This paper proposes a new reliability evaluation for traction power system. The electric railway consists of traction power systems, various vehicles, operating equipment, track, overhead line and electric equipment. It is a fundamental function of traction power systems that supply customers with reasonable price, acceptable reliability and high quality power. In a general way, the power system reliability deals with the ability to satisfy load demands in supply capability or rating of every factor. On the other hand, the reliability of traction power systems has been focused on train time delay caused by power outage. In this paper, we make a selection optimum reliability indices for the reliability evaluation of electric traction power systems. The reliability study not only applies a plan for traction supply system after detecting the vulnerable point of existing traction supply systems but also makes a role in stable operating railway.
Wind energy is currently the fastest-growing electricity source worldwide. The cost efficiency of wind generators must be high because these generators have to compete with other energy sources. In this paper, a system that utilizes an open-winding permanent-magnet synchronous generator is studied for wind-energy generation. The proposed system controls generated power through an auxiliary voltage source inverter. The VA rating of the auxiliary inverter is only a fraction of the system-rated power. An adjusted control system, which consists of two main parts, is implemented to control the generator power and the grid-side converter. This paper introduces a study on the effect of unbalanced voltages for the wind-generation system. The proposed system is designed and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. Theoretical and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed system to achieve the power management requirements for balanced and unbalanced voltage conditions of the grid.
This paper presents an advanced control technique for power density maximization of the Brushless DC (BLDC) generator by using the linear tracking method. In a generator of given rating, the weight and size of the system affect the fuel consumption directly. Therefore, power density is one of the most important issues in a stand-alone generator. BLDC generator has high power density in the machine point of view and additional increases of power density by control means can be expected. Conventional rectification methods cannot achieve the maximum power possible because of hon-optimal current waveforms. The optimal current waveform to maximize power density and minimize machine size and weight in a nonsinusoidal power supply system has been derived, incorporated in a control system, and verified by simulation and experimental work. A new simple algebraic method has been proposed to accomplish the proposed control without an FFT which is time consuming and complicated.
This study proposes a gate driver that operates semiconductor switches in the bipolar pulsed power modulator. The proposed gate driver was designed to receive isolated power and synchronized signals through the gate transformer. The gate circuit has a separate delay in the on-and-off operation to prevent a short circuit between the top and bottom switches of each leg. On the basis of the proposed gate circuit, a bipolar pulsed power modulator prototype with a 2.5 kV/100 A rating was developed. Finally, the bipolar pulsed power modulator was tested under resistive load and plasma reactor load conditions. It is verified that the proposed gate driver can be applied to a bipolar pulsed power modulator.
IGBTS are widely used for the industrial inverters in the mid power range at low voltage (440V$\~$660V) application. Advantageous features of the device are simple gate drive and high speed switching capability. Due to these advantages the application of IGBTS is enlarging into the high power application. However, to increase the power handling capacity at lower input voltage level, the current rating in each bridge arm must be enlarged. Therefore the parallel operation of IGBT devices is essentially needed. This paper describes the feasible parallel structures of the power circuit for the mid & the high power inverters and introduces the important design condition for the parallel operation of IGBT devices. To verify feasibility of the IGBT parallel operation, the feature of several IGBT devices (EUPEC, SEMIKRON's IGBT) are investigated and the power stacks are implemented and tested with these devices. The experimental results show the good characteristics for the parallel operation of IGBTS.
Current source inverter drives of auto sequentially commutated type are very popular in high power applications, because of simple power circuit configuration with four quadrant operation. But the six-step current output create harmonic problems and the input power factor of such a drive is not always good. In this respect pulse width modulated drives using gate turn off thyristors ( GTO ) are finding application, especially in traction drives. However the switching and snubber loses of a GTO do not permit the inverter switching frequency go beyond a few hundred hertz. This will again introduce low frequency harmonic problems. Multi level inverters of the 3-level and 5-level can be considered as an alternative to overcome the low switching frequency harmonic problem of the 2-level GTO inverters. But with multi level inverters the complexity of the power circuit increases. In this paper a combination of multi level ( 2-level and 3-level ) inverters and multi phase induction motor ( 3-phase and 6-phase) configurations are presented for high power VSI drives for traction applications with reduced inverter switching frequency requirements coupled with reduced voltage rating for the power switch.

In this paper, a prototype of the auxiliary resonant commutated snubber circuit(ARCS) with a high frequency transformer power regeneration loop is described for voltage source type sinewave inverter system. This is a new soft switching topology developed for three phase voltage source soft-switching inverter, active power filter and reactive power compensator has significant advantage of current rating reduction for auxiliary active switching devices. In addition, this paper presents a novel prototype of voltage-source soft switching space vector-modulated inverter with ARCS mentioned above, which is more suitable and acceptable for high-power utility interactive power conditioning, along with a digital control scheme. The steady-state operating analysis of ARCS has the remarkable features and the practical design procedure of this resonant snubber are illustrated on the basis of computer simulation analysis. The operating performance evaluations in the steady-state of this three phase voltage source soft switching inverter are discussed and compared with the three phase voltage source hard switching inverter.
As the electric system is getting larger to meet the increasing demand for electric power, the rating of power apparatus is becoming inevitably higher in its working voltage and larger in its capacity. According to KEPCO reports, power transformers in the KEPCO system have undergone troubles such as winding short insulation breakdowns every year since 1981. the cause of this troubles were high one line grounding fault currents in KEPCO systems that had direct grounding systems. KEPCO has installed the NGR(neutral grounding reactor) to lower this fault current and reduced winding short insulation breakdowns in power transformers. But when a circuit breaker opened a no load bus, some trips of circuit breakers for protecting transformer have occurred by mal-operation of 59GT(overvoltage ground relay) that detect disconnection of NGR. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed the cause and examined the effect of time delav circuit to prevent wrong operation of 59GT.
Multilevel power conversion technology has received increasing attention recently for high power applications. The converters with the technology are suitable for high voltage and high power applications due to their ability to synthesize waveforms with better harmonic spectrum and apply for the high voltage equipment with a limited voltage rating of device. In the family of multilevel inverters, the topologies based on cascaded H-bridges are particularly attractive because of their modularity and simplicity of control. This paper presents multilevel inverter with cascaded H-bridge for large-power motor drives. The main features of this drive 1) reduce harmonic injection 2) can generate near-sinusoidal voltages, 3) have almost no common-mode voltage; 4) are low dv/dt at output voltage; 5)do not generate significant over-voltage on motor terminal; The topology of the developed product is presented and the feasibility study of the inverter on 3300v 1MVA 7-level H-bridge type was tarried out with experiments.
In this paper, a high frequency transformer - assisted auxiliary active resonant commutated snubber (HFTA-ARCS) for voltage source soft switching pulse width modulated power conversion circuits is presented. A three phase voltage source type soft switching inverter incorporating HFTA-ARCS circuits in its three bridge legs can reduce current rating of auxiliary active power switches and has sensorless simplified control scheme which any specified boost current management is not required for soft switching. Its operation principle and digital control scheme are described and a practical design method of circuit parameters on this HFTA-ARCS circuit is also introduced on the basis of computer simulation. Moreover, this space voltage vector modulated soft switching inverter system with DSP-based digital control scheme Is discussed and its effectiveness is proved on the basis of performance evaluations. The operating performances of this inverter system are also compared with those of conventional three-phase hard switching inverter under practical conditions of specified parameters.
