  • Carburizing of a 12%Cr steel containing 0.6%Si was performed at 950$^{\circ}C$ for various times, and the microstructure, hardness and the water characteristics of the carburized chromium steel were examined. The results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. Carbide-dispersed layer (CD layer) with fine dispersion of $Cr_7C_3$ in martensite matrix was formed by carburizing. The radius and amount of the carbides in the surface region of CD layer were about 0.3${\mu}m$ and 35% by volume, respectively. 2. Chromium steel carburized and quench-tempered showed better wear resistance and hardness than ordinary high chromium tool steel. It is concluded from these results that fine dispered carbides are very effective in improving wear resistance and hardness.

  • Effectsof carbon content on the weldability of B-containing 620 grade high Cr ferritic cast steels were investigated. Cast steel with lower carbon content of 0.07% showed lower HAZ hardness because of the formation of lower carbon martensite in HAZ. It also showed less solidification cracking susceptibility in weld metal because of the formation of delta ferrite. However, hot ductility showed no difference between cast steels with lower and higher carbon contents. Cast steel with lower carbon content showed greater HAZ softening after PWHT in the region heated between AC1 and AC3 because of its higher base metal hardness.

  • Recently the steel parts used at automobiles are required to be used under high stress more than ever before in need of the weight down. To achieve this requirement of a high strength steel, it must be necessary to decrease inclusion content and surface defect as like decarburization, surface roughness etc.. In this study, the surface conditions are measured to know the influence on fatigue properties by two cases of two-stage shot peening iud single-stage shot peening for two kinds of spring steel(SUP7, SAE9254). This study shows the outstanding improvement of fatigue properties at the case of two-stage shot peening in the rotary bending fatigue test and this is assumed to be from decreasing the surface roughness unchanging the surface hardness increasing the compressive residual stress. Results also show fatigue failures originated at inclusion near surface, and this inclusion type is turned out to be a alumina of high hardness.

  • Surface integrity is dictated by the fabrication process of the metal part. In this work, steel specimens were prepared under various mechine conditions to achieve different degrees of deformation state. The tribological characteristics of the speciments were tested using a pin-on-disk type apparatus and other surface characterization tools. It is shown that though frictional characteristics are similar, the wear rate is significantrly affected by the properties of the surface. In the case of steel, surface cracks resulted in high wear despite the relatively high hardness of the specimen. Also, the sliding action were found to reduce the residual stress on the surface. These results indicate that there is a strong relationship between surface integrity and the tribological properties of steel, and therefore the machining condition should be optimized woth respect to tribological performance of a steel part.

  • The stainless steel wire requires good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as drawing ability, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing drawing ability of stainless steel, Ni coating methods have been used in this study. However, there is no information on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of drawed wires after Ni coating. To investigate corrosion resistance and mechanical property of drawed wire, the characteristics of Ni coated wires have been determined by tensile strength tester, hardness tester, field emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive x-ray analysis and potentiodynamic method in 0.1 M HCl. The drawed stainless steel wires showed the strain-induced martensitic structure, whereas non-drawed stainless steel wire showed annealing twin in the matrix of austenitic structure. The hardness and tensile strength of drawed stainless steel wire were higer than that of non-drawed stainless steel wire. Electrochemical measurements showed that, in the case of drawed stainless steel o ire after Ni coating, the corrosion resistance and pitting potential increased compared with non-coated and drawed stainless steel wire due to decrease in the surface roughness.

  • Variation of welded-joint hardness and tensile strength of a accelerated-cooled fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic steel with heat input was investigated. In a weld heat-affected zone, a softened zone was formed and it had lower hardness than that of a base metal. While the width of a softened zone increased continuously with an increase of heat input up to 100kJ/cm. the minimum hardness in a softned zone was almost constant after a continuos decrease up to 60KJ/cm. Because of a softened zone, the welded-joint was fractured in the HAZ and its maximum reduction of tensile strength was about 20%. Measured welded-joint tensile strength and calculated minimum tensile strength in a welded-joint was almost same, which means that the plastic restraint of a softened zone did not occur in this experiment. It is believed that as a softened zone width-to-specimen thickness ratio is as high as 2~6 in this experiment, the plastic restraint effect does not occur. Theoretical analysis shows that the plastic restraint effect occurs only when the ratio is below 0.5.

  • It has recently been raised main issue how solve the problem of insufficient energy. One of the solution is to increase the thermal efficiency of power generation system. For the purpose of high efficiency, it is necessary to increase the steam temperature and pressure. So, the use of modified $9{\sim}12%Cr$ steel having superior creep rupture strength and oxidation resistance is required to endure such severe environment. The evaluation of creep properties of those heat resistance material is very important to secure the reliability of high temperature and pressure structural components. Since creep properties are determined by microstructural change such as carbide precipitation and coarsening, It is certain that there are some relationship between creep properties and hardness affected by microstructure. In this study, SP-Creep ruptured test for newly developed 9Cr steel being used as boiler valve material was performed, and creep properties of the material were evaluated. Also, hardness test were performed and hardness results were related to the creep properties such as LMP and creep strength to verify the availability of SP-Creep test as creep test method.

  • Graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels at subcritical temperature is reported. We have studied about the effects of Ni in these steels on graphitization. The chemical compositions of the specimens were Fe-(0.54, 0.7)%-C-1.0%Si-0.1%Mn-(0.2~1.0)%Ni. After annealing at $650^{\circ}C$, $680^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$ during various time the microstructures and hardness change were observed. In order to recover the initial hardness of high carbon steel, dissolution treatment of graphite was performed at $870^{\circ}C$. In case of 0.7%C steel, graphitization was accelerated rather 1.0%Ni addition steel than 0.2% and 0.54%Ni addition steels but the graphite is coarser. In case of 0.54%C-0.2%Ni steel, graphite particles were distributed relatively homogeniously and finely. Nickel addition promotes graphitization of these steels but makes graphite blocky.

  • This present study deals with the microstructure and tensile properties of 600 MPa-grade high strength and seismic resistant reinforcing steels. The high strength reinforcing steel (SD 600) was fabricated by Tempcore processing, while the seismic resistant reinforcing steel (SD 600S) was air-cooled after hot-rolling treatment. The microstructure analysis results showed that the SD 600 steel specimen consisted of a tempered martensite and ferrite-pearlite structure after Tempcore processing, while the SD 600S steel specimen had a fully ferrite-pearlite structure. The room-temperature tensile test results indicate that, because of the enhanced solid solution and precipitation strengthening caused by relatively higher contents of C, Mn, Si and V in the SD 600S steel specimen, this specimen, with fully ferrite-pearlite structure, had yield and tensile strengths higher than those of the SD 600 specimen. On the other hand, the hardness of the SD 600 and SD 600S steel specimens changed in different ways according to location, dependent on the microstructure, ferrite grain size, and volume fraction.
