Titanium has many special characteristics such as specific high strength, low elastic modulus, excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, etc. Beta titanium alloys, because of their good formability and strength, are used for jet engines, and as turbine blades in the automobile and aerospace industries. Low cost beta titanium alloys were developed to take economic advantage of the use of low-cost beta stabilizers such as Mo, Fe, and Cr. Generally, adding a trace of boron leads to grain refinement in casted titanium alloys due to the pinning effect of the TiB phases. This study analyzed and evaluated the microstructural and mechanical properties after plastic deformation and heat treatment in boron-modified Ti-2Al-9.2Mo-2Fe alloy. The results indicate that a trace of boron addition made grains finer; this refinement effect was found to be maintained after subsequent processes such as hot forging and solution treatment. This can effectively reduce the number of required manufacturing process steps and lead to savings in the overall cost as well as low-cost beta elements.

In order to evaluate the deformation and stiffness of frame structure for fishery, composed of unit platforms which made of two concentric high density polyethylene buoys fixed by clamps and belts and rubber hinge components, under wave, the structural analysis for the square type of the structure was carried out by using finite element methods. The accurate physical properties of rubber hinge components determined by material tests were an important parameter to evaluate more reliable structural stability for the structure. The idealization to beam element with equivalent stiffness and rubber element with linearity for rubber hinges was necessary for the modeling of rubber component which has hyper-elastic characteristics. In addition, it was shown that the structural response of the structure under wave was larger in the hogging condition than that of in the still water or in the sagging condition.

Electron beam melting (EBM) is one of powder based additive manufacturing technology used to produce parts for high geometrical complexity and directly with three-dimensional computer aided design (CAD) model. It is kind of the most promising methods with additive manufacturing for a wide range of medical applications, such as orthopedic, dental implant, and etc. This research has been investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of as fabricated and hot iso-static pressing (HIP) processed specimens, which are made by an Arcam A1 EBM system. The Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy powder was used as a material for the 3 dimensional printing specimens. Mechanical properties were conducted with EBM manufacturing and computer numerical control (CNC) machining specimens, respectively. Surface morphological analysis was conducted by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for their surface, dissected plan, and fractured surface after tensile test. The mechanical properties were included tensile stress-strain and nano-indentation test as a analysis level between nano and macro. As following highlighted results, the stress-strain curves on elastic region were almost similar between as fabricated and HIP processed while the ductile (plastic deformed region) properties were higher with HIP than that of as fabricated processed.

Recently prestressed concrete bridges are generally used instead of reinforced concrete. PSC is more durable than RC because it can reduce crack problems, reinforcement corrosion, leakage and carbonation etc. And also PSC is more effective because there is no crack in tension area, and the entire concrete section is considered in section analysis. And it can reduce section size because vertical component by prestressing force can reduce the shear force. However, using high strength concrete can increase the self weight of bridge because of it's higher density. So the hollowed PPC girder with light weight aggregate can be a alternative. In this study the hollowed PPC girder with light weight aggregate is designed and the performance of hollowed PPC girder is evaluated by experimental tests as well as numerical analysis. As a result, The hollowed PPC girder of light aggregate behaved fully elastically under service load of 110kN, and the plastic behavior was showed after elastic behavior through experimental test, and it can be also estimated by numerical analysis.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to use finite element analysis to predict the fatigue life of an implant system subjected to fatigue load by mastication (chewing force). The reliability and the stability of implant system can be defined in terms of the fatigue strength. Not only an implant is expensive but also it is almost impossible to correct after it is inserted. From a bio-engineering standpoint, the fatigue strength of the dental implant system must be evaluated by simulation (FEA). Material and Methods Finite element analysis and fatigue test are performed to estimate the fatigue strength of the implant system. Mesh of implant is generated with the actual shape and size. In this paper, the fatigue strength of implant system is estimated. U-fit (T. Strong, Korea, internal type). The stress field in implant is calculated by elastic-plastic finite element analysis. The equivalent fatigue stress, considering the contact and preload stretching of a screw by torque for tightening an abutment, is obtained by means of Sine's method. To evaluate the reliability of the calculated fatigue strength, fatigue test is performed. Results: A comparison of the calculated fatigue strength with experimental data showed the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. The initiation points of the fatigue failure in the implant system exist in the region of high equivalent fatigue stress values. Conclusion: The above proposed method for fatigue life estimation tan be applied to other configurations of the differently designed and improved implant. In order to prove reliability of prototype implant, fatigue test should be executed. The proposed method is economical for the prediction of fatigue life because fatigue testing, which is time consuming and precision-dependent, is not required.
This research is aimed to develop the functional clothing designs for disabled women in the manner of investigating design preferences among them by means of questionnaire and interview with 150 disabled women as respondents and interviewees. The findings of this research are summarized as follows: 1. Regarding satisfaction with ready-made clothes, the respondents answered 'very satisfied' (1.6%), 'usually satisfied' (14.1%), 'moderate' (20.3%) and 'unsatisfied' (53.1%), suggesting that they had been generally unsatisfied with ready-made clothes. 2. There were more disabled women preferring to ready-made clothes with one-grade bigger (loose.) size than the actual one (53.1%) instead of completely fitted size (43.8%) when they purchased such clothes. This result indicates that they prefer to ready-made clothes with bigger size than the actual one because most of such clothes are made up of non-elastic materials which may be unfavorable for wearer's activities. 3. It was found that primarily worn upper garment among them was T-shirt (59.4%). The reason may be that T-shirt is favorable for using prosthesis and orthotics such as wheelchair, walking stick and crutches thanks to its remarkably high activity as well as simple to maintain, compared with other kinds of upper garments. 4. Regarding preferences to functional clothing designs, the primarily worn lower garment among them was trousers (85.9%); the reason was easiness to move. The main reasons of avoiding to wear a skirt included 'difficult to move' (40.6%) and 'exposed disabled region' (30.3%). Accordingly, functional clothing for disabled women should be developed in consideration for their individual characteristics of disability associated with the disabled region such as wheelchair user, crutch user or brace user, In addition, the designs should be made so that they are not different from those for non-disabled people.
For the evaluation of the capability of a tubular member of an offshore structure to absorb the collision energy, a simple method can be employed for the collision analysis without performing the detailed analysis. The most common simple method is the rigid-plastic method. However, in this method any characteristics for horizontal movement and rotation at the ends of the corresponding tubular member are not included. In a real structural system of an offshore structure, tubular members sustain a certain degree of elastic support from the adjacent structure. End fixity has influences in the behaviors of a tubular member. Three-dimensional FEM analysis can include the effect of end fixity fully, however in viewpoints of the inherent computational complexities of the 3-D approach, this is not the recommendable analysis at the initial design stage. In this paper, influence of end fixity on the behaviors of a tubular member is investigated, through a new approach and other approaches. A new analysis approach that includes the flexibility of the boundary points of the member is developed here. The flexibility at the ends of a tubular element is extracted using the rational reduction of the modeling characteristics. The property reduction is based on the static condensation of the related global stiffness matrix of a model to end nodal points of the tubular element. The load-displacement relation at the collision point of the tubular member with and without the end flexibility is obtained and compared. The new method lies between the rigid-plastic method and the 3-demensional analysis. It is self-evident that the rigid-plastic method gives high strengthening membrane effect of the member during global deformation, resulting in a steeper slope than the present method. On the while, full 3-D analysis gives less strengthening membrane effect on the member, resulting in a slow going load-displacement curve. Comparison of the load-displacement curves by the new approach with those by conventional methods gives the figures of the influence of end fixity on post-yielding behaviors of the relevant tubular member. One of the main contributions of this investigation is the development of an analytical rational procedure to figure out the post-yielding behaviors of a tubular member in offshore structures.

This paper is concerned with the dynamics of hyperelastic solids and structures. We seek for a smart control actuation that produces a desired (prescribed) displacement field in the presence of transient imposed forces. In the literature, this problem is denoted as displacement tracking, or also as shape morphing problem. One talks about shape control, when the displacements to be tracked do vanish. In the present paper, it is assumed that the control actuation is provided by imposed eigenstrains, e.g., by the electric field in piezoelectric actuators, or by thermal actuators, or via analogous physical effects, such as magneto-striction or pre-stress. Structures with a controlled eigenstrain-type actuation belong to the class of smart structures. The action of the eigenstrains can be conveniently characterized by actuation stresses. Our theoretical derivations are performed in the framework of the theory of small incremental dynamic deformations superimposed upon a statically pre-deformed configuration of a hyperelastic solid or structure. We particularly ask for a distribution of incremental actuation stresses, such that the incremental displacements follow exactly a prescribed trajectory field, despite the imposed incremental forces are present. An exact solution of this problem is presented under the assumption that the actuation stresses can be tailored freely and applied everywhere within the body. Extending a Neumann-type solution strategy, it is shown that the actuation stresses due to the distributed control eigenstrains must satisfy certain quasi-static equilibrium conditions, where auxiliary body-forces and auxiliary surface tractions are to be taken into account. The latter auxiliary loading can be directly computed from the imposed forces and from the desired displacement field to be tracked. Hence, despite the problem is a dynamic one, a straightforward computation of proper actuator distributions can be obtained in the framework of quasi-static equilibrium conditions. Necessary conditions for the functioning of this concept are presented. Particularly, it must be required that the intermediate configuration is infinitesimally superstable. Previous results of our group for the case of shape control and displacement tracking in linear elastic structures are included as special cases. The high potential of the solution is demonstrated via Finite Element computations for an irregularly shaped four-corner plate in a state of plain strain.

The design of a semi-active (SA) control system addressed to mitigate wind induced structural demand to high wind turbine towers is discussed herein. Actually, the remarkable growth in height of wind turbines in the last decades, for a higher production of electricity, makes this issue pressing than ever. The main objective is limiting bending moment demand by relaxing the base restraint, without increasing the top displacement, so reducing the incidence of harmful "p-delta" effects. A variable restraint at the base, able to modify in real time its mechanical properties according to the instantaneous response of the tower, is proposed. It is made of a smooth hinge with additional elastic stiffness and variable damping respectively given by springs and SA magnetorheological (MR) dampers installed in parallel. The idea has been physically realized at the Denmark Technical University where a 1/20 scale model of a real, one hundred meters tall wind turbine has been assumed as case study for shaking table tests. A special control algorithm has been purposely designed to drive MR dampers. Starting from the results of preliminary laboratory tests, a finite element model of such structure has been calibrated so as to develop several numerical simulations addressed to calibrate the controller, i.e., to achieve as much as possible different, even conflicting, structural goals. The results are definitely encouraging, since the best configuration of the controller leaded to about 80% of reduction of base stress, as well as to about 30% of reduction of top displacement in respect to the fixed base case.
For a nonlinear control system, there are many uncertainties, such as the structural model, controlled parameters and external loads. Although the significant progress has been achieved on the robust control of nonlinear systems through some researches on this issue, there are still some limitations, for instance, the complicated solving process, weak conservatism of system, involuted structures and high order of controllers. In this study, the computational structural mechanics and optimal control theory are adopted to address above problems. The induced norm is the eigenvalue problem in structural mechanics, i.e., the elastic stable Euler critical force or eigenfrequency of structural system. The segment mixed energy is introduced with a precise integration and an extended Wittrick-Williams (W-W) induced norm calculation method. This is then incorporated in the market-based control (MBC) theory and combined with the force analogy method (FAM) to solve the MBC robust strategy (R-MBC) of nonlinear systems. Finally, a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and a 9-stories steel frame structure are analyzed. The results are compared with those calculated by the $H{\infty}$-robust (R-$H{\infty}$) algorithm, and show the induced norm leads to the infinite control output as soon as it reaches the critical value. The R-MBC strategy has a better control effect than the R-$H{\infty}$ algorithm and has the advantage of strong strain capacity and short online computation time. Thus, it can be applied to large complex structures.
