  • The compressive strength and electrical resistance of pitch-based carbon fiber (CF) in cementitious materials are explored to determine the feasibility of its use as a functional material in construction. The most widely used CFs are manufactured from polyacrylonitrile (PAN-based CF). Alternatively, short CFs are obtained in an economical way using pitch as a precursor in a melt-blown process (pitch-based CF), which is cheaper and more eco-friendly method because this pitch-based CF is basically recycled from petroleum residue. In the construction field, PAN-based CFs in the form of fabric are used for rehabilitation purposes to reinforce concrete slabs and piers because of their high mechanical properties. However, studies have revealed that construction materials with pitch-based CF are not popular. This study explores the compressive strength and electrical resistances of a cement paste prism using pitch-based CF.

  • Modem version of supersonic jet fighter aircraft must have been guaranteed appropriate controllability and stability in HAoA(High Angle of Attack). The HAoA flight control law have two parts, one is control law of departure prevention and the other is control law of departure recovery support. The control laws of departure prevention for advanced jet trainer consist of HAoA limiter, roll command limiter and rudder fader. The control laws of departure recovery support are consist of yaw-rate limiter and MPO(Manual Pitch Override) mode. The guideline of pitch rocking using MPO mode is simple, but operating skill of pitch rocking is very difficult by the pilot with inexperience of departure situation. Therefore, automatic deep stall recovery system is necessary. The system called the "Automatic Pitch Rocker System" or APRS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of deep stall, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the design and validation for APRS to recovery of an deep stall without manual pitch rocking by the pilot. Also, this system is designed to recovery of speed, attitude and altitude after deep stall recovery using ATCS (Automatic Thrust Control System) and autopilot. Finally, this system is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using HQS (Handling Quality Simulator).

  • The lithium ion battery has applied to various fields of energy storage systems such as electric vehicle and potable electronic devices in terms of high energy density and long-life cycle. Despite of various research on the electrode and electrolyte materials, there is a lack of research for investigating of the binding materials to replace polymer based binder. In this study, we have investigated petroleum pitch/polymer composite with various ratios between petroleum pitch and polymer in order to optimize the electrochemical and physical performance of the lithium-ion battery based on petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder. The electrochemical and physical performances of the petroleum pitch/polymer composite binder based lithium-ion battery were evaluated by using a charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and universal testing machine (UTM). As a result, the petroleum pitch(MP-50)/polymer(PVDF) composite (5:5 wt % ratio) binder based lithium-ion battery showed 1.29 gf mm-1 of adhesion strength with 144 mAh g-1 of specific dis-charge capacity and 93.1 % of initial coulombic efficiency(ICE) value.

  • Objective: To compare image quality and radiation dose of high-pitch dual-source spiral cardiothoracic computed tomography (CT) between non-electrocardiography (ECG)-synchronized and prospectively ECG-triggered data acquisitions in young children with congenital heart disease. Materials and Methods: Eighty-six children (${\leq}3$ years) with congenital heart disease who underwent high-pitch dual-source spiral cardiothoracic CT were included in this retrospective study. They were divided into two groups (n = 43 for each; group 1 with non-ECG-synchronization and group 2 with prospective ECG triggering). Patient-related parameters, radiation dose, and image quality were compared between the two groups. Results: There were no significant differences in patient-related parameters including age, cross-sectional area, body density, and water-equivalent area between the two groups (p > 0.05). Regarding radiation dose parameters, only volume CT dose index values were significantly different between group 1 ($1.13{\pm}0.09mGy$) and group 2 ($1.07{\pm}0.12mGy$, p < 0.02). Among image quality parameters, significantly higher image noise ($3.8{\pm}0.7$ Hounsfield units [HU] vs. $3.3{\pm}0.6HU$, p < 0.001), significantly lower signal-to-noise ratio ($105.0{\pm}28.9$ vs. $134.1{\pm}44.4$, p = 0.001) and contrast-to-noise ratio ($84.5{\pm}27.2$ vs. $110.1{\pm}43.2$, p = 0.002), and significantly less diaphragm motion artifacts ($3.8{\pm}0.5$ vs. $3.7{\pm}0.4$, p < 0.04) were found in group 1 compared with group 2. Image quality grades of cardiac structures, coronary arteries, ascending aorta, pulmonary trunk, lung markings, and chest wall showed no significant difference between groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In high-pitch dual-source spiral pediatric cardiothoracic CT, additional ECG triggering does not substantially reduce motion artifacts in young children with congenital heart disease.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of high temperature drying to pitch pine (Pinus rigida) lumber, especially intended for use as lamina of structural glued laminated timber (glulam), to enhance the efficient utilization and provide added-value to that species. The high temperature schedule and drying procedures utilized were shown to be reasonable for drying glulam lamina due to the occurrence of small moisture gradients, minimal residual drying stress, and low warpage. Through preliminary tests, it was confirmed that residual resin at lamina surfaces did not adversely affect the gluing process. However, quantitative analysis of resin is required for developing a method to constrain the occurrence of pitch trouble with respect to decreasing long-term adhesive and finish durability of glulam in use after manufacturing. The final moisture content of high temperature dried lamina was much lower than target moisture content and discoloration was more severe than anticipated. In a further study, it will be necessary to determine the optimal drying conditions, such as temperature, humidity, drying time, and top load restraint level, which could best control discoloration, warpage, and moisture content of the lamina, while minimizing fuel expense.

  • In this study, blended feedstock derived pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar was prepared to produce a pitch by thermal polymerization reaction for manufacturing artificial graphite materials. The aromaticity value of 0.355 and 0.818 was obtained for PFO and coal-tar, respectively. In addition, PFO and coal-tar exhibited the difference tendency of weight loss curve for thermogravimetric analysis, which is related to the structural stability depending on the aromaticity and functional groups. The production characteristics confirmed that the pitch derived PFO showed lower production yield and higher softening point than that using blended feedstock. In particular, when comparing P360 (138.5 ℃) and B420 (141.4 ℃) having similar softening points, the production yields of both pitches exhibited 29.89 and 49.03 wt%, respectively. This is mainly due to the blending of PFO and coal-tar having high pitch polymerization reactivity including a large amount of alkyl groups and coal-tar having high thermal stability. This phenomenon indicated that the increased production yield is because of a synergic effect of both the high reactivity of PFO and thermal stability of coal-tar.

  • In this study, the thermo-rheological behaivors of petroleum pitches with different softening points were studied, and a B-stage phenolic resins/petroleum pitches blends were prepared by adding petroleum pitches to the phenolic resins. As a result, the petroleum pitch with different softening points decreased the fluidity of the petroleum pitch as the Quinoline insoluble (QI) content increased and showed the viscous properties of the solid. In addition, the effect of adding petroleum pitches having different softening points on the thermo-rheological properties of phenolic resins was investigated. When petroleum pitch with a high softening point was added, the fluidity of the phenolic resin was reduced, and the hardening behavior was fast. It was possible to control the curing rate and curing behavior of the phenolic resin by adding petroleum pitches of different softening points. Among them, the phenolic resin mixture to which P-Pitch 2 was added has a higher fluidity than other blends under the same curing temperature condition.

  • This study is concerned with the production of carbon fiber reinforced carbon(C/C) with polyaromatic mesophase pitch as matrix precursor and with the investigation of friction-wear characteristics in ambient air using a constant speed type of friction tester. The main problem in using the polyaromatic mesophase as the matrix precursor is the high viscosity which may limit the complete impregnation of the fiber preform in the vacuum. To solve these problems two dimensional carbon fiber fabrics were infiltrated with meso-phase pitch in the pitch impregnator. After the impregnation and the heat treatment process. C/C com-posites were characterized by density porosity to monitor the influence of high pressure and temperature. It showed that the bulk density was increased and the apparent porosity and the density increasing rate was reduced as repeating the impregnation the carbonization and the heat treatment. The friction-wear charac-teristics of C/C composites were investigated by measuring the average friction coefficient and the specific wear rate as functions friction speed and friction pressure using a constant speed type of friction tester. C/C composite4s showed the average friction coefficient to be reduced as increasing the friction speed and the friction pressure.

  • The flow and noise characteristics of the regenerative blower are evaluated experimentally. To decrease the noise of regenerative blower at a high frequency, we arrange the impeller vanes unevenly by special formula. The uneven pitch formular consists of the combination of trigonometric function. The magnitude of degree between each vanes and the control parameters of trigonometric functions are main design parameters for the uneven pitch. The flow characteristics of even and uneven impellers are tested by the fan tester and compared each results. The efficiency of a blower is calculated by the axial power using a dynamo system. The noise property of designed impeller is measured in an anechoic room. In this study, we certify that the uneven pitch impeller is effective in the noise reduction at a high frequency.
