Hydrodynamic ram phenomenon could be generated by external threats such as impact and blast in the aircraft. High strain rate deformation caused by the hydrodynamic ram phenomenon is one of the main factors to influence structural survivability. Mechanical properties of composite structure change rapidly under conditions of high strain rate. Therefore, it is necessary to experimentally investigate the influence of strain rates for aircraft structural survivability. In this paper, tensile tests of composite material were conducted for low and high strain rates to investigate the influence of the various strain rates. Tensile modulus increases more compared to tensile strength at high strain rate under hydrodynamic ram condition. Regression analysis was conducted to predict tensile modulus at various strain rates because it is one of the main damaging factors for composite structures under high strain rate conditions. Also, the mechanical properties of composite materials were acquired and analyzed under high strain rate conditions. It is hypothesized that the results from this study would be used for designing aircraft composite structures and evaluation considering structural survivability.

When RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures are exposed to sea water, steel corrosion can occur and this leads a degradation of structural performance. Referring the electro-deposition system with sea water from the 1st step research, durability and structural performance are evaluated in coated steel and RC members containing it in the 2nd research. In the durability performance test, Half Cell Potential test is performed and the coated steel is evaluated to have the high resistance to corrosion, which shows only 35% of corrosion velocity in normal (bare) steel. In the structural performance test, tensile strength, adhesive strength, and flexural/shear in RC member are performed. For the electro-deposit coated steel, increasing ratios of 3.2% and 8.8% are evaluated in the test of tensile strength and adhesive strength, respectively. For the structural test in RC member, there is no big difference between RC members with coated and non-coated steel in ultimate load and failure pattern It is evaluated that the chemical compound with $CaCO_3$ and $Mg(OH)_2$ from electro-deposition causes slightly increased structural performance. The electro-deposit coated steel can be more widely applied after performance verification from several tests like fatigue, resistance to impact, and long term-submerging test.

This study investigates the impact of water immersion and high temperature on the shear strength of cemented sand through direct shear tests. Standard Jumunjin sand was used and cemented with binders, such as ultra-rapid hardening cement and an epoxy aqueous solution. The binder was mixed at concentrations of 4%, 8%, or 12%. Subsequently, cylindrical cemented specimens with a diameter of 64 mm and height of 25 mm were produced using compaction. The curing period was three days, and the specimens were cured under dry air, immersion, and heating conditions. The heating condition involved subjecting the immersed specimens to a microwave oven three times for three minutes to achieve an internal temperature of approximately 90℃. Regardless of the binder type, the cohesion of the cemented sand increased with higher binder content, whereas the internal friction angle exhibited a slight increase or decrease. Compared with ultra-rapid hardening cemented sand, epoxy-cemented sand displayed an average cohesion that was five times higher and an internal friction angle that was 10° higher. Overall, irrespective of binder type, the shear strength decreased during water immersion and increased during heating. Notably, the epoxy-cemented sand exhibited a three-fold increase in cohesion and a more than 20° increase in the internal friction angle during heating.

In this study, a piezoelectric smart sensor that can be embedded inside of concrete structures is developed to investigate the early stage of concrete curing. A waterproof coating is used to protect the piezoelectric sensor from moistures of concrete mixture. Also, a mortar case is utilized to encapsulate the sensor to protect it from impact loads. To estimate the strength of concrete, a self-sense guided-wave actuated sensing technique is applied. In the guided wave, its velocity is varied according to the mechanical properties of concrete such as modulus of elasticity. Because modulus of elasticity directly affects the strength of concrete, the guidedwave's velocity also affects the concrete strength development. To verify the feasibility of using the proposed approach, the smart sensor was embedded into a 100MPa concrete cylinder and the self-sense guided wave is continuously measured throughout the curing process. The measurements showed that the propagation time (TOF) of the measured guided waves gradually decreased as the curing age increased. Especially, at the early age of the curing process, the variation of the TOF was very significant. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a linear relationship between the TOF of the self-sense guided waves and the strength of concrete existed. It is safe to conclude that the proposed approach can be used very effectively in monitoring of the strength development of high strength concrete structures.

Recently, the importance of the industrial warehouse floor has been increasing due to the development of the distribution and logistics industry. In this present study, an early-hardening polymer floor mortar which can compensate for the limitation of conventional cement based floor mortar regarding fluidity and long curing time was developed. In order to achieve the early-hardening of mortar characteristic ultra rapid hardening cement was used as binder. Four types of mixture proportions in accordance with the vinyl acetate ethylene(VAE) polymer contents with range from 10% to 20% and the other proto proportion without VAE polymer were designed. Mechanical experiments including the fluidity test, compressive strength test, bending test, bond test, and abrasion test were conducted for all mixture proportions. From the flow test result, it was possible to achieve the high flow with 250 mm by controlling the amount of superplasticizer. The incorporation of VAE polymer was found to affect the compressive strength reduction, however, the flexural strength was higher than that of the proto mixture, and it was evaluated to increase the compressive strength / flexural strength ratio. Moreover, at least 2.6 times higher bond strength and more than 4 times higher abrasion resistance were secured. From the mechanical experiments results, the optimum mixing ratio of the VAE polymer was determined to be 10%. As a result of application and monitoring, it shows that it has excellent resistance to cracking, discoloration, impact, and scratch as well as bond performance compared to the cement based floor mortar.

Polymer composite are increasingly considered as structural components for use in civil engineering, on account of their enhanced strength-to-weight ratios. Unsaturated polyester (UP) resin have been widely used for the matrix of composites such as FRP and polymer composite, due to its excellent adhesive. Polymer nanocomposites are new class of composites derived from the nano scale inorganic particles with dimensions typically in the range of 1 to 1000 nm that are dispersed in the polymer matrix homogeneously. Owing to the high aspect ratio of the fillers, mechanical, thermal, flame, retardant and barrier properties are enhanced without significant loss of clarity, toughness or impact strength. To prepare the MMT (Montmorillonite)-UP exfoliated nanocomposites, UP was mixed with MMT at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours by using pan mixer. XRD (X-ray diffraction) pattern of the composites and TEM (Transmission Electron Micrographs) showed that the interlayer spacing of the modified MMT were exfoliated in polymer matrix. The mechanical properties also supported these findings, since in general, tensile strength, modulus with modified MMT were higher than those of the composites with unmodified MMT. The thermal stability of MMT-UP nanocomposite is better than that of pure UP, and its glass transition temperature is higher than that of pure UP. The polymer concrete made with MMT-UP nanocomposite has better mechanical properties than of pure UP. Therefore, it is suggested that strength and elastic modulus of polymer concrete was found to be positively tensile strength and tensile modulus of the MMT-UP nanocomposites.

Stainless steel bolts (SSB) are increasingly utilized in bolted steel connections due to their good mechanical performance and excellent corrosion resistance. Fire accidents, which commonly occur in engineering scenarios, pose a significant threat to the safety of steel frames. The post-fire behavior of SSB has a significant influence on the structural integrity of steel frames, and neglecting the effect of temperature can lead to serious accidents in engineering. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the performance of SSB at elevated temperatures and their residual strength after a fire incident. To investigate the mechanical behavior of SSB after fire, 114 bolts with grades A4-70 and A4-80, manufactured from 316L austenitic stainless steel, were subjected to elevated temperatures ranging from 20℃ to 1200℃. Two different cooling methods commonly employed in engineering, namely cooling at ambient temperatures (air cooling) and cooling in water (water cooling), were used to cool the bolts. Tensile tests were performed to examine the influence of elevated temperatures and cooling methods on the mechanical behavior of SSB. The results indicate that the temperature does not significantly affect the Young's modulus and the ultimate strength of SSB. Up to 500℃, the yield strength increases with temperature, but this trend reverses when the temperature exceeds 500℃. In contrast, the ultimate strain shows the opposite trend. The strain hardening exponent is not significantly influenced by the temperature until it reaches 500℃. The cooling methods employed have an insignificant impact on the performance of SSB. When compared to high-strength bolts, 316L austenitic SSB demonstrate superior fire resistance. Design models for the post-fire mechanical behavior of 316L austenitic SSB, encompassing parameters such as the elasticity modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, ultimate strain, and strain hardening exponent, are proposed, and a more precise stress-strain model is recommended to predict the mechanical behavior of 316L austenitic SSB after a fire incident.

Mica capacitor is being adopted for high voltage firing unit of guided weapon system because of its superior impact enduring property relative to ceramic capacitor. Reliability of localized mica high voltage capacitors was verified through environmental test like terminal strength test, humidity test, thermal shock test and accelerated life test for application to high voltage firing unit. Failure mode of mica capacitor is a decrease of insulation resistance and its final dielectric breakdown. Main constants of accelerated life model were derived experimentally and voltage constant and activation energy were 5.28 and 0.805 eV respectively. Lifetime of mica capacitor at normal use condition was calculated to be 38.5 years by acceleration factor, 496, and lifetime at accelerated condition and this long lifetime confirmed that mica high voltage capacitor could be applied for firing unit.

In recent years, frequent terror or military attacks by explosion or impact accidents have occurred. Examplary case of these attacks were World Trade Center collapse and US Department of Defense Pentagon attack on Sept. 11 of 2001. These attacks of the civil infrastructure have induced numerous casualties and property damage, which raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks. However, a existing design procedure for civil infrastructures do not consider a protective design for extreme loading scenario. Also, the extreme loading researches of prestressed concrete (PSC) member, which widely used for nuclear containment vessel, gas tank, bridges, and tunnel, are insufficient due to experimental limitations of loading characteristics. To protect concrete structures against extreme loading such as explosion and impact with high strain rate, understanding of the effect, characteristic, and propagation mechanism of extreme loadings on structures is needed. Therefore, in this paper, to evaluate the impact resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded prestressed concrete member, impact tests were carried out on $1400mm{\times}1000mm{\times}300mm$ for reinforced concrete (RC), prestressed concrete without rebar (PS), prestressed concrete with rebar (PSR, general PSC) specimens. According to test site conditions, impact tests were performed with 14 kN impactor with drop height of 10 m, 5 m, 4 m for preliminary tests and 3.5 m for main tests. Also, in this study, the procedure, layout, and measurement system of impact tests were established. The impact resistance capacity was measured using crack patterns, damage rates, measuring value such as displacement, acceleration, and residual structural strength. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design and impact numerical simulation under impact loading.

High-rise buildings (HRBs) are considered one of the most common structures nowadays due to the population growth, especially in crowded towns. The lack of land in crowded cities has led to the convergence of the HRBs and the absence of any gaps between them, especially in lands with weak soil (e.g., liquefaction-prone soil), but then during earthquakes, these structures may be exposed to the risk of collision between them due to the large increase in the horizontal displacements, which may be destructive in some cases to the one or both of these adjacent buildings. To evaluate methods of reducing the risk of collision between adjacent twin HRBs, this research investigates three vibration control methods to reduce the risk of collision due to five different earthquakes for the case of two adjacent reinforced concrete (RC) twin high-rise buildings of 15 floors height without gap distance between them, founded on raft foundation supported on piles inside a liquefaction-prone soil. Contact pounding elements between the two buildings (distributed at all floor levels and at the raft foundation level) are used to make the impact strength between the two buildings realistic. The mitigation methods investigated are the base isolation, the tuned mass damper (TMD) method (using traditional TMDs), and the pounding tuned mass damper (PTMD) method (using PTMDs connected between the two buildings). The results show that the PTMD method between the two adjacent RC twin high-rise buildings is more efficient than the other two methods in mitigating the earthquake-induced pounding risk.
