  • To investigate relationships between image guality and exposure dose, Chest X-ray films were evaluated for the following points:how much scattered radiation can affect reduction in image quality and can be permissible diagnostically? For this purpose using a test charts and Burger's phantoms. The visual evaluation of their X-ray films and the measurements of scattered radiation were carried out. The dose of scattered radiation ranging from 20 to 25% was found to be for nothing in any diagnostic obstacle. In this range, surface doses were low of 17, 21, and $25{\mu}Gy$ for The thickness of the chest of 15, 20 and 25 cm respectively. Comparison of these high voltage X-ray films with low voltage ones showed a surface dose rate of 1:11.7. Therefore, X-ray quality, photosensitive materials(film and screen) and grid should be selected very carefully for the purpose of reduction in exposure dose.

  • Background: The main goal of experiments is to compare various operational and technical characteristics of D-Shuttle semiconductor personal dosimeters of the Japanese company "Chiyoda Technol Corporation" and Harshaw thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) manufactured by "Thermo Fisher Scientific" and DTL-02 of the Russian Research and Production Enterprise (RPE) "Doza" by their occupational and calibration exposure at various dose equivalents from 0.5 to 20 mSv of gamma-radiation. Materials and Methods: Besides dosimeters DTL-02, D-Shuttle and Harshaw TLD, there were also used: (1) the primary reference radionuclide source Hopewell Designs IAEA: G10-1-12 with $^{137}Cs$ isotope (an error is not more than 6% and activity is 20 Ci), and (2) the verification device UPGD-2M of RPE "Doza" and installed in the National Center for Expertise and Certification of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kapchagai, the National Center for Expertise and Certification). Results and Discussion: The main results of researches are the following: (1) TLDs for Harshaw 6600 and DVG-02TM have an approximately equal measurement accuracy of the individual dose equivalents in the range from 0.5 to 20 mSv of gamma-radiation. (2) Advantages of dosimeters for Harshaw 6600 are due to the high measurement productivity and opportunity to indicate the dose on the skin $H_p$(0.07). Advantages of DVG-02TM consist of operation simplicity and lower cost than of Harshaw 6600. (3) D-Shuttles are convenient for use in the current and the operational monitoring of ionizing radiation. Measurement accuracy and 10% linearity of measurements are ensured when D-Shuttle is irradiated with dose equivalents below 1 mSv at the equivalent dose rate not higher than $3mSv{\cdot}hr^{-1}$. This allows using D-Shuttle at a routine technological activity. Conclusion: The obtained results of experiments demonstrate advantages and disadvantages of D-Shuttle semiconductor dosimeters in comparison with two TLD systems of DVG-02TM and Harshaw 6600.

  • This report presents the results of the environmental radiation program at Korea Advanced Energy Research Institute (KAERI) ($37^{\circ}38'N,\;127^{\circ}05'E$) and its surroundings for the last two decades (January, 1961 through December, 1980). In the 1960s, the monthly mean levels of environmental external radiation encountered ranged from a low of 14.2 microroentgen per hour to a high of 42.2 microroentgen per hour with a mean of 21.7 microroentgen per hour, while in 1970s it ranged from a low of 12.4 microroentgen per hour to a high of 40.8 microroentgen per hour with a mean of 20.4 microroentgen per hour. It may, therefore, be said that environmental radiation dose rates remained almost unchanged for the two decades except for the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s during which the off-site and on-site patterns were frequently unlike in form and intensity with appreciable differences between average values. Particular results of interest with respect to the effects of the fallout gamma dose rate on environmental radiation show that elevated levels were encountered in association with the deposits of fresh debris from Chinese and Russian nuclear weapons tests in particular.

  • Prazosin hydrochloride is an antihypertensive drug with selective ${\alpha}_1$-adrenoreceptor blocking effects. A simple high performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed and validated for the quantitative determination of prazosin in human plasma. A reversed-phase C18 column was used for the separation of prazosin and terazosin (internal standard) with a mobile phase composed of water, acetonitrile and triethylamine(75:25:0.1, V/V;pH5.0) at a flow rate of 1.5 ml/min. the fluorescence detector was set at excitation and emissionwavelengths of 250 and 370 nm, respectively. Intra-and inter-day precision and accuracy were acceptable for all quality control samples including the lower limit of quantification of 0.5 ng/ml. Good recovery (>80%) was seen in plasma. Prazosin was stable in human plasma under various storage conditions. This method was used successfully for a pharmacokinetic study in plasma after oral administration of a single 2-mg dose as prazosin base to 16 healthy volunteers. The maximum plasma concentration of prazosin was 23.1 ${\pm}$ 16.5 ng/ml at 2.1 h, and the mean area under the curve and elimination half-life were calculated to be 108.4 ${\pm}$ 74.2 ng ${\cdot}$hr/ml and 2.5 ${\pm}$ 0.6 h, respectively.

  • The Cosmic Ray Experiment (CRE) is one of the modules flown on board the KITSAT-1 satellite and consistes of two sub-systems: the Total Dose Experiment (TDE) and the Cosmic Particl Experiment(CPE). The purpose of CRE is to characterize the space radiation environment as encountered by an Earth-orbiting spacecraft. KITSAT-1 orbit is dominated by the inner Van Allen radiation belt. This region has a large population of high energy protons which contributes significantly to both long-term and transient radiation effects. The data shows that the inner Van Allen radiation belt is very stable and the solar activity influences the CPE, TDE data and SEU(Single Event Upset) rates. The result also shows that much larger high energy particle flux is recorded than the predictions of the CREME code.

  • Mirtazapine is an antidepressant agent with dual action on both the noradrenergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems. A simple high performance liquid chromatographic method has been developed and validated for the quantitative determination of mirtazapine in human plasma. A reversed-phase Cl8 column was used for the determination of mirtazapine with a mobile phase composed of 0.01M ammonium acetate solution (pH 4.2) and acetonitrile (75:25, v/v%) at a flow rate of 1.2 mL/min. Terazosin hydrochloride was used as an internal standard. The fluorescence detector was set at excitation and emission wavelengths of 290 and 350 nm, respectively. Intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy were acceptable for all quality control samples including the lower limit of quantification of 3 ng/mL. Mirtazapine was stable in human plasma under various storage conditions. This method was used successfully for a pharmacokinetic study using plasma samples after oral administration of a single 30 mg dose as mirtazapine base to 8 healthy volunteers. The maximum plasma concentration of mirtazapine was $64.1{\pm}28.0ng/mL$ at 1.8 h, and the area under the curve and elimination half-life were calculated to be $674.1{\pm}218.5ng\;h/mL\;and\;23.4{\pm}3.8h$, respectively.

  • High energy particles in the earth's radiation belts cause transient and long term effects on electronic materials, devices, and integrated circuits on board the satellites. Hence, it is very important to have the information on the space radiation environment and the damage on the electronics caused by the se high energy particles. One of the radiation monitor devices frequently used in space is RADFET, a specially designed MOSFET with a thick gate oxide region. The present study focuses on the calibration of RADFET TOT500 using the $Co^{60}{\gamma}-ray$ source. The result shows that the response of RADFET is very sensitive to the change of temperature. The peculiar behavior observed in the TDE (Total Dose Experiment) on board the KITSAT-1 is identified as the thermal effect due to the change in the eclipse rate of the satellite.

  • In this study, we studied the gamma-radiation effect of fiber Bragg gratings on the high temperature annealing condition. The fiber Bragg gratings were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 30.8 kGy at the dose rate of 115 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the gratings that were stabilized at different temperatures have clearly shown that exposure to higher temperatures increases their radiation sensitivity.

  • The basic strategy of irradiation is to deliver a dose to the cancer that is high enough to make cancer cells incapable of reproduction, while keeping the doses to the various healthy tissues below tolerable levels. In order to improve local control and survival, as a boost therapy after external radiotherapy, high dose rate transcatheteric irradiation using remote control afterloading system(RALSTRON-20B) was used for twelve patients with head and neck cancers. Present results showed complete remission of cancer in 9 out of 12 patients without treatment related complications. Although this procedure is easy to operate, well trained skillful hand is essential for good results. Furthermore our experience suggested that meticulous treatment planning should be developed for better results.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate a efficient w/v% barium suspension and w/v% sodium carboxy methyl cellulose (SCMC) for small bowel examination. Between november 2001 and june 2002, 370 patients were examined small bowel examination with oral administration of barium suspension mixed with SCMC. we classified into six groups including A(fine type 40% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC and 600 ml 0.5% SCMC administration), B(fine type 30% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), C(fine type 20% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), D(fine type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), E(D mixed coarse type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.5% SCMC), F(D mixed coarse type 25% $BaSO_4$ mixed 0.75% SCMC). We measured transparency rate of contrast media transit time, administration dose, viscosity and particle size. The transparency rate was higher then 80 kV and 90 kV in 100 kV in the same 20 mAs condition. Transit time was the fastest in A group(mean trans time 56 minutes) and the slowest in E group(mean 100 minutes), Administration dose was the smallest in A group(mean dose 541 ml and the most in E group(mean 1,100 ml), viscosity was the lowest in E(125.1 mpa/s) and the highest in A(375.5 mpa/s), and particle size was $1.0\;{\mu}m$ in A, B, C, and D group, $0.6\;{\mu}m,\;1.0\;{\mu}m,\;10.0\;{\mu}m$ in E, F group. In conclusion, we propose that the efficient condition for small examination is high voltage technique, high density $BaSO_4$, and 0.625% w/v SCMC.
