  • In this study, the frequency domain method which utilizes the evaluation of changes in the structural mode shape is adopted to identify regions which contain localized damages. Frequency response function (FRF) values corresponding to the modal frequency, analogous to the mode shape coefficients, are used since change in natural frequency of the system is usually insignificant for localized damage. This method requires only few sensors to obtain the dynamic response of the structure at specific locations to determine the FRF via fast-Fourier transform (FFT). Numerical examples of an aluminum plate, which includes damages of varying severity, locations and combinations of multiple locations, are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. An experimental verification of the method is also done using an aluminum plate with two different degrees of damage, namely a half-through notch and a through notch. The inconsistency in attaining the FRF values for practical applications due to varying impact load may be overcome via statistical averaging, although large variations in the loading in terms of the contact duration should still be avoided. Nonetheless, this method needs special attention when the damages induce notable changes in the modal frequency, such as when the damages are of high severity or cover more extensive area or near the boundary where the support condition is modified. This is largely due to the significant decrease in the frequency term compared to the increase in the vibration amplitude. For practical reasons such as the use of limited number of sensors and to facilitate automation, extending the resolution of this method of identification may not be efficient. Hence, methods based on wave propagation can be employed as a complement on the isolated region to provide an accurate localization as well as to trace the geometry of the damage.

  • Equivalent linear analysis is widely used in estimating local seismic site effects. The soil behavior in the analysis is often assumed to be rate-independent and is not influenced by the seismic loading frequency. Laboratory results, however, indicate that cohesive soil behavior is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. A new equivalent linear analysis method that accounts for the loading frequency dependent soil behavior is developed and used to perform a series of one dimensional site response analyses. Results indicate that while frequency dependent shear modulus has limited influence on computed site response, frequency dependent soil damping greatly filters out high frequency components of the ground motion and thus results in lower response.

  • This work proposes an integrated high frequency divider with an inductive peaking technique implemented in a current mode logic (CML) frequency divider. The proposed divider is composed with a master-slave flip-flop, and the master-slave flip-flop acts as a latch and read circuits which have the differential pair and cross-coupled n-MOSFETs. The cascode bias is applied in an inductive peaking circuit as a current source and the cascode bias is used for its high current driving capability and stable frequency response. The proposed divider is designed with $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process, and the simulation used to evaluate the divider is performed with phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit as a feedback circuit. A divide-by-two operation is properly performed at a high frequency of 20 GHz. In the output frequency spectrum of the PLL, a peak frequency of 2 GHz is obtained witha divide-by-eight circuit at an input frequency of 250 MHz. The reference spur is obtained at -64 dBc and the power consumption is 13 mW.

  • The seismic response characteristics of a port structure were investigated by the earthquake analyses of the structure subjected to high-, low-frequency component, and Uljin earthquakes. In the Fluid-Structure-Soil Interaction(FSSI) analysis, the fluid is modeled by the 4-node quadrilateral element which is a modification of a structural plane element, and the port structure and foundation is modelled by the plane strain element. Since the present method directly models the fluid-structure-soil interaction system using finite element method, it can be easily applied to the dynamic analysis of a 2-D fluid-port-soil system with complex geometry. The results of the seismic coefficient. added mass, and FSSI methods are compared. The results showed that the earthquake with high frequency components more affects the seismic response of the structure than that of low frequency components.

  • This study identified heart response of participants while listening to sounds which have 1/f fluctuations with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient. The participants were engaged in emotional stress work. Prior studies related to 1/f fluctuation sound have reported that sound source can alleviate psychological and physiological state of users. Subjects of this study were exposed to sound with three levels of ${\alpha}$ gradient. Heart response of subjects were measured with Photoplethysmography(PPG) sensor simultaneously. The dependent variables of this study were beat per minute(BPM), very low frequency percent of pulse rate variability (VLF percent), the standard deviation of all normal RR intervals (SDNN), and high frequency power(HF power). Subject showed arousal response when exposed to sound with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient of 3 whereas the sound with exponent ${\alpha}$ gradient of 1 and 2 resulted in relax effect. The characteristic of 1/f fluctuation sounds can be applied to alleviate stress for employers under emotional labor.

  • This paper presents two systems of two-stage electrohydraulic servovalve with a nozzle-flapper pilot stage, which is controlled by stack-type piezoelectric elements. Two flapper moving mechanisms proposed in this research can compensate for the hysteresis problem and thermal expansion of the piezoelectric elements. The experimental results show that the first flapper moving mechanism has the frequency response of over 500 Hz and the second one has the response of over 600 Hz. And the first simplified servovalve system rising the first flapper moving mechanism has the frequency response of about 150 Hz, and the second system has the response of about 300 Hz at the supply pressure of 210 bar

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic response characteristics of Wolsong nuclear power plant (NPP) structures for the Kyeongju earthquake(ML=4.3) occurred on June 26, 1997. The seismograms are obtained from five accelerographs of nuclear power plant at Wolsong, Kyeongbuk. The distance from the epicenter is about 25km. The peak acceleration (PA) due to the earthquake is 0.0235g, which is far lower value than that of design basis earthquake(DBE). The PA at the containment wall is about twice as large as that at free field. Also, the higher the accelerograph is located in, the larger the PA is measured to be From the response spectrum analysis, the dominant frequency of the response is close to 4 Hz, which is similar to the free field is poor because of contamination by high frequency waves as a result of reflection and diffraction between ground and NPP structure. We are of opinion that the accelerograph at the free field should be moved approximately twice the building dimension away from the containment structure.

  • Although it is ideal that the sound with the range of 20 ~ 20,000 Hz is produced by the loudspeaker system composing of only one loudspeaker unit, it is almost impossible now. Therefore, the audible frequency range is now produced by the loudspeaker system, which is consisted of more than two loudspeaker units. The multi-way loudspeaker system certainly requires a crossover filter, which is divided the audible frequency into low and high frequency ranges. The crossover frequency of filter usually is in the range of 1 ~ 4 kHz, the frequency range can largely affect to the sound articulation and quality. It is an example that the phase and amplitude at the crossover frequency can be different from each other, due to the variously reasons. Conversely, they can not produce the smooth frequency response due to the different distance between the two loudspeaker units and electrical properties. As a result, the sound articulation and quality can be degraded. Therefore, the phase and amplitude response at the crossover frequency has to be deeply considered, in order to exactly match the woofer and tweeter. In this study, it is proposed the methods which are the flat frequency and phase response to be obtained by adjusting of the delay time between loudspeaker units, and the choice of filter to be considered the roll-off properties of each unit. It is achieved the frequency response with ${\pm}1$ dB, and the sound articulation is also improved.

  • In hydraulic control system turbine and gear motor type flowmeters are widely used to measure the flow rate under steady flow conditions. With the recent growth of interest in the measurement of instantaneous values of unsteady flow rate the test of the transient response of these flowmeters are in some significance. however an unsteady flow rate mea-surment and its calibration method with a fast response and a high accuracy have not beendeveloped. In this research particularly the dynamic characteristics of turbine and gear motor type flowmeters are investigated experimentally and simple mathematical models are proposed. The measured flow rate waveforms are compared with those by remote instan-taneous flow rate measurement method(RIFM) which has been developed by author and used for calibration As the result of frequency response test gain and phase between the measured flow rate waveforms by turbine type flowmeter and those estimated by RIFM are in good agreement up to 70Hz For the gear motor type flowmeter th simulated results by a math-ematical model proposed here agree well with the experiment nearly up to 100Hz. Also it if sound that the pressure drop across the flowmeter is increased in proportion to the frequency of the flow rate variation in a high frequency region of more than 100Hz. It can be explained that the dealy of gear motor type flowmeter in high frequency regionis mainly attributed to a first order delay consisting of the inertia of gears and internal leakage of the gear motor.

  • A complete high-frequency small-signal circuit model of a 40 Gb/s butterfly electroabsorption modulator integrated laser module is presented for the first time to analyze and optimize its electro-optic (E/O) response and reflection characteristics. An agreement between measured and simulated results demonstrates the accuracy and validity of the procedures. By optimizing the bonding wire length and the impedance of the coplanar waveguide transmission lines, the E/O response increases approximately 5% to 15% from 20 GHz to 33 GHz, while the signal injection efficiency increases from approximately 15% to 25% over 18 GHz to 35 GHz.
