  • This paper presents a classical speed controller (CSC) for vector controlled induction motors. The controller explores the use of a Fuzzy Logic controller in a classical form. The controller combines the advantages of the classical controller and the properties of intelligent controllers. The Fuzzy Logic controller idea is used to obtain the CSC output equation, whereby the CSC equation is based on the speed error and its change. The CSC parameters are calculated based on the motor mechanical equation and a predefined system performance. Once the CSC parameters are obtained, the defined speed performance can be achieved at all operating conditions. The application of the CSC to control the speed of a vector controlled induction motor is presented. Different induction motor ratings are used. Simulation results in all possible olperating conditions are presented. Results show that the CSC behaves as an expert controller to provide the predefined speed performance in all possible operating conditions. Based on the results obtained in this paper, the CSC is expected to become the ultimate solution for high-performance drives of the next generation.

  • An experiment is conducted for measuring the performance of an air tool, which is operated at 100,000 RPM in an unloaded state with very low torque. A 551 kPa in gauge pressure is supply to the inlet of an air tool. An experimental apparatus is developed as a friction type dynamometer. Inlet total pressure, air flow rate, rotational speed and operating force are measured simultaneously. Torque, output power and specific output power are obtained with different rotational speeds. Those are compared with the experimental results which were obtained by a commercial dynamometer. However, no commercial dynamometers are available for measuring the torque above 30,000 RPM. In order to reduce the rotational speed, a reduction gear is applied between the air tool and the commercial dynamometer. Torque and power obtained by the commercial dynamometer show $55\%$ lower than those obtained by the developed friction type dynamometer, because the mass is added to the rotor of air tool for the braking system of the commercial dynamometer and power loss is generated by the reduction gear. From the compared results, the friction type dynamometer should be applied for measuring the performance of the air tool operating at low torque and high RPM.

  • The multi-level inverters are highly efficient for high-power and medium-voltage AC driving applications, such as high-speed railway systems and renewable energy resources, because such inverters generate lower total harmonic distortion (THD) and electromagnetic interface (EMI). Lower switching stress occurs on switching devices compared with conventional two-level inverters. Depending on the multi-level inverter topology, the required components and number of switching devices are different, influencing the overall efficiency. Comparative studies of multi-level inverters based on loss analysis and output characteristic are necessary to apply multi-level inverters in high-power AC conversion systems. This paper proposes a theoretical loss analysis method based on piecewise linearization of characteristic curves of power semiconductor devices as well as loss analysis and output performance comparison of five-level neutral-point clamped, flying capacitor inverters, and high-level cascaded H-bridge multi-level inverters.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • This paper presents a cycloconverter with an LC resonant circuit for an induction motor drive. The cycloconverter can keep input displacement factor at 1.0 by independently controlling real and reactive power under any load conditions. Furthermore it can keep power factor at about 1.0 since input and output current waveforms are nearly sinusoidal. Since it uses high frequency resonant circuit for commutation source, it can produce an output voltage of hundreds of hertz. Since it is also possible to make a system of high capacity using the cycloconverter, it is appropriate to drive motors with high speed and high capacity as well as general purpose motors, In this paper, we describe the operating principles of the cycloconverter and power control algorithms, and analyze its waveforms and present its characteristics. Expermental results are shown for the volts/hertz control of the induction motor and the validity of the proposed model is verified.

  • Ship system can be divided into four sub-systems: hull, propeller, main engine and operation system which severely affect the characteristics of a ship. In determining ship speed in waves, two factors are considered the involuntary speed loss due to added resistance caused by wind and waves, and the voluntary speed loss by command of operation system to prevent severe ship motions. In this paper, the main function of four sub-system is analyzed for input/output relations and propulsive coefficient and a useful method to predict involuntary speed loss of a ship is presented. Two calculated examples for a high speed container ship and a passenger ship with single screw and diesel engine are given.

  • A fossil power plant can be modeled by a lot of algebraic equations and differential equations. When we simulate a large, complicated fossil power plant by a computer such as workstation or PC, it takes much time until overall equations are completely calculated. Therefore, new processing systems which have high computing speed is ultimately needed for real-time or high-speed(faster than real-time) simulators. This paper presents an enhanced strategy in which high computing power can be provided by parallel processing of DSP processors with communication links. DSP system is designed for general purpose. Parallel DSP system can be easily expanded by just connecting new DSP modules to the system. General urpose DSP modules and a VME interface module was developed. New model and techniques for the task allocation are also presented which take into account the special characteristics of parallel I/O and computation. As a realistic cost function of task allocation, we suggested 'simulation period' which represents the period of simulation output intervals. Based on the development of parallel DSP system and realistic task allocation techniques, we cound achieve good efficiency of parallel processing and faster simulation speed than real-time.

  • This paper presents the design of high speed processor for a sequence logic control using field programmable gate array(FPGA). The sequence logic controller is widely used for automating a variety of industrial plants. The FPGA designed by VHDL consists of program and data memory interface block, input and output block, instruction fetch and decoder block, register and ALU block, program counter block, debug control block respectively. Dedicated clock inputs in the FPGA were used for high speed execution, and also the program memory was separated from the data memory for high speed execution of the sequence instructions at 40 MHz clock. Therefore it was possible that sequence instructions could be operated at the same time during the instruction fetch cycle. In order to reduce the instruction decoding time and the interface time of the data memory interface, an instruction code size was implemented by 16 bits or 32 bits respectively. And the real time debug operation was implemented for easy debugging the designed processor. This FPGA was synthesized by pASIC 2 SpDE and Synplify-Lite synthesis tool of Quick Logic company. The final simulation for worst cases was successfully performed under a Verilog HDL simulation environment. And the FPGA programmed for an 84 pin PLCC package was applied to sequence control system with inputs and outputs of 256 points. The designed processor for the sequence logic was compared with the control system using the DSP(TM320C32-40MHz) and conventional PLC system. The designed processor for the sequence logic showed good performance.

  • The dynamic displacement is considered to be an important indicator of structural safety, and becomes an indispensable part of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system for high-speed railway bridges. This paper proposes an indirect strain based dynamic displacement reconstruction methodology for high-speed railway box girders. For the typical box girders under eccentric train load, the plane section assumption and elementary beam theory is no longer applicable due to the bend-torsion coupling effects. The monitored strain was decoupled into bend and torsion induced strain, pre-trained multi-output support vector regression (M-SVR) model was employed for such decoupling process considering the sensor layout cost and reconstruction accuracy. The decoupled strained based displacement could be reconstructed respectively using box girder plate element analysis and mode superposition principle. For the transformation modal matrix has a significant impact on the reconstructed displacement accuracy, the modal order would be optimized using particle swarm algorithm (PSO), aiming to minimize the ill conditioned degree of transformation modal matrix and the displacement reconstruction error. Numerical simulation and dynamic load testing results show that the reconstructed displacement was in good agreement with the simulated or measured results, which verifies the validity and accuracy of the algorithm proposed in this paper.
