  • CBTC(Communication-Based Train Control) system which is based on wireless communication can provide high density operation of the train using location tracking between ground and onboard train. It can also reduces maintenance expense because it does not require the ground equipment for tracking circuit and signal flag and so on. Recently, research and interest have been done on CBTC system. The high-speed trains up to 300km/h experience multi-path fading channel which bring about the performance degradation of wireless CBTC system. In this paper, we consider MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) antenna-based CBTC system for trains with Alamoutip-type space-time diversity transmission for reliable communication. Also we model a channel considering practical environment and evaluate performance improvement of proposed CBTC system.

  • Train radio system has been constructed in the second stage of Kyung-bu high speed railway adopting TETRA(Terrestial trunk radio) standard at 851MHz frequency band. The base stations of the train radio system should be located along railway track to ensure seamless communication between train and wayside taking the path loss of train radio propagation into consideration. This paper provides a quantitative analysis of the path loss characteristics based on the measurement results of the train radio propagation along the high speed railway. The free space propagation model and Okumura-Hata model are generally used for base station design, but they predicted 10dB lower or 20dB higher than the measured path loss. Linear regression of the field measured data by applying the log-distance model shows path loss exponent is in the 2.8-3.2 range, which can be used to predict the path loss of the train radio propagation.

  • In this paper, we studied the environmental requirements for the railway transponder system. The transponder system is comprised of a reader installed beneath the train, a tag installed on the track, and a portable programmer. Among them, the transponder tag should be designed to withstand harsh environments, such as wide operating temperature range, mechanical shock and vibration, etc. To validate stable and reliable service under railway conditions, we carried out environmental test for transponder tag. We then installed the tags on the Honam high-speed test line.

  • It is important to localize trains precisely for the purpose of controlling them and there have been many studies designed to accomplish this without the need for wayside systems. Since trains run on fixed railway lines, it is possible to search in one direction to localize them. Moreover, it is also possible to know the shape of the line in advance. In the case of high speed trains, their speed and, therefore, their Doppler frequency is relatively high and the railway line is either linear or circular with a large radius. In this study, we utilize these features and propose a train localization method using the Doppler frequency of the signals transmitted from two points (base stations). We derive localization equations for a linear line, circular line, and mixed line (linear plus circular) respectively. Though Doppler radars are usually used to measure speed, the proposed method obtains the location information and the speed successively using the ratio of the doppler frequencies of two signals without knowing the location information or the speed. Computer simulations are performed to show the variation of the estimation error according to the train's location and the measurement error level. The conditions required to obtain the target error level and the increase in the estimation error according to the measurement error are compared between the proposed and conventional methods. The results show the superior performance and robustness of the proposed method.

  • Real time control system such as in factory automation fields, defense field, aerospace, railway industries, financial trading and so forth, includes multiple computers on multiple nodes, and share data to process various actions and functions. This is similar to multitasking in a multiprocessor computer system. The task processing efficiency of such system is proportionally increased by process speed of each process computer. And also it is greatly influenced by communication latencies of each node. To provide proper operation of such real time system, a network that can guarantee deterministic exchange of certain amount of data within a limited time is required. Such network is called as a real time network. As for modern distributed control system, the timeliness of data exchange gives important factor for the dynamics of entire control system. In a real time network system, exchanged data are determined by off-line design process to provide the timeliness of data. In other word, designer of network makes up a network data table that describes the specification of data exchanged between control equipments. And by this off-line design result, the network data are exchanged by predetermined schedule. First, this paper explains international standard real time network TCN (Train Communication Network) applied to the KHST (Korean High Speed Train) project. And then it explains the computer program developed for design tool of network data table of TCN.

  • An operating information and fault recode of train is very important information for safety driving and maintenance. And these information is increased and need high speed as the number of trains is increased. Wireless LAN or CDMA network is efficient to report more complicated and various information from vehicle to server in control center. Existing wireless transmission system has weakness due to transmission system is separated with TDCS and standalone. At first, standalone system needs space to be installed and cost is increased. And data transmission capacity and speed is limited by complicated structure that transmission system receive data thru serial communication like RS232 and then data transmission system send data to server in control center. This article is study to develop embedded & wireless fault code transmission device to be installed in TDCS to overcome weakness of space and to have more cost effective and simple structure. It is adapted 802.11b/g WiFi for wireless communication and OS is used embedded Linux that can easily implement wireless communication environment and ensure TCP/IP communication’s security. We also implement simple server to test wireless communication between embedded & wireless fault code transmission device and server in control center.

  • In recent years, with the rapid development of large and medium-sized urban rail transit in China, the total operating mileage of high-speed railway and the total number of EMUs(Electric Multiple Units) are rising. The system complexity of high-speed EMU is constantly increasing, which puts forward higher requirements for the safety of equipment and the efficiency of maintenance. At present, the maintenance mode of high-speed EMU in China still adopts the post maintenance method based on planned maintenance and fault maintenance, which leads to insufficient or excessive maintenance, reduces the efficiency of equipment fault handling, and increases the maintenance cost. Based on the intelligent operation and maintenance technology of PHM(prognostics and health management). This thesis builds an integrated PHM platform of "vehicle system-communication system-ground system" by integrating multi-source heterogeneous data of different scenarios of high-speed EMU, and combines the equipment fault mechanism with artificial intelligence algorithms to build a fault prediction model for traction motors of high-speed EMU.Reliable fault prediction and accurate maintenance shall be carried out in advance to ensure safe and efficient operation of high-speed EMU.

  • In this paper we present the specification development for the localization of interlockings which control routes within a HSR station yard. For the electronic interlockings in Korea introduced from France in the 1990s, it has a complicated hardware configuration and communication protocols in order to secure safety. Now 30 years later, in case of the application of the up-to-date IT technology, it is expected to achieve equal or greater safety and save maintenance costs. Additionally, we develop the specification so as to utilize the stable domestic electronic interlocking technology for general railways, beyond the simple maintenance for the performance maintenance of foreign devices, to high-speed railways. Therefore, we perform a study for the localization of the HSR electronic interlockings by comparing and analyzing interlocking logic units between conventional HSR and general railways.

  • Recently, a high speed rail consists of many train coaches and power cars. For keeping the reliable train communication system with train coaches and power cars, train uses the OSI model(Open Systems Interconnection Basic Reference Model) and KTX(Korea Train eXpress) only uses the Physical to Transport layer of OSI model. This paper describes the analysis of CLNP(Connectionless Network Protocol) and ES-IS(End System to Intermediate System) protocols used in KTX for the network layer. CLNP is used to send data to other system and ES-IS protocol is used to route and send information between end systems and intermediate systems. Also this paper presents the protocol parsing program and implementation of Network layer.
