The effect of welding speed on the weldability, microstructures, hardness, tensile property of Nd:YAG laser welding joint in 600MPa grade precipitation hardening high strength steel was investigated. A shielding gas was not used, and bead-on-plate welding was performed using various welding speeds at a power of 3.5kW. Porosity in the joints occurred at 1.8m/min, but were not observed over the welding speed of 2.1m/min. However, spatter occurred over the welding speed of 6.6m/min. The hardness was the highest at heat affected zone(HAZ) near fusion zone(FZ), and was decreased on approaching to the base metal. The maximum hardness increased with increasing welding speed. The microstructure of FZ was composed of coarse grain boundary ferrite and bainite(upper) but the HAZ near the FZ contained bainite(Lower) and fine ferrite at a low welding speed. With increasing welding speed, ferrite at the FZ and the HAZ became finely and upper binite changed to lower bainite. In a perpendicular tensile test to the weld line, all specimens were fractured at the base metal, and the tensile strength and the yield strength of joints was equal to those of raw material. Elongation was found to be lower than that of the raw material.

High frequency induction welding is widely employed for longitudinal seam welding of small scale tubes and pipes because of its relatively high processing speed and efficiency. This research is aimed at understanding the variables that affect the quality of the high frequency induction welding. The welding variables include the welding frequency, weld speed, V-angle and tube thickness. Temperature distribution of the tube is calculated through three dimensional coupled electromagnetic and thermal FE analysis. The skin and proximity effects are considered in the electromagnetic analysis. The influence of the impeder is also analyzed. The effects of the operating welding variables on the temperature distribution are investigated quantitatively by exhibiting the heat affected zone (HAZ). The results explain the mechanism of significant enhancement of welding efficiency when the impeder is used. The proper welding conditions without the overheated edge are obtained through FE analysis.

Current waveform control of pulse MAG welding power source is studied so that welding of thin plates may obtain high speed and improved performance. In this paper, waveform control method is proposed, digital controller using DSP is able to control the current waveform precisely. High speed welding of thin plates using pulse MAG welding method is made possible. Performance test for 1.2mm thin plates is carried out, output waveform and welding performance is analyzed.
High speed rotating arc process, forming a flat bead surface with shallow penetration depth, can be applied to the automatic seam tracking, because the amplitude of current waveform increases at high rotation speed. Two high speed arc rotation mechanisms have been developed in Japan and Germany b rotating the electrode nozzle using an external motor, which are used prevalently for narrow gap and conventional seam welding. In this study, a new rotation mechanism was developed by using a hallow shaft motor designed to be installed in the electrode nozzle. By rotating the welding arc, the amplitude of current waveform increases remarkably since the self-regulation of arc is not fully performed. Experiments show that the arc sensor with high-speed rotation arc has improved its responsiveness and sensitivity.
The joining of Ti and SUS304 dissimilar metals is one of the effective measures to save rare metal. But Ti and SUS304 have differences in materials properties, and Ti and Fe intermetallic compounds such as TiFe and $TiFe_2$ are easily formed in weld fusion zone between Ti and SUS304. Nevertheless, in this study, full penetration lap dissimilar welding of Ti and SUS304 using single-mode fiber laser with ultra-high welding speed was tried, and it was found out that ultra-high welding speed could control the generation of intermetallic compound. To recognize the formation of intermetallic phase in the weld fusion zone and the compound zone of interface weld area were observed and analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). And it was confirmed that the ultra-high welding speed could reduce amount of intermetallic compounds, but the intermetallic compounds were existed in the weld fusion zone under the all conditions.

Welding process of ultra thin stainless steel foil was investigated using a single mode Yb-fiber laser with a CW maximum output power 40W. In micro welding, critical power density for keyhole welding was 1 to 2 orders larger higher than in macro-welding due to larger thermal conduction, extremely high speed welding becomes possible.
Robotized MIG welding of large aluminium components for high speed trains is state-of-the-art. The implementation of online laser cameras enables seam tracking and adoptive modification of welding parameters. A constant fill is achieved regardless of the gap tolerances. Friction Stir Welding has been introduced to the market as a reliable and fast joining technology. The advantages of high welding speeds and the elimination of arc light, fumes and liquefaction in the welding spot lead to economical realisation of heavy-duty gantry systems. FSW robots offer a high flexibility with regard to welding of curved parts, and can be equipped with laser cameras for exact joint tracking.
In this study, welding phenomena involved in formation of penetrators during high frequency electric resistance welding were investigated. High speed cinematography of the process revealer that a molten bridge between neighboring skelp edges forms at apex point and travels along narrow gap toward to welding point at a speed ranging from 100 to 400 m/min. The bridge while moving along the narrow gap swept away oxide containing molten metal from the gap, providing oxide-free surface for a forge-welding at upsetting stand frequency of the budge formation, travel distance and speed of the bridge were affected by the heat input rate into strip. The travel distance and its standard deviation were found to have a strong relationship with the weld defect density. Based on the observation, a new mechanism of the penetrator formation during HF ERW process is proposed.
Al6082-T6 is widely used because of its corrosion resistance and excellent strength. HAZ softening occurs in MIG welding process for this aluminium alloys because this aluminium alloy is heated to higher temperature than its aging temperature during welding. Therefore, low heat input and minimum standard deviation of heat input are required for narrow HAZ width and, for higher strength of welds. In this study, Al6082-T6 was used to examine for HAZ softening with various heat input in aluminium MIG welding. For weldments, micro hardness was measured and tensile test was carried out. Minimum hardness was increased at high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min in welding speed comparing with 40cm/min. Also, in case of high speed welding such as 80cm/min and 120cm/min, tensile strength of weldments was increased about 10% comparing with low speed welding(40cm/min).
Advancements in silicon phase control (SCR) technologies provide an arc welding power supply that has the capability to allow the alteration of the Alternating Current (AC) welding output. These technologies provide a square wave output involving sixteen frequency selections and multiple balance selections. While an AC out put is known to minimize magnetic disturbances associate with Direct Current (DC), the potentials of a non-sinusoidal waveform have not been explored. The focus of the paper is to determine the effects that the frequency and balance of an AC wave form output will have upon a high speed Submerge Arc (SAW) application. The test matrix of the project includes welding .250" steel plate. Joint type is square groove with a travel speed of 65 IPM. Each of the weld parameters was held constant, only the frequency and/or balance were altered between welds. Each frequency/balance combination involved three-gap spacing. Upon completion of the welds the bead profiles were measured and recorded. A relationships/trends were observed with various frequency and balance values. Optimum frequency and balance values were found for the .250" square groove application which permit consistent weld sizing, ease of slag removal, and minimal plate distortion.
