  • Diagnostics of plasma density is a key factor for monitoring plasma processing. Various probes are invented to measure plasma density and cut-off probe is a one of the most promising diagnostics tool for measuring plasma density. However, at the low density or high pressure the cut-off probe cannot clearly resolve the cut-off peak. Several reasons make this problem: Cut-off likes peaks caused by cavity resonances and weaken transmission spectrum signal at high pressure. Recently, You et al., have researched mechanism of cut-off probe and we improve the cut-off reliability and sensitivity base on that research. Modified cut-off antenna is adapted and bias cut-off probe method is tried. These experiment results have good agreement with the previous study and show good measurement characteristics.

  • We demonstrate that reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coated thin aluminum film is an effective optoacoustic transmitter for generating high pressure and high frequency ultrasound previously unattainable by other techniques. The rGO layer of different thickness is deposited between a 100 nm-thick aluminum film and a glass substrate. Under a pulsed laser excitation, the transmitter generates enhanced optoacoustic pressure of 64 times the aluminum-alone transmitter. A promising optoacoustic wave generation is possible by optimizing thermoelasticity of metal film and thermal conductivity of rGO in the proposed transmitter for laser-induced ultrasound (LIUS) applications.

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare stable water-in-corn oil (W/O) emulsion droplets coated by polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR). W/O emulsions (20 wt% aqueous phase, 80 wt% oil phase containing 8 wt% PGPR) were produced by high pressure homogenization (Emulsions 1), however, appreciable amount of relatively large water droplets (d>$10{\mu}m$) were found. To facilitate droplet disruption, viscosity of each phase was adjusted: (i) increased the viscosity of aqueous phase by adding 0.1 wt% xanthan (Emulsions 2); (ii) decreased the viscosity of oil phase and aqueous phase by heating them separately at $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr immediately before emulsification (Emulsions 3). Homogenizing at the elevated temperature clearly led to a smaller water droplet size, whereas xanthan neither improved nor adversely affected on the microstructures of the emulsions. In addition, the Emulsions 3 had good stability to droplet aggregation under shearing stress, thermal processing, and long term storage.

  • Center pillar, which is installed in the center of flank of car body, supports roof and door and ensures the safety of driver by reducing the damage of car body caused by impact. Recently, high-strength steel is widely used to manufacture the center pillar due to high stiffness and fuel efficiency. In this study, material properties of the high-strength steel, whose tensile strength is more than 780MPa, were obtained to produce the center pillar. Stamping was performed by considering the design parameters (blank holder force, press stroke, blank size and pad pressure) used in the actual filed. The drawbeads were included in the stamping process to reduce the amounts of wrinkling and spring back. Using the commercial software, Autoform R5.2 and Minitab, effects of design parameters of the stamping process upon spring back were analyzed and applied to the design process. The restriking process meets the target of under 0.5mm in the amount of spring back.

  • Nano-sized $TiB_2$ was in situ synthesized in copper matrix through self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) with high-energy ball milled Ti-B-Cu elemental mixtures as powder precursors. The size of $TiB_2$ particles in the product of SHS reaction decreases with time of preliminary mechanical treatment ranging from 1 in untreated mixture to 0.1 in mixtures milled for 3 min. Subsequent mechanical treatment of the product of SHS reaction allowed the $TiB_2$ particles to be reduced down to 30-50 nm. Microstructural change of $TiB_2$-Cu nanocomposite during spark plasma sintering (SPS) was also investigated. Under simultaneous action of pressure, temperature and electric current, titanium diboride nanoparticles distributed in copper matrix move, agglomerate and form a interpenetrating phase composite with a fine-grained skeleton.

  • Cu-Zn alloy nano powders were fabricated by the electrical explosion of Zn-electroplated Cu wire along with commercial brass wire. The powders exploded from brass wire were composed mainly of ${\alpha},{\beta},\;and\;{\gamma}$ phases while those from electroplated wires contained additional Zn-rich phases as ${\varepsilon}$, and Zn. In case of Zn-elec-troplated Cu wire, the mixing time of the two components during explosion might not be long enough to solidify as the phases of lower Zn content. This along with the high vapor pressure of Zn appears to be the reason for the observed shift of explosion products towards the high-Zn phases in electroplated wire system.

  • The formation of the graphite spherulites has been studied experimentally in the Ni-C liquid under high pressure and temperature. In the diamond-stable region the graphite spherulites were formed and grew stably. They were not the polycrystalline particles but the single crystals of the fullerene-type, respectively, grown spirally with much imperfection. And they were proved to be in a mixture state of carbon atoms with $sp^2$- and $sp^3$-bonding by an Auger electron spectroscope and a high resolution transmission electron microscope. As the pressure decreased from the diamond-stable region to the graphite-stable region, the shape of the graphite particles changed gradually from the sphere to the flaky shape. The formation of the graphite spherulites was attributed to the stable existence of the carbon atoms with $sp^3$ bonding in the diamond-stable region. The formation of the large fullerene-type graphite spherulites with much imperfection is well agreed with Kroto's prediction for growth of the giant fullerene.

  • The objective of study on composite cylinder for alternative fuel vehicle is to develop safe, efficient, and commercially viable, on-board fuel storage system for the fuel cell vehicle or natural gas vehicle that use highly compressed gaseous fuel such as hydrogen or natural gas. This study presents the whole procedure of development and certification of a type 3 composite cylinder of 207bar service pressure and 70 liter water capacity, which includes design/analysis, processing of filament winding, and validation through various testing and evaluation. Design methods of liner configuration and winding patterns are presented. Three dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis techniques are used to predict burst pressure and failure mode. Design and analysis techniques are verified through burst and cycling tests. The full qualification test methods and results for validation and certification are presented.

  • Sandwich sheet with inner structure is expected to find many applications because of high stiffness to mass ratio. However, low resistance to the compressive pressure in the thickness direction is a dominating factor in the formability of sandwich sheet. In this study, sandwich sheet with pyramid type core is considered. For the compressive characteristics in the thickness direction, experiments and finite element simulations are carried out. In the experiment, deformation behavior is observed and discussed as the compression proceeds. It is shown that a corresponding finite element simulation can give a reasonable agreement with experiment in terms of maximum pressure. However, simulation shows some discrepancy from the experiment in terms of compressive pressure-displacement characteristics. The reasons for this discrepancy are studied in the geometrical imperfectness of sandwich sheet. It is also observed that most of deformation is dominated by buckling mode of pyramid legs.

  • As a first phase of plasma study intended for semiconductor processing research, we have studied the discharge phenomena. In particular, we have obtained a specific formula for the breakdown voltage as a function of the neutral state pressure of reactive gases. Our experimental results with H2,O2,Ar,CF4 seem ro verify this formula. In addition we find the voltage levels for various gases in the descending order of CF4>O2=Ar>H2 in high pressure region, while H2>CF4>O2>Ar in low pressure region. When H2 and CF4 were mixed, we observe the overall voltage dominated by the gas with lower breakdown volotage.
