  • In this study, we theoretically investigate the thermal performances of heat pipes that have different nano-fluid properties. Two different types of nano-particles have been used: $Al_2O_3$ and CuO. The thermal performances of the heat pipes are observed for varying nano-particle aggregations and volume fractions. Both the viscosity and the conductivity increase as the volume fraction and the aggregation increase, respectively. Increasing the volume fraction helps increase the capillary limit in the well-dispersed condition. Whereas, the capillary limit is decreased under the aggregate condition, when the volume fraction increases. The dependence of the heat pipe thermal resistance on the volume fraction, aggregation, and conductivity of the nano-particles is analyzed. The maximum thermal transfer of the heat pipe is highly dependent on the volume fraction because of the high permeability of the heat pipe. For the proposed heat pipe, the optimum volume fraction of the nano-particle can be seen through 3D graphics.

  • The physical properties of freeze-dried Aloe vera gel powders were examined according to the influence of the concentration degrees of the gel solutions as raw materials during freeze-drying. As a pre-treatment prior to freeze-drying, the gel solutions were vacuum-concentrated at three concentration levels (g water/g solids): high (H), 76; medium (M), 119; and low (L), 159. The water contents of the three powder samples were almost the same. For their viscosity measurements, non-Newtonian fluid behavior with shear thinning was observed in samples H and M, whereas Newtonian liquid behavior was found in sample L. In electrical conductivity measurements, sample H showed the highest conductivity upon dissolving the powder in water. For their water sorption isotherms, sample H was analyzed to have the least amount of bound water. Finally, it was determined that the degree of concentration caused only slight differences in the physical properties of freeze-dried Aloe gel powders.

  • In this paper a sharp-edged type damping orifice for an aircraft door damper were designed, where the dynamic viscosity of working fluid were assumed to change up to 400cSt. The discharge coefficient of the damping orifice were investigated by CFD analyses and experiments. In particular, the influences of orifice diameter, edge angle, flow direction and the Reynolds number were taken into consideration. Based on this, it has been deduced how high Coulomb friction forces of damper seals is to be allowed to meet the performance criterion with respect to the orifice size.

  • Temperature change affects consolidation behavior of soft clays. The increase of temperature in soft clays induces the increase of pore water pressure. The dissipation of the excess pore water pressure decreases volume and void ratio. Also, the consolidation rate is accelerated by high temperature which induces the decrease of viscosity of pore fluid. The effects of temperature on the consolidation behavior such as consolidation settlement, consolidation time, and pore water pressure were investigated in this study. A numerical analysis of hydro-mechanical (HM) and thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior was performed. The combination of heat injection and sand drain for consolidating the soft ground, with varying temperature (40 and $60^{\circ}C$) and sand drain diameter (40, 60, and 80 mm), was considered. The results show that the temperature inside soil specimen increases with the increase of the temperature of heating source and the diameter of sand drain. Moreover, the heat injection increases the excess pore water pressure and, accordingly, induces additional settlement in overconsolidated (OC) state and reduces the consolidation time in normally consolidated (NC) state.

  • In this study, we perform a 3D CFD conjugate analysis according to the shape of the foil ramp of the air foil thrust bearing, analyze the flow characteristics inside the bearing, and compare the results corresponding to the two shapes. Air has a lower viscosity than lubricating oil. Therefore, the thrust runner of the bearing must rotate at high speed to support the load. The gap between thrust runner and foil is significantly smaller than that of the oil bearing. Hence, it is crucial to analyze the complex flow characteristics inside the bearing to predict the complex flow inside the bearing and performance of the bearing. In addition, flow characteristics may appear differently depending on the ramp shape of the bearing foil, which may affect bearing performance. In this study, we numerically analyze the main flow path of air flowing into the bearing and the secondary flow path used for cooling the bearing using the commercial CFD software ANSYS CFX and compare the flow characteristics for straight and curved foil ramp shapes. Notably, there is a difference in the speed of the flowing air according to the shape of the ramp, which affects the bearing performance.

  • The objective of this study was to derive a cementitious material for three-dimensional (3D) concrete printing that fulfills key performance functions, extrudability, buildability and bondability for 3D concrete printing. For this purpose, the rheological properties shown by different compositions of cement paste, the most fundamental component of concrete, were assessed, and the correlation between the rheological properties and key performance functions was analyzed. The results of the experiments indicated that the overall properties of a binder have a greater influence on the yield stress than the plastic viscosity. When the performance of a cementitious material for 3D printing was considered in relation with the properties of a binder, a mixture with FA or SF was thought to be more appropriate; however, a mixture containing GGBS was found to be inappropriate as it failed to meet the required function especially, buildability and extrudability. For a simple quantitative evaluation, the correlation between the rheological parameters of cementitious materials and simplified flow performance test results-time taken to reach T-150 and the number of hits required to reach T-150-in consideration of the flow of cementitious materials was compared. The result of the analysis showed a high reliability for the correlation between the rheological parameters and the time taken to reach T-150, but a low reliability for the number of hits needed for the fluid to reach T-150. In conclusion, among several performance functions, extrudability and buildability were mainly assessed based on the results obtained from various formulations from a rheological perspective, and the suitable formulations of composite materials for 3D printing was derived.

  • In order to efficiently control the heat generation of electronic devices, many research has been conducted on thermally conductive composite materials. In this study, milled carbon fiber was dispersed in four solvent to investigate the relationship of carbon fiber alignment according to dispersion by solvents, and carbon fiberreinforced composite material(CFRP) was manufactured using vacuum filtration. To evaluate the arrangement of CFRP the arrangement of the prepared specimen was observed under an optical microscope, and thermal conductivity was measured by Laser Flash Analysis. The Through-plane thermal conductivity of CFRP using NMP and Ethanol was 10.79 W/mK and 10.57 W/mK respectively, which were improved by 218% and 209% compared to the In-plane thermal conductivity. The high viscosity of the solvent greatly affects the shear of the fluid, and it seemed to determine the alignment of the filler.

  • Two computational intelligence techniques namely artificial neural networks (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) are employed to model the permeate flux based on seven input variables including time, transmembrane pressure, rotating velocity, the pore diameter of the membrane, dynamic viscosity, concentration and density of the feed fluid. The best-fit model was selected through the trial-error method and the two statistical parameters including the coefficient of determination (R2) and the average absolute relative deviation (AARD) between the experimental and predicted data. The obtained results reveal that the optimized ANN model can predict the permeate flux with R2 = 0.999 and AARD% = 2.245 versus the SVM model with R2 = 0.996 and AARD% = 4.09. Thus, the ANN model is found to predict the permeate flux with high accuracy in comparison to the SVM approach.

  • Centrifugal pump is a facility that transfers energy to fluid through centrifugal force, which is usually generated by rotating the impeller at high speed, and is a major process facility used in many LNG production bases such as vaporization seawater pump, industrial water and fire extinguishing pump using seawater. to be. Currently, pumps in LNG plant sites are subject to operating conditions that vary depending on the amount of supply desired by the customer for a long period of time. Pumps in particular occupy a large part of the consumption strategy at the plant site, and if the optimum operation condition is not available, it can incur enormous energy loss in long term plant operation. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to identify the performance deterioration factor through the flow analysis and the result analysis according to the fluctuations of the pump's operating conditions and to determine the optimal operation efficiency. In order to evaluate operation efficiency through experimental techniques, considerable time and cost are incurred, such as on-site operating conditions and manufacturing of experimental equipment. If the performance of the pump is not suitable for the site, and the performance of the pump needs to be reduced, a method of changing the rotation speed or using a special liquid containing high viscosity or solids is used. Especially, in order to prevent disruptions in the operation of LNG production bases, a technology is required to satisfy the required performance conditions by processing the existing impeller of the pump within a short time. Therefore, in this study, the rotation difference of the pump was applied to the ANSYS CFX program by applying the modified 3D modeling shape. In addition, the results obtained from the flow analysis and the curve fitting toolbox of the MATLAB program were analyzed numerically to verify the outer diameter correction theory.

  • This study presents the carburization process for recycling sludge, which was formed during silicon wafer machining. The sludge used in the carburization process is a mixture of silicon and silicon carbide (SiC) with iron as an impurity, which originates from the machine. Additionally, the sludge contains cutting oil, a fluid with high viscosity. Therefore, the sludge was dried before carburization to remove organic matter. The dried sludge was washed by acid cleaning to remove the iron impurity and subsequently carburized by heat treatment under vacuum to form the SiC powder. The ratio of silicon to SiC in the sludge was varied depending on the sources and thus carbon content was adjusted by the ratio. With increasing SiC content, the carbon content required for SiC formation increased. It was demonstrated that substoichiometric SiCx (x<1) was easily formed when the carbon content was insufficient. Therefore, excess carbon is required to obtain a pure SiC phase. Moreover, size reduction by high-energy milling had a beneficial effect on the suppression of SiCx, forming the pure SiC phase.
