. The maximum BET surface area of about 788 m2 g-1 was obtained for bio-carbon produced from Grade 1 wood pellet, whereas about 544 m2 g-1 was achieved with bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds. In all the experiments, the bio-carbons produced were mainly found to have micro-porous nature. A lower ash amount in raw material was favored for the high surface area of bio-carbons. In the removal test of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, the bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds showed excellent adsorption performance compared with woody biomass (Grade 1 wood pellet and Grade 3 wood pellet). In addition, the comparative experiment of commercial impregnated activated carbon and bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds was conducted. In terms of formaldehyde removal performance, the commercial impregnated bio-carbon was excellent, while bio-carbon produced from spent coffee grounds was excellent in acetaldehyde removal.
The Stockholm Convention, which was adopted in Sweden in 2001 to protect human health and the environment, includes regulations for Persistent Organic Pollutant Rotors such as toxic and bioaccumulatives. Currently, there are 28 types of materials. This prohibits and limits the production, use, and manufacture of products. Korea is a member of the Convention, and it is necessary to prepare management and treatment plans to address the POP trends. Thus, we experimentally investigate whether the environmentally stable incineration is achieved when the sample is thermally treated using the Lab-scale (1 kg/hr). The target samples is pesticides in liquid phase and solid phase. In this study, organic chlorinated pesticides and their thermal characteristics were analyzed. We calculated the theoretical air volume based on the element analysis results. Because the interior of the reactor is small, more than 10 times of the air ratio was injected. The retention time was set to at least 4 seconds using a margin. The incineration temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. Thus, we experimentally investigated whether the environmentally stable incineration was achieved when the sample was thermally treated using the Lab-scale (1 kg/hr). We analyzed five types of exhaust gas; the 02 concentration was high, but the CO amount decreased. Complete combustion is difficult because of the small size of the furnace due to the nature of Lab-scale. The organic chlorine-containing pesticide had an average decomposition rate of 99.9935%. Considering the decomposition rates of organic chlorine-containing pesticide in this study, the incineration treatment at over 2 ton/hour, which is typical for a conventional incinerator, is possible. Considering the occurrence of dioxins and unintentional persistent organic pollutants, it can operate at more than $1,100^{\circ}C$.

A continuous low temperature ($510^{\circ}C{\sim}530^{\circ}C$) pyrolysis experiment in a pilot-scale of 85.3 kg/hr was carried out by the mixed feedstock of half dried digested sewage sludge and waste plastics. As a result, the amount of pyrolysis gas generated was maximum 68.3% of input dry mass and scored $40.9MJ/Nm^3$ of lower heating value (LHV), and the percentage of air inflow caused by continuous pyrolysis was 19.6%. The oil was produced 4.2% of the input dry mass, and the LHV was 32.5 MJ/kg. The sulfur and chlorine contents, which could cause corrosion of the facility, were found to be 0.2% or more respectively. The carbide generated was 27.5% of the input dry mass which shows LHV of 10.2 MJ/kg, and did not fall under designated waste from the elution test. The concentration of carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides and hydrogen cyanide of emitted flu gas from pyrolysis gas combustion was especially high, and dioxin (PCDDs/DFs) was within the legal standards as $0.034ng-TEQ/Sm^3$. Among the 47 water pollutant contents of waste water generated from dry flue gas condensation, several contents such as total nitrogen, n-H extract and cyanide showed high concentration. Therefore, the merge treatment in the sewage treatment plants after pre-treatment could be considered.

Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X are the most promising candidate materials for the heat exchanger of next generation nuclear reactor. Surface coating and its effects on high temperature properties for the Inconel 617 and Hastelloy X under molten FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF) salt environment have been investigated. For TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coatings, the two different PVD (physical vapor deposition) methods of an arc discharge and a sputtering were applied, respectively. A study for the thermal stability of the surface modified Ni-Cr alloy substrates has been conducted. To evaluate the corrosion mechanism of Ni-Cr alloys in the molten salt, a ruptured Inconel pipe used for the molten salt transportation has been analyzed. The thermal properties of morphological and structural properties each sample were characterized before and after heat-treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ in molten FLiNaK salt. The results showed that the TiAlN and $Al_2O_3$ overlay coated specimens had the enhanced high temperature stability.
