  • The kill probability of a missile depends on guidance error, warhead performance, and etc. In this paper, we analyzed the kill probability of anti-tank missile in a new approach. Under the condition that the missile hit the target, we studied the effect of angle of attack and impact angle. High impact angle increase the probability that the missile hits the upper armour which is relatively weaker, while high angle of attack at the impact instant decreases the effectiveness of the jet induced by the warhead. We proposed a way to increase the capability of penetration by analyzing the interrelation between impact angle and angle of attack.

  • Flow around a guided missile in high maneuver, i.e. at a high angle of attack, shows complex phenomena. It is well known that even in geometrically symmetric conditions the flow around a missile at high angles of attack can generate unexpected large side forces and yaw moments due to asymmetric vortices. In this paper, a CFD code (FLUENT) based on the Navier-Stokes equations was used for the numerical analysis to find a suitable numerical mechanism for generation of asymmetric vortices. It is shown that a numerical technique of applying different surface roughness to a specific area of the missile nose surface gives the best fit in comparison with the experimental results. In addition, a numerical investigation of variations of side forces and pressure distributions with angle of attack and roll angle was conducted for the purpose of identifying the source of vortex asymmetries.

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM) are used to perform aerodynamics analysis and structure analysis. For the fluid-structure interaction analysis, each technology should be considered as well. The process of aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis can be applied to various integrated analyses from many research fields. In this study, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analysis is performed for the missile at high angle of attack condition through the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the Finite Element Method (FEM). For this purpose, the aerodynamics-structure coupled analyses procedure for the missile are established. The results of the integrated analysis are compared with rigid geometry of the missile and the effect of the deformation will be addressed.

  • In this work, we explore the feasibility of roll-pitch-yaw integrated autopilots for high angle-of-attack missiles. An investigation of the aerodynamic characteristics of a surface-to-air missile is presented, which reveals the strong effects of cross coupling between the longitudinal and lateral dynamics. Robust control techniques based on $H_{\infty}$ synthesis are employed to design roll-pitch-yaw integrated autopilots. The performance of the proposed roll-pitch-yaw integrated controller is tested in high-fidelity nonlinear five-degree-of-freedom simulations accounting for kinematic cross-coupling effects between the lateral and longitudinal channels. Against nonlinearity and cross-coupling effects of the missile dynamics, the integrated controller demonstrates superior performance when compared with the controller designed in a decoupled manner.

  • Missile and fighter aircraft have been challenged by low restoring nose-down pitching moment at high angle of attach. The consequence of weak nose-down pitching moment can be resulting in a deep stall condition. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance and safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed at high angle of attack up to 50 degrees around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of $10^5$. The lift, drag, pressure, entropy distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the angle of attack. The results of average lift coefficients are compared with other results according to the angle of attack. From a certain high angle of attack, the strong vortex formed by the leading edge are flowing downstream as like Karman vortex around a circular cylinder. The primary and secondary oscillating frequencies are analyzed by the effects of these unsteady aerodynamic characteristics.

Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution on the airfoil surface, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

  • This paper deals with missile autopilot design for agile turn phase in air-to-air engagement scenarios. To attain a fast response, angle-of-attack (AOA) is adopted for an autopilot command structure. Since a high operational AOA is generally required during the agile turn phase, dealing with the aerodynamic uncertainties can be a challenge for autopilot design. As a remedy, a new controller design method based on robust nonlinear control methodology such as time delay control is proposed in this paper. Nonlinear observer is also proposed to estimate the AOA in the presence of the model uncertainties. The performance of the proposed controller with variation of the aerodynamic coefficients is investigated through numerical simulations.

  • We report on the design of a three-axis missile autopilot using multi-objective control synthesis via linear matrix inequality techniques. This autopilot design guarantees $H_2/H_{\infty}$ performance criteria for a set of finite linear models. These models are linearized at different aerodynamic roll angle conditions over the flight envelope to capture uncertainties that occur in the high-angle-of-attack regime. Simulation results are presented for different aerodynamic roll angle variations and show that the performance of the controller is very satisfactory.

  • Asymmetric force and vibration caused by separation flow at high angle of attack affect the stability of supersonic missile. As a preliminary study we verified the effect of turbulence model through general 3-D slender body for the supersonic flow at high angle of attack. ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ Wilcox model, ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ Wilcox-Durbin+ model, ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ shear-stress transport model, and Spalart-Allmaras one equation model are used. Grid sensitivity test was performed with three different grid system. results show that all models are in good agreement with the experimental data.

  • In the case of an antiaircraft missile, high angle of attack flight capability is required to get the agile maneuverability in a supersonic flow. Even through a symmetric slender body does not have side slip, asymmetric vortex is generated at high angle of attack conditions. This asymmetric vortex produces unnecessary side force and yawing moment; hence, these effects deteriorate directional stability. In this study, the numerical analysis of asymmetric vortices around the slender body was conducted at high angle of attack supersonic flow. In order to simulate the vortices, a bump is installed on the nose of the slender body. As a result of the numerical analysis, the asymmetric vortices around the slender body could be simulated.
