  • Some digital partical response continuous phase modulation signals such as 3RC, 3SRC, 4SRC, and TFM have cconstant envelope characteristics and compact power spectra. However, their bit error rates in fast fading environments are too high when a simple frequency detection is used. This is due to high inter symbol interference resulting from adjacent bits. The improvement of BER performance by using DFE(Decision Feedback Equalization) to cancel the ISI of one adjacent bit is theoretically investigated in this paper. Numerical resuls are presentes to compare the BER performance of frequency detection with and without decision feedback equalization.

  • A simple postprocessing algorithm is proposed to reduce the blocky artifacts of Block Discrete Cosine Transform (BDCT) coded images. Since the block noise is mostly antisymmetric relative to the block boundaries, we model the blocky noise as one-dimensional antisymmertric functions made by superposing DCT basis functions. observing the frequency characteristics of the noies model, we approximate its high frequency components as those of step functions. Then the proposed postprocessing algorithm eliminates the carefully selected high frequency components of step functions in the one-dimensional sN-point DCT domain, when the encoding block size is $N\;{\times}\;N$. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can also be performed in the spatial domain without computational burden of transforms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm well reduces the blocky artifacts in both subjective and objectie viewpoints.

  • A GIS-based landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) was carried out using frequency ratio (FR), modified frequency ratio (M-FR), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and modified analytic hierarchy process (M-AHP) methods to identify and delineate the potential failure zones along the Halong - Vandon expressway. The thematic layers of various landslide causative factors were generated for modeling in GIS, including geology, rainfall, distance to fault, distance to road, slope, aspect, landuse, density of landslide, vertical relief, and horizontal relief. In addition, a landslide inventory along the road network was prepared using data provided by the management department during the course of construction and operation from 2017 to 2019, when many landslides were documented. The validation results showed that the M-FR method had the highest AUC value (AUC = 0.971), which was followed by the FR method with AUC = 0.961. The AUC values were 0.939 and 0.892 for the M-AHP and AHP methods, respectively. The generated LSM obtained from M-FR method classified the study area into five susceptibility classes: very low (0), low (0-1), moderate (1-2), high (2-3), and very high (3-4) classes, which could be useful for various stakeholders like planners, engineers, designers, and local public for future construction and maintenance in the study area.

  • This paper presents an area-efficient architecture to implement the high-speed Reed-Solomon(RS) decoder, which is used in a variety of communication systems such as wireless and very high-speed optical communications. We present the new pipelined-recursive Modified Euclidean(PrME) architecture to achieve high-throughput rate and reducing hardware-complexity using folding technique. The proposed pipelined recursive architecture can reduce the hardware complexity about 80$\%$ compared to the conventional systolic-array and fully-parallel architecture. The proposed RS decoder has been designed and implemented with the 0.13um CMOS technology in a supply voltage of 1.2 V. The result show that total number of gate is 393 K and it has a data processing rate of S Gbits/s at clock frequency of 625 MHz. The proposed area-efficient architecture can be readily applied to the next generation FEC devices for high-speed optical communications as well as wireless communications.

  • Since powerline for powerline communications (PLC) is designed for supplying electric power using 60 Hz wave, they will have different electrical behaviors for high data rate PLC whose bandwidth is allocated between 1 MHz and 30 MHz. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the different properties in this frequency bandwidth for the high data rate PLC. In this paper, low voltage (220V) powerline impedance for indoor high data rate PLC in between 1 MHz and 30 MHz is measured. For measurement a low voltage coupling unit is made and a vector network analyzer is used. A T-equivalent circuit of the low voltage coupling unit is obtained and then powerline impedance is derived by measuring the reflection coefficient of the total powerline network. With the method proposed, impedance is measured in case of a general korean apartment and its property is analyzed. Measurement shows that the average impedance is about 100Ω.

  • This paper discusses how to effectively design a next-generation wireless communication system that can possibly provide very high data-rate transmissions and versatile quality services. In order to accommodate the sophisticated user requirements and diversified user environments of the next-generation systems, it should be designed to take an efficient and flexible structure for multiple access and resource allocation. In addition, the design should be optimized for cost-effective usage of resources and for efficient operation in a multi-cell environment. As orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) has turned out in recent researches to be one of the most promising multiple access techniques that can possibly meet all those requirements through efficient radio spectrum utilization, we take OFDMA as the basic framework in the next-generation wireless communications system design. So, in this paper, we focus on introducing an OFDMA-based downlink system design that employs the techniques of hybrid multiple access (HMA) and frequency group (FG) in conjunction with intra-frequency group averaging (IFGA). The HMA technique combines various multiple access schemes on the basis of OFDMA system, adopting the multiple access scheme that best fits to the given user condition in terms of mobility, service, and environment. The FG concept and IFGA technique help to reduce the feedback overhead of OFDMA system and the other-cell interference (OCI) problem by grouping the sub-carriers based on coherence band-widths and by harmonizing the channel condition and OCI of the grouped sub-carriers.

  • In this paper, an estimation method of intercell carrier frequency-offset(CFO) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM)-based cellular systems is proposed for a user's equipment(UE), especially at the cell boundary, in downlink channels. Also, after deriving an estimation method of intercell CFO from the signals received by adjacent base stations(BSs), we propose a cell-searching method using the estimated CFOs. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed methods can uniquely estimate the intercell CFOs and identify the target BS with a high detection probability.

  • There are the frequency shift keying(FSK), phase shift keying(PSK) and amplitude shift keying(ASK) in the conventional digital communications method. In this paper, We proposed a new robust wavelet shift keying system using scaling and wavelet function in the digital communication. Wavelet Transform consist of a low frequency and high frequency coefficient. When the input signal is one, if it finds the impulse response, the signal is separated from the scaling and wavelet function. The binary data is encoded by modulator which assigned the scaling function to 1(one), and wavelet to zero(0). It was demonstrated by experiment that the proposed algorithm can be a robust noise.

  • We describe a single-channel rubidium (Rb) radio-frequency atomic magnetometer (RFAM) as a receiver that takes magnetic signal resonating with Zeeman splitting of the ground state of Rb. We optimize the performance of the RFAM by recording the response signal and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in various parameters and obtain a noise level of 159 $fT{\sqrt{Hz}}$ around 30 kHz. When a resonant radiofrequency magnetic field with a peak amplitude of 8.0 nT is applied, the bandwidth and signal-to-noise ratio are about 650 Hz and 88 dB, respectively. It is a good agreement that RFAM using alkali atoms is suitable for receiving signals in the very low frequency (VLF) carrier band, ranging from 3 kHz to 30 kHz. This study shows the new capabilities of the RFAM in communications applications based on magnetic signals with the VLF carrier band. Such communication can be expected to expand the communication space by overcoming obstacles through the high magnetic sensitive RFAM.

  • For a chi-squared test, which is a statistical method used to test the independence of a contingency table of two factors, the expected frequency of each cell must be greater than 5. The percentage of cells with an expected frequency below 5 must be less than 20% of all cells. However, there are many cases in which the regional expected frequency is below 5 in general small area studies. Even in large-scale surveys, it is difficult to forecast the expected frequency to be greater than 5 when there is small area estimation with subgroup analysis. Another statistical method to test independence is to use the Bayes factor, but since there is a high ratio of data dependency due to the nature of the Bayesian approach, the low expected frequency tends to decrease the precision of the test results. To overcome these limitations, we will borrow information from areas with similar characteristics and pool the data statistically to propose a pooled Bayes test of independence in target areas. Jo et al. (2021) suggested hierarchical Bayesian pooling models for small area estimation of categorical data, and we will introduce the pooled Bayes factors calculated by expanding their restricted pooling model. We applied the pooled Bayes factors using bone mineral density and body mass index data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States and compared them with chi-squared tests often used in tests of independence.
