  • Model tests for a stern flap have been performed to decrease the resistance of a large warship and to optimize the flap. Stern flaps and wedges of fast crafts are studied to apply to a large vessel in terms of speed-length ratio. The model tests of the flap has been carried out to find the effects of the design parameters, i.e. length and angie on resistance decrease. This work concludes that the optimized stern flap reduced resistance not only at the high speed by 9% but also at the cruising speed.

  • Two stroke low speed diesel engines are used as a power supplier not only for marine vessel but also diesel power plant with a benefit of its higher mobility and durability than the other thermal engines. However, there are some disadvantages such as the bigger vibrating excitation forces generated by high combustion pressure in cylinders which various kinds of vibrations are caused. In this paper, it is theoretically studied to control engine body vibration using dynamic vibration absorber. As an actual case, dynamic absorbers are designed for controlling X-mode vibration of 9K80MC-S engine on the diesel power plant and its performance is identified by the vibration test both in shop and site

  • A study was conducted to know 99.5% ethyl alcohol penetration depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Castanea crenata. Alcohol penetration depth was found higher in longitudinal direction by about 12.47 times. In both earlywood and latewood, fiber conducted alcohol in higher depth than that of large and small vessel. Penetration depth of alcohol after 15.0 second of penetration in longitudinal direction, there was no significant difference among fiber in sapwood and heartwood, and vessel in sapwood. At the beginning of penetration the speed was high and then gradually decreased.

  • A sensor was designed to detect backmixing of vessel fluid into the feedpipe. The sensor was composed of electrodes and a designed electric circuit. The electrodes were installed inside the feedpipe and tap water was flowed into the feedpipe. When NaC1 solution in the vessel penetrate into the feedpipe due to high agitator speed, the conductivity change is sensed by the electrodes and the resultant output signal is recorded by a pen-chart recorder. The electric circuit was designed to show maximum sensitivity. The resolution of this designed sensor was on the order of 10-s mole/l.

  • Resistance performance of small size fishing vessel is experimentally investigated to find out the effect of fore-body shape and trim for the better hull from development. The tests are performed for five different cases in the high speed circulating water channel(CWC). Wave patterns are observed to investigate the relation between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics.

  • We propose a multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor network for vessel monitoring to measure the variation of strain and temperature by environmental perturbation based on code division multiple access (CDMA). The center wavelength of FBG was linearly changed by environmental perturbation such as strain and temperature variation so that we could be monitoring the state of sensors. A RSOA was used as optical broadband source and which was modulated by using pseudo random binary sequence (PRBS) signal. The correlation peak of reflected signal from sensor networks was measured. In this paper, we used the sliding correlation techniques for high speed response and dynamic rage of sensors.

  • To decrease Europe's harmful emissions, the European Union aims to substantially increase its offshore wind energy capacity. To further develop offshore wind energy, investment in ever-larger construction vessels is necessary. However, this market is characterised by seemingly unpredictable growth of market demand, turbine capacity and distance from shore. Currently it is difficult to deal with such market uncertainty within the ship design process. This research aims to develop a method that is able to deal with market uncertainty in early ship design by increasing knowledge when design freedom is still high. The method uses uncertainty modelling prior to the requirement definition stage by performing global research into the market, and during the concept design stage by iteratively co-evolving the vessel design and business case in parallel. The method consists of three parts; simulating an expected market from data, modelling multiple vessel designs, and an uncertainty model that evaluates the performance of the vessels in the market. The case study into offshore wind foundation installation vessels showed that the method can provide valuable insight into the effect of ship parameters like main dimensions, crane size and ship speed on the performance in an uncertain market. These results were used to create a value robust design, which is capable of handling uncertainty without changes to the vessel. The developed method thus provides a way to deal with market uncertainty in the early ship design process.

  • In this study, for integrated management and inter-exchange of operational data generated by ships and land-side information on safe and business, a vessel communication system with modular functions was designed that applied high efficiency compression, least-cost algorithms and Inmarsat FBB connection automation system. Performance test at the KTsat Kumsan satellite earth station; system was found to delivered an average transfer speed of 7 kB/S, which was significant improvement from the existing commercial product's average speed of 5 kB/S. It also delivered twice the efficiency of the existing product in terms of compression rate and transfer of the most widely used office files in maritime businesses.
