Effects of Carbon and Sulfur Content on Mechanical Properties of High Purity Steel (고순도강의 기계적 성질에 미치는 탄소 및 황 함량의 영향)

  • To lower the annealing temperature and the deviation of the mechanical properties of bake hardening steels, high purity steels were investigated. The steels were characterized by treating at low recrystallization temperature. It was confirmed that the strengthening originated from the solid solution of carbon and the ferrite grain refinement by fine MnS precipitates as carbon and sulfur contents increased in high purity steels. However, it was observed that there was no more increase of strength in steels containing over 40 ppm of carbon. It was considered that the excess carbon formed either the carbon cluster or the low temperature unstable carbides which had the negligible effect on the strengthening because they were reported to be highly coherent with the matrix. The carbon cluster and unstable carbides could be transformed to the stable cementite during bake hardening treatment. MnS was not observed in the high purity steel containing 5 ppm S, resulting in very coarse recrystallized grains and good ductility. As sulfur content increased, the recrystallized grain size decreased due to the formation of the fine MnS precipitates.

  • Advanced melting technology is now being employed in the manufacture of stainless steel powders. The new process currently includes electric arc furnace (EAF) technology in concert with Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD), High Performance Atomizing (HPA) and hydrogen annealing. The new high performance-processing route has allowed the more consistent production of existing products, and has allowed enhanced properties, such as improved green strength and green density. This paper will review these processing changes along with the potential new products that are being developed utilizing this technology. These include high strength stainless steels such as duplex and dual phase as well as stainless steel powders used in high temperature applications such as diesel filters and fuel cells.

Study of Material Properties of High Strength Microalloyed Steel for Cold Forming by Controlled Rolling and Cooling Technology (제어압연.제어냉각기술로 제조된 냉간성형용 비조질강의 소재특성)

  • The main purpose of the present study has been placed on investigating the mechanical properties and microstructures of C-Si-Mn-V steels for cold forming manufactured by controlled rolling and cooling technology. The steels were manufactured in electric arc furnace (EAF) and casted to $160{\times}160mm$ billet. The billets were reheated in walking beam furnace and rolled to coil, the stocks were rolled by Controlled Rolling and Cooling Technology (CRCT), so rolled at low temperature by water spraying applied in rolling stage and acceleratly cooled before coiling. Rolled coils were cold drawed to the degree of 16%, 27% of area reduction respectively without heat treatment. Microstructual observation, tensile test, compression test and charpy impact tests were conducted. The mechanical properties of the steels were changed by area reduction of cold drawing and it is founded that there are optimum level of cold drawing to minimize compression stress for these steels. From the result of this study, it is conformed that $80kg_{f}/mm^{2},\;90kg_{f}/mm^{2}$ grade high strength microalloyed steel for cold forming are developed by accelerated cooling and optimum cold drawing.

  • Recently, high performance steels have been utilized to structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. In this paper, flexure-compression members with the high-strength steel were experimentally evaluated to satisfy the design criteria when stub columns fabricated with HSA800 steel were eccentrically loaded. This test was conducted on box-shaped and H-shaped steels stub columns with high-strength steel to verify the P-M interaction of members subjected to combined forces according to axial load ratios. The results showed that all specimens were satisfied the requirements of Korean Building Code(KBC2009) for using of structural members.

  • Performance has been developed in terms of structural strength. Especially, in a structural steels, it is regarded as a common design process that an yield stress of thicker plate than 40mm uses that of below 40mm in thickness. This can be done using TMCP(Thermo mechanical control process). In this study, the structural stabilities such as deflection, maximum load carrying capacity would be calculated in high temperatures.

  • For manufacturing modern cars, so-called multi-materials, such as aluminum alloy with high-strength steels, are used. For obtaining such materials, a new joining method is required to achieve the multi-material design. Mechanical clinching is one of joining methods used to join the dissimilar materials. The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of mechanical clinching of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steels (SPFC440, 590, 780). Using FE-analysis and clinching experiment, the joinability of Al5052 alloy to high-strength steel is evaluated by geometrical shape of mechanical clinched joint, such as neck-thickness and undercut. Further, the joint strength is evaluated by performing a single-lap shear test. The upper high-strength steel SPFC780 was not clinched because of the necking of the upper sheet. The joint strength increased with increasing strength of the upper sheet. For the lower high-strength steel sheet, the joinability and joint strength decreased with increasing strength of the lower sheet.

Effect of Rolling Conditions on the Sticking Phenomena of Ferritic Stainless Steel (페라이트계 스테인레스강의 Sticking 현상에 미치는 열간압연조건의 영향)

  • Sticking behavior under the hot rolling conditions for ferritic stainless steels have been studied. Sticking, which is a phenomenon that the naked metal exposed to the surface by scale breakaway during hot rolling sticks to the roll surface, was affected by both high temperature tensile strength and oxidation resistance of the steels. A steel having higher tensile strength and lower oxidation resistance exhibits better resistance to the sticking. It is due to that higher tensile strength increases localized deformation resistance and lower oxidation resistance creates lower friction between steel and roll by forming thicker scale as a lubricant during hot rolling. So, the sticking tends to occur more severely in the order of 430J1L, 436L, 430 and 409L. The most sensitive temperature to the sticking was found to be 90$0^{\circ}C$ for all grade of steels. It was also found that the high speed steel(HSS) roll compared to the Hi-Cr roll was more beneficial to prevent sticking. Because higher surface hardness of HSS roll compared to that of Hi-Cr roll provides less nucleation sites for sticking such as scratch on the roll surface.

Effect of Microstructure on Hydrogen Induced Cracking Resistance of High Strength Low Alloy Steels

  • Hydrogen induced cracking (HIC) was studied phenomenologically and the effect of microstructure on HIC was discussed for the steels having two different levels of nonmetallic inclusions. Steels having different microstructures were produced by thermomechanically controlled processes (TMCP) from two different heats which had the different level of nonmetallic inclusions. Ferrite/pearlite (F/P), ferrite/acicular ferrite (F/AF), ferrite/bainite (F/B) were three representative microstructures for all tested steels. For the steels with higher level of inclusions, permissible inclusion level for HIC not to develop was different according to steelmicrostructure. On the contrary, HIC occurred also at the martensite/austenite (M/A) constituents regardless of steel microstructure when they accumulated to a certain degree. It was proved that M/A constituents were easily embrittled by hydrogen atoms. Steels having F/AF is resistant to HIC at a given actual service condition since they covers a wide range of diffusible hydrogen content without developing HIC.

Flexural Testing of Asymmetric Hybrid Composite Beams Fabricated from High-strength Steels (고강도강재를 적용한 비대칭 하이브리드 합성보의 휨거동 실험)

  • Full-scale flexural testing of asymmetric H-shape hybrid composite beams was conducted in this study. In fabricating hybrid H-shape sections, high strength steels were utilized for the bottom flange while ordinary strength steels were used for the top flange and web. With adding a fully composite floor slab, a total of 8 hybrid composite beam specimens were tested. The primary objective was to develop the asymmetric hybrid H-shape composite beams with maximized flexural efficiency and investigate their flexural behavior. Not all the hybrid composite specimens tested in this study exhibited the plastic moment and reasonable deformability. In the specimens with high-strength bottom flange, the longitudinal shear crack of the slab along the beam axis often preceded the development of beam plastic moment, although the slab was designed as fully composite. The mechanical reason for this unexpected behavior is discussed. It is emphasized that the longitudinal shear strength of composite slab should be checked in designing hybrid composite beams utilizing high strength steels like in this study.

Effect of Surface Condition on Tensile Properties of Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) High-Manganese Steels Hydrogen-Charged Under High Temperature and Pressure (고온-고압 수소 주입된 Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) 고망간강의 인장 거동에 미치는 표면 조건의 영향)

  • In this study, two Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels with different surface conditions were hydrogen-charged under high temperature and pressure; then, tensile testing was performed at room temperature in air. The yield strength of the 30Mn-0.2C specimen increased with decreasing surface roughness(achieved via polishing), but that of the 30Mn-0.2C-1.5Al specimen was hardly affected by the surface conditions. On the other hand, the tendency of hydrogen embrittlement of the two high-manganese steels was not sensitive to hydrogen charging or surface conditions from the standpoints of elongation and fracture behavior. Based on the EBSD analysis results, the small decrease in elongation of the charged specimens for the Fe-30Mn-0.2C-(1.5Al) high-manganese steels was attributed to the enhanced dislocation pile-up around grain boundaries, caused by hydrogen.
