The hight density sludge process (HDS) is a process that has been developed to achieve greatly increased sludge densities compared to those resulting from conventional pH modification systems. This study was carried out to apprehend variation of sludge properties and removal of metals during recycling of the sludge. The principal neutralization and settlement took place in neutralization beaker and mass cylinder. Sludge was recycled, as a volumetric ratios of 20%, 40% and 60%. The pH was controlled in neutralization tanks near 9.5. The average lime consumption rate was about 10g per L of AMD. The increment of sludge density was correlated with the volumetric ratios of recycled sludge.

In this study, we developed a comprehensive correlation for better prediction of the activated sludge concentration in the relationship between measurement of optical density by the Beer's law and sludge properties. Effects of activated sludge properties, which are sludge types and anaerobic storage time, show that absorbance deviation for sludge properties decreased on wavelength of light source near to 950 nm. We also developed a method to measure limitation with non-linear correlation on the measurement of high concentration by the Beer's law using a double layer probe cell and empirical equations.
Excess sludge treatment and disposal currently represent a rising challenge for domestic or wastewater treatment plants due to economic, environmental and regulation factors. Conventional gravity sedimentation process has been widely used in sludge thickening. The operation method of the process is very simple, but the process requires long detention time for sludge thickening, uses polymers, and shows low sludge thickening efficiency. To solve the problems, we studied on DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) system. We use bulking sludge of a paper manufacturing plant. The effects of parameters such as SVI (Sludge Volume Index), storage time, initial concentration and wet density of excess sludge were examined. The results showed that the more SVI was low, the more sludge was thickened. As storage time goes by, SVI was increased and thickening performance was deteriorated. In order to improve flotation performance at high concentration, high recycling ratio and pressure did not increase the concentration due to thickening limitation. The addition of 0.8 g/L of loess was increased flotation efficiency of 1.41 times.
Fiber mats were made at various density levels, using fibers from papermill sludge, ricestraw and various mixtures of the two. The paper mill sludges were collected from Moorim Papermill Co, and Jeonjoo Papermill Co. They were soaked in the liquid sulfur compounds, sulfur-tall oil and sulfurpolyester compounds, and made into fiber-reinforced, sulfur-based composition board. Under optimum conditions of fiber mat preparation and saturation with molten sulfur and modified sulfur, the Young's moduls of the manufactured tiber-reinforced composition board are superior to those of conventional wood-based composition boards. For example, the moduli of elasticity of the composition board made from papermill sludge, with a density of 0.40gm/$cm^3$, were greater than 1,400,000psi as compared 800,000psi for high density hardboard(1.28gm/$cm^3$). The modulus of rupture of the best reinforced composition board manufactured was over 9000psi, comparable to 6000psi of high density hardboard. The proposed Bryant and Lee's theory, "Modified Rule of Mixtures" can be applicable to the nonoriented and short fibrous composition board, when it was modified from "Rule of Mixtures" established by Paul an Jones, and supplemented by Smith and Cox's theory, In the Bryant and Lee's theory of $E_c=\frac{1}{3}aE_fV_f+bE_mV_m$, the constants "a" and "b" for the composition boards made from papermill sludge and the mixtures of ricestraw and the sludge were identified to be in the ranges of 3.29~3.54 and -2.47~-2.80 respectively.
The purpose of this study is to manufacture lightweight aggregates for recycling water treatment sludge, to identify the physical properties of the aggregates, and present a method of utilizing the manufactured lightweight aggregates. The chemical composition and thermal properties were examined via a raw materials analysis. The aggregate examined here was fired by the rapid sintering method and the single-particle density and water absorption rate were measured. Water treatment sludge has high ignition loss and high fire resistance. When 30wt% of purified sludge was added, the single-particle density of the aggregates was in the range of 0.8~1.2g/cm3 at a temperature of 1,150~1,200℃. At temperatures of 1200℃ or higher, ultra-light aggregates having a single-particle density of 0.8 or less could be produced. When applied to concrete by replacing the general aggregate in the concrete, a specimen having strength values of 200 to 450 kgf/cm2 on 28 days was obtained, and when applied as a filter material, the performance was equal to or higher than that of ordinary sand.

Most of biological treatment to remove contaminants in municipal wastewater have been conducted by activated sludge process. But, the process have several probIems such as enormous site needed for construction of treatment facilities, unstable treatment due to limited ability to control load fluctuation, frequent sludge bulking and appearance of lots of surplus sludge. In this study, the experiments were performed through submerging biofilm of PEPP media in existing aeration tank with raw water from municipal wastewater treatment plant and then submerging PVDC and PEPP media, different from shape and chemical peculiarity in anoxic reactor. Throughout the experience, nutrient removal efficiency according to HRT, nitrogen phosphorous removal efficiency, behavior of nitrogen and dewatering efficiency have been compared and analysed with those of activated sludge process. As the results, BOD removal efficiency according to BOD volumetric load and F/M ratio was not found any differency in two processes, but was decreased below 90% as going along the condition of high load in activated sludge process. Kinetic coefficient was $K_{max}=1.162day^{-1}$, $K_s=53.77mg/L$, $Y=0.166mgVSS/mgBOD_{rem}$. and $K_d=0.019day^{-1}$. It was found that the removal efficiency, even though in aerobic condition, in biofilm process equipped anoxic reactor was higher than the one in activated sludge process within the range of 70~80%, and became better as HRT increased. Phosphorous removal efficiency was not found any differency in two processes. In biofilm process, treament efficiency even in conditions of high load was not decreased, because the biomass concentration could be maintained in high condition compared with activated sludge process. As HRT increased, suspended and attached biomass was increased and the other hand, F/M ratio was decreased as biomass' increasing. Biomass thickness was increased. from $10.43{\mu}m$ to $10.55{\mu}m$ as HRT increased and density of biomass within $40.79{\sim}41.16mg/cm^2$. The results also present that the dewatering efficiency of sludge generated in biofilm process was higher than in activated sludge process, and became better as HRT increased.
The possibility of reusing the paper sludge as a raw material of composition board mixed with cement was investigated. For the measurement of physical and mechanical properties, wood coment board and sludge combinend cement boards were fabricated with the three weigh ratios of paper sludge 10 % (SI), 20 % (S II) and 30 % (S III) to cement weight. For adding the cement hardning, $CaCl_2$ was also added to each mixed paste with the ratio of 1 %, 3 % and 5 % to cement weight, respectively. Crystal formation in paper sludge-, wood-cement composites was observed by scanning electron microscope. The results were summarized as follows. 1. Density and partial compressive strength of each specimens were relatively high in the order of sludge I, sludge II, Korean pine, Italian poplar and sludge III, sludge I, Korean pine, sludge II, Italian poplar and sludge III. 2. The mechanical properties of sludge-cement boards (S I and II) were higher than that of wood-cement boards prepared with Korean pine and Italian poplar. But the mechanical properties of wood-cement boards were improved by the adding of $CaCl_2$. 3. Water absorption and thickness swelling were increased with increase of sludge content to cement weight. 4. In SEM observation, sludge-cement composites showed sufficiently formed crystals but wood-cement composites showed poorly formed crystals.
Recycling method of red mud, byproduct from the aluminium manufacturing process, and paper sludge was investigated in order for them to be utilized as the adsorbent for the removal of volatile organic components(VOCs). Either high density polyethylene(HDPE) or low density polyethylene(LDPE) was added to facilitate the manufacture of adsorbents. The utilization of HDPE in the adsorbents increased the adsorption capacity due to the good physical properties, such as, BET and true density, compared with LDPE. BET values of the manufactured adsorbents were much lower than the commercial activated carbon ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}$). It may be due to the fact that the time for decomposition of the paper sludge was not enough during the manufacturing of adsorbents. But the specific adsorption capacity of the manufactured adsorbents (mole adsorbed per unit surface area) had much higher value than the commercial activated carbon (10-100). Therefore, it is important that BET of manufactured adsorbents needs to be increased to obtain the same adsorption capacity as the commercial activated carbon.
Artificial fine aggregates (denoted AFA) were fabricated using spent bleaching clay (denoted SBC) generated from processed vegetable oil and stone sludge (denoted SS) produced from crushed aggregate manufacturing materials for use as functional construction materials. Each raw material was crushed to particle size finer than $150{\mu}m$, and fine spherical pellets of approximately 1 ~ 4 mm in diameter were prepared by a pelletizing process. The physical properties of the AFA were measured with different types of sintering equipment. A new type of vertical furnace that sinters fine aggregates in a fluidized bed at high temperatures was designed and tested. AFA sintered in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.5g/cm^3$ and a water absorption of 16%. AFA sintered in the vertical furnace at $1125^{\circ}C$ showed a bulk density of $1.9g/cm^3$ and water absorption of 8.5%. The bulk density of the AFA sintered in the vertical furnace showed a bulk density 27% higher and water absorption 47% lower than those of AFA sintered in the rotary kiln.

In this research, a sewage sludge solubilization study using electrolysis was performed as a pre-treatment for anaerobic digestion efficiency improvement. SCOD potency increased as the treatment time and electric current density increased with sludge electrolysis treatment while SCOD, TN, and TP especially showed the highest increase of 7.4 times, 1.9 times, and 1.3 times respectively at the 60 minute point of treatment. Solubilization was high at the strong acidic and alkaline status for the sewage sludge electrolysis treatment results along early stage pH, and especially, a high solubilization percentage of 32.9% was seen at pH 12. The above result shows that there was an increase of organic matter able to be used by microorganisms from sludge floc and the destruction of EPS structure due to direct and indirect oxidation following electrolysis.
