  • The high-speed steel (shorten as HSS) consists of Fe and several kinds of transition metal carbides. The cutting tools or wear-resistant materials made from HSS experience relatively high thermal shock because a coolant such as water or oil is flowed over the surface of heated HSS. The purpose of this research is to increase the hardness, strength, fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of HSS. A possible strategy is to incorporate a hard ceramic material with high strength in HSS matrix. This paper describes the processing, microstructure and mechanical properties of the oriented unidirectional mullite fiber/HSS composite. The unidirectional mullite fibers of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter were dispersed by the ultrasonic irradiation of 38 kHz in an ethylenglycol suspension containing HSS powder of 11${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ median size. The dried green composites with 4-68 vol% fibers were hot-pressed for 2h at 100$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere under a pressure of 39 MPa. The higher density was achieved in the composite with a lower content of fibers. The oriented unidirectional fibers were well dispersed in the HSS matrix. The average distance between the center of fibers in the cross section was close to the value calculated from the fiber fraction. No reaction occurred at the interfaces between HSS and mullite fibers in the composites. The composite with 13.6 vol% fibers showed 100 MPa of four point flexural strength at room temperature. The thermal expansion of composite with heating was influenced by the orientation of mullite fibers.

  • This research studies thermo-elastic behavior of rotating micro discs that are employed in various micro devices such as micro gas turbines. It is assumed that material is functionally graded with a variable profile thickness, density, shear modulus and thermal expansion in terms of radius of micro disc and as a power law function. Boundary condition is considered fixed-free with uniform thermal loading and elastic field is symmetric. Using incompressible material's constitutive equation, we extract governing differential equation of four orders; to solution this equation, we utilize general differential quadrature (GDQ) method and the results are schematically pictured. The obtained result in a particular case is compared with another work and coincidence of results is shown. We will find out that surface effect tends to split micro disc's area to compressive and tensile while nonlocal parameter tries to converge different behaviors with each other; this convergence feature make FGIMs capable to resist in high temperature and so in terms of thermo-elastic behavior we can suggest, using FGIMs in micro devices such as micro turbines (under glass transition temperature).

  • With the increasing number of underground projects, the problem of rock-water coupling catastrophe has increasingly become the focus of safety. Grouting reinforcement is gradually applied in subway, tunnel, bridge reinforcement, coal mine floor and other construction projects. At present, cement-based grouting materials are easy to shrink and have low strength after solidification. In order to overcome the special problems of high water pressure and high in-situ stress in deep part and improve the reinforcement effect. In view of the mining conditions of deep surrounding rock, a new type of cement-based reinforcement material was developed. We analyses the principle and main indexes of floor strengthening, and tests and optimizes the indexes and proportions of the two materials through laboratory tests. Then, observes and compares the microstructures of the optimized floor strengthening materials with those of the traditional strengthening materials through scanning electron microscopy. The test results show that 42.5 Portland cement-based grouting reinforcement material has the advantages of slight expansion, anti-dry-shrinkage, high compressive strength and high density when the water-cement ratio is 0.4, the content of bentonite is 4%, and the content of Nano Silica is 2.5%. The reinforcement effect is better than other traditional grouting reinforcement materials.

  • This study assessed the feasibility of a Ti3AlC2 MAX phase as an Al-source for the formation of a mullite bond in the fabrication of porous SiC tubes with high strength. The as-received Ti3AlC2 was partially oxidized at 1200℃ for 30 min before using to minimize the abrupt volume expansion caused by oxidation during sintering. Thermal treatment at 1100-1400℃ for 3 h in air led to the formation of Al2O3 by the decomposition of Ti3AlC2, which reacted further with oxidation-derived SiO2 on the SiC surface to form a mullite phase. The fabricated porous SiC tubes with a relative density of 48 - 62 % exhibited mechanical strengths of 80 - 200 MPa, which were much higher than those with the Al2O3 filler material. The high mechanical strength of the Ti3AlC2-added porous SiC was explained by the rigid mullite neck formation along with the retained Ti3AlC2 with good mechanical properties.

  • In the $(La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2})(Cr_{0.9}Co_{0.1})O_3$ (LCCC), which has been using as interconnector materials in SOFC, Al ions were substituted for Co because ionic radius of Al is similar to that of Co. Because of the almost identical ionic radius of Al and Co, the substitution was not thought to be affect the tolerance factor of LCCC, and the densification behavior, high temperature electrical conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient were examined as a function of Al concentration. In the cases of the x= 0 and x= 0.02 in $(La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2})(Cr_{0.9}Co_{0.1-x}Al_x)O_3$ (x= 0~0.1), the samples showed the relative densities above ${\geq}95%$ when those were sintered at ${\geq}1,350^{\circ}C$. In the case of the $x{\geq}0.06$ the sintered density deteriorated greatly at lower sintering temperatures. High temperature electrical conductivity of the samples decreased as the content of Al increased. Since the valence state of Al ion is unchangeable, while Cr or Co ions contribute to the electrical conduction by changing those valence states, Al substitution resulted in the decreased electrical conductivity. Al doping of LCCC was an effective way of decreasing the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC).

  • The use of flip-chip technology has many advantages over other approaches for high-density electronic packaging. ACF (anisotropic conductive film) is one of the major flip-chip technologies, which has short chip-to-chip interconnection length, high productivity, and miniaturization of package. In this study, thermal fatigue lift of ACF bonding flip-chip package has been predicted. Elastic and thermal properties of ACF were measured by using DMA and TMA. Temperature dependent nonlinear hi-thermal analysis was conducted and the result was compared with Moire interferometer experiment. Calculated displacement field was well matched with experimental result. Thermal fatigue analysis was also conducted. The maximum shear strain occurs at the outmost located bump. Shear stress-strain curve was obtained to calculate fatigue life. Fatigue model for electronic adhesives was used to predict thermal fatigue life of ACF bonding flip-chip packaging. DOE (Design of Experiment) technique was used to find important design factors. The results show that PCB CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) and elastic modulus of ACF material are important material parameters. And as important design parameters, chip width, bump pitch and bump width were chose. 2$^{nd}$ DOE was conducted to obtain RSM equation far the choose 3 design parameter. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) for the calculated RSM equation is 0.99934. Optimum design is conducted using the RSM equation. MMFD (Modified Method for feasible Direction) algorithm is used to optimum design. The optimum value for chip width, bump pitch and bump width were 7.87mm, 430$\mu$m, and 78$\mu$m, respectively. Approximately, 1400 cycles have been expected under optimum conditions. Reliability analysis was conducted to find out guideline for control range of design parameter. Sigma value was calculated with changing standard deviation of design variable. To acquire 6 sigma level thermal fatigue reliability, the Std. Deviation of design parameter should be controlled within 3% of average value.

  • Cobalt-free $La_xSr_{4-x}Fe_6O_{13}$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}2$) oxide have been synthesized and investigated as a potential cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). $Sr_4Fe_6O_{13}$ consists of alternating perovskite layers ($Sr_4Fe_2O_8$) containing iron cations in octahedral oxygen coordination and $Fe_4O_5$ layers where iron cations have 5-fold coordination of two types-square pyramids and trigonal bipyramids. Our preliminary electrochemical testes of pristine $Sr_4Fe_6O_{13}$ show a rather high area specific resistance ($0.47{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$) for ~20 ${\mu}m$ thick layers with CGO electrolyte. The electrochemical performances are improved by La addition up to x=1 ($La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$, $0.06{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$). In addition, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) values of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$ specimen demonstrated $15.1{\times}10^{-6}\;^{\circ}C^{-1}$ in the range of 25-900$^{\circ}C$, which provides good thermal expansion compatibility with the CGO electrolyte. An electrolyte supported (300-${\mu}m$-thick) single-cell configuration of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$/CGO/Ni-CGO delivered a maximum power density of 584 $mWcm^{-2}$ at $700^{\circ}C$. In addition, an anode supported single cell by YSZ electrolyte (10-${\mu}m$-thick) with a porous CGO interlayer between the cathode and the electrolyte to avoid undesired interfacial reactions exhibited 1,517 $mWcm^{-2}$ at $800^{\circ}C$. The unique composition of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$ with low thermal expansion coefficient and higher electrochemical properties could be a good cathode candidate for intermediate temperature SOFCs with CGO and YSZ electrolyte.

  • Transition metal chalcogenides have garnered significant attention as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, their practical application is impeded by their limited lifespan resulting from substantial volume expansion during cycling and their low electrical conductivity. To tackle these issues, this study devised a solution by synthesizing a nanostructured anode material composed of porous CNT (carbon nanotube) spheres and (Ni,Co)Se2 nanocrystals. By employing spray pyrolysis and subsequent heat treatments, a porous-structured (Ni,Co)Se2-CNT composite microsphere was successfully synthesized, and its electrochemical properties as an anode for sodium-ion batteries were evaluated. The synthesized (Ni,Co)Se2-CNT microsphere possesses a porous structure due to the nanovoids that formed as a result of the decomposition of the polystyrene (PS) nanobeads during spray pyrolysis. This porous structure can effectively accommodate the volume expansion that occurs during repeated cycling, while the CNT scaffold enhances electronic conductivity. Consequently, the (Ni,Co)Se2-CNT anode exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 698 mA h g-1 and maintained a high discharge capacity of 400 mA h g-1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 A g-1.

  • A series of foamed plastic sheets containing biomass (as HMR container) were developed via different foaming process temperatures, and their density, porosity, WVTR, and pore morphology were evaluated. Thermal stability of samples during re-heating the food in oven, change in morphology, density, porosity, and WVTR were investigated using a simulated thermal shock process according to MIL-STD-883E assay. As such, the pore size of samples was generally increased with increasing temperature of the foaming process. It can be explained that as foaming temperature increased, the viscosity of molten resins and the repulsive force against pore expansion decreased. In addition, an increase in the thermal shock cycle reduced the pore size and WVTR, while density increased because high temperature treatment that softened the sheet matrix was followed by a low temperature incubation, which contracted the matrix, thereby changing the physical and morphological properties of samples. However, an insignificant change in density was observed and WVTR tended to be decreased, indicating that as-prepared foamed plastic sheets could be used as a high thermal stable container for HMR application. Therefore, it found that the properties of newly developed HMR containers containing biomass were dependent on the foaming process temperature. Moreover, to better understanding of these newly developed containers, further investigations dealing with foaming process temperature based on various food items and cooking conditions are needed.

  • According to the rapid growth of electric vehicle (EVs) and E-mobility market, Li-ion batteries are one of the most progressive technologies. The demand of LIBs with high energy capacity, rate performance and fast charging is continuously increasing, hence high-performance LIBs should be developed. Si is considered as the most promising anode material to improve energy density because of its high theoretical capacity. However, Si suffers large volume chances during the charging and discharge process, leading to the fast degradation of cycle performance. Therefore, polymeric binders play a key role in electrochemical performance of Si anode by efficiently enduring the Si expansion and maintaining the binding networks in electrode. In this review, we explain the role of polymeric binders in electrode and introduce the anode binders with enhanced mechanical and chemical properties which can improve electrochemical performances of Si-based anode.
