  • The railway signalling system for safe train operation regulates the train speed to ensure the safety distance between consecutive trains by using wayside facilities such as track circuits and interlocking systems. In addition, this signalling system controls the trackside equipment such as a railway point along the train line. This ground-equipment-based train control systems require high CAPEX and OPEX. To deal with these problems, the train control system using the on-board controller has been recently proposed and its related technologies have been widely studied. The on-board-controller-based train control system is that the on-board controller can directly control the trackside equipment on the train line. In addition, if this system is used, the wayside facilities can be simplified, and as a result, the efficient and cost-effective train control system can be realized. To this end, we have developed the prototypes of the on-board controller and wayside object control units which control the point and crossing gate and performed the integrated operation simulation in a testbed. In this paper, before the field test of the on-board-controller-based train control system, we perform the preliminary field trial including the installation test, wireless access test, interface test with other on-board devices, and normal operation test.

  • This paper is a follow-up to previous papers entitled, "Development of Tunnel-Environment Monitoring System and Its Installation" I [1] and II [2]. The target tunnel of these studies is the Solan Tunnel, which is a loop-type, single-track, 16.7-km-long tunnel located in mountainous terrain and passing through the Baekdudaegan mountain range. It is an ordinary railway tunnel designed for both freight and passenger trains. We analyzed the environmental conditions of the tunnel using temperature and humidity data recorded over approximately one year. The data were recorded using the Tunnel Rough Environment Measuring System (TREMS), which measures environmental data in subway and high-speed train tunnels and is installed in three locations inside the tunnel. Previous studies analyzed environmental conditions inside tunnels located in or near a city, whereas the tunnel in this study is located in a mountainous area. The tunnel conditions were compared with those measured outside the tunnel for each month. Hourly changes during summer and winter periods were also analyzed, and the environmental conditions at different locations inside the tunnel were compared. The results are widely applicable in studies on the thermal environment and air quality of tunnels, as well as for computer analysis of tunnel airflow such as tunnel ventilation and fire simulations.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the use and inconvenience of informatization devices according to the disability of the elderly. A total 10,097 data from the elderly survey were used to analyze the differences in the possession and use of information devices, usage capabilities, and injustice according to disability. Descriptive analysis was conducted to find out general characteristics and disability-related characteristics. chi-square tests were conducted to find out the difference in informatization and communication device usage ability and information device usage inconvenience according to disability. The p-value was set at 0.001. As a result of the study, the elderly with disabilities in Korea had lower smartphones and tablet PCs than the non-disabled elderly. In terms of daily inconvenience, the elderly with disabilities often responded that they had no experience or did not know about the inconvenience of online reservations for trains/high-speed buses/intercity buses, ordering kiosks at restaurants, using ATMs, or reducing bank stores. Taken together, the ability of the elderly with disabilities in Korea to possess and use informatization devices is very low and they feel more inconvenience than the non-disabled elderly. It is necessary to improve the ability to possess and use informatization devices for the elderly with disabilities in the rapidly progressing aging of the disabled and the informatization of our society.
