  • This work conducts a validation study for the XH-59A helicopter using a rigid coaxial rotor system in order to establish the techniques of the conceptual design and performance analysis for the lift-offset compound rotorcraft. As a tool for conceptual design and performance analysis, NDARC (NASA Design and Analysis of Rotorcraft) is used for the present study. An assumed mission profile is considered for the conceptual design of the XH-59A. As a validation result of the design, the dimensions and weight of the XH-59A are appropriately designed when compared to the target values since the relative error is less than 0.5%. Then, performance analyses are conducted for the designed XH-59A model with and without auxiliary propulsion in hover and forward flight conditions. The present analyses show good validity since the prediction results compare well with both the flight test and previous analyses. Therefore, the techniques for the conceptual design and performance analysis of the lift-offset compound helicopter are overall considered to be appropriately established. In addition, this study investigates the influence of the lift-offset on the rotor effective lift-to-drag ratio of the XH-59A helicopter with auxiliary propulsion. As a result, the improvement of the rotor effective lift-to-drag ratio can be obtained by appropriately increasing the lift-offset in high-speed flight.

  • Dynamic responses of the bridge for a straddle-type monorail subjected to the ground motion of high probability to occur are investigated by means of a three-dimensional traffic-induced vibration analysis to clarify the effect of a train's dynamic system on seismic responses of a monorail bridge. A 15DOFs model is assumed for a car in the monorail train. The validity of developed equations of motion for a monorail train-bridge interaction system is verified by comparison with the field-test data. The inertia effect due to a ground motion is combined with the monorail train-bridge interaction system to investigate the seismic response of the monorail bridge under a moving train. An interesting result is that the dynamic system of the train on monorail bridges can act as a damper during earthquakes. The observation of numerical results also points out that the damper effect due to the dynamic system of the monorail train tends to decrease with increasing speed of the train.

  • This paper proposes a low-latency Sample Adaptive Offset filter (SAO) architecture and its Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) optimization scheme to achieve fast High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) decoding in a multi-core environment. According to the HEVC standard and its Test Model (HM), SAO operation is performed only at the picture level. Most realtime decoders, however, execute their sub-modules on a Coding Tree Unit (CTU) basis to reduce the latency and memory bandwidth. The proposed low-latency SAO architecture has the following advantages over picture-based SAO: 1) significantly less memory requirements, and 2) low-latency property enabling efficient pipelined multi-core decoding. In addition, SIMD optimization of SAO filtering can reduce the SAO filtering time significantly. The simulation results showed that the proposed low-latency SAO architecture with significantly less memory usage, produces a similar decoding time as a picture-based SAO in single-core decoding. Furthermore, the SIMD optimization scheme reduces the SAO filtering time by approximately 509% and increases the total decoding speed by approximately 7% compared to the existing look-up table approach of HM.

  • Resistance performance of small size fishing vessel is experimentally investigated to find out the effect of fore-body shape and trim for the better hull from development. The tests are performed for five different cases in the high speed circulating water channel(CWC). Wave patterns are observed to investigate the relation between the resistance performance and the wave characteristics.

  • Diffuse wireless optical communication offers more robust optical links in terms of coverage and shadowing than line-of-sight links. However, traditional diffuse wireless infrared (IR) transceiver systems are more susceptible to multi-path distortion and great power decrease, which results in limiting high-speed performance. Multi-beam is an effective technique to compensate for multi-path distortion in a wireless infrared environment. The goal of this paper is to analyze the transmission characteristics by replacing traditional diffuse system (TDS) which contains single wide angle transmitter and single element receiver by system consisting of three-beam transmitter and non-imaging receiver (TNS) attached with compound parabolic concentrator (CPC). In the simulation, we use the recursive model developed by Barry and Kahn and build the scenario based on 10 different cases which have been listed in Table 1. Moreover, we also check the reliability of the TNS diffuse link channel by BER test on the basis of different receiver positions and room sizes. The simulation results not only show the basic transmission characteristics of TNS diffuse link, but also are references to design more efficient and reliable indoor infrared transmission systems.

  • As the high-speed data communications such as xDSL using the existing copper cable come into wide use, the electromagnetic coupling characteristics of telecommunication cables become more significant. In order to describe the screening performance of telecommunication cable, the transfer impedance of cable shield is required. This paper describes the transfer impedance for two types of telecommunication cables using the line injection method of IEC 96-1. Results are analyzed to show how the materials of cable shields, the positioning of the injection line and of the inner conductor of the CUT(Cable Under Test) affect the value of transfer impedance. We then propose the transfer impedance model of telecommunication cable based on the measurements.

  • Generally, the forming process of sheet metal is very complex and difficult process because of many variables such as tool geometry, material properties and lubrication. In this view point, the numerical analysis of sheet metal forming process is very difficult. High speed computer is used to model complex sheet metal forming process on a reasonable time scale. The design and development of sheet metal parts in the automotive industry and the need for improved sheet forming process and reduced part development cost have led to the use of computer simulation in tool/die design of sheet metal pressing. HMC(Hyundai Mator Company) has invested to develop programs for analysis of sheet metal forming process with connection of Universities. As a result, several programs were developed. Recently, the commercial software, PAM-STAMP of ESI was installed and is being tried to application of it to the real automotive panels. This article reviews the ongoing activities on development and application of analytical modeling of sheet metal forming at HMC.

  • Market integration and prices in pulse crops like black gram play an important role in determining the production decisions of the farmers and diversification towards high value nutritious crops. In this context, the present study explores extent of market integration and price transmission in selected major black gram markets in Andhra Pradesh using Johansen co-integration, Vector Error Correction Model and Granger causality test. The study used monthly prices data of black gram (Rs/quintal) sourced from selected markets of Srikakulam, Krishna and Kurnool spanning January, 1990 to December, 2019. The results of the study strongly buttressed the existence of co-integration and interdependence of selected black gram markets in Andhra Pradesh. However, the speed of adjustment of the prices found to be moderate in Krishna market and quite weaker in Srikakulam market and thereby prices correct a small percentage of the disequilibrium in these markets with the greatest percentage by the external and internal forces. So, it necessitates the need for future research, to investigate the influence of external and internal factors such as market infrastructure, Government policy and self-sufficient production, product characteristics and utilization towards market integration. As there exists only unidirectional causality from Krishna to Kurnool and from Krishna to Srikakulam markets, it calls for strengthening the information technology for flow of market information regularly to help the farmers for increasing their income.
