  • The high investment is necessary for the new high speed lines. So the KRRI was interested in the possibility of upgrading the existing line in order to speed up the train in the conventional lines. The tilting train system has been developed because the reconstruction of railway for the cant compensation costs very high. The purpose of the tilting system is to compensate the centrifugal acceleration in order to reduce the lateral acceleration of the passenger at high speed on the curves. The pantograph of the tilting train is indispensable in order to supply the electrification equipments with power in safe. The dynamic interaction between the pantograph and the overhead catenary system causes the variation of the contact force and the contact force variation can cause contact losses, arcing and sparking. If the spark happens between the pantograph and the overhead catenary system, the EMI(electro magnetic interface) and noises may occur. After all, the quality of current collection is deteriorated. This paper deals with the active control of pantograph and presents the LQ-servo controller to reduce the contact force variation.

  • Sealing of lubricat-air mixture in the high performance machining conte is one of most the important characteristics to carry out enhanced lubrication. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry, Velocity, pressure, turbulence intensity of profile is calculated to fina more efficient geometry and variables. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle. The working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. It is more reasonable to simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication. Turbulence and compressible flow model are used to evaluate a flow characteristic, This paper arranges a geometry of mostly used non-contact type seal and analyzes leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage on the same sealing area.

  • This paper will describe a powder and processing method that facilitates single press-single sintered densities approaching $7.5g/cm^3$. At this sintered density, mechanical properties of the powder metal (P/M) component are significantly improved over current P/M technologies and begin to approach the performance of wrought steels. High performance gears have the added requirement of rolling contact fatigue durability that is dependent upon localized density and thermal processing. Combining high density processing of engineered P/M materials with selective surface densification enables powder metal components to achieve rolling contact fatigue durability and mechanical property performance that satisfy the performance requirements of many high strength automotive transmission gears. Data will be presented that document P/M part performance in comparison to conventional wrought steel grades.

  • Nonlinear seal friction in pneumatic cylinders can impede the performance of pneumatic systems designed for high precision positioning with favorable high speed actuation. The behaviour of an elastomeric piston seal in high speed pneumatic cylinders is analysed by nonlinear finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The contact pressures, stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the piston seal are simulated with variation of interference fits, supply pressures, friction coefficients and piston rod velocities. The nonlinear finite element model of the piston seal is used to predict deformation of a seal, friction force and contact pressure distributions.

  • At present it has been cleared that even carefully polished surfaces have irregularities on them which are large compared with molecular dimensions by the progress of a scanning electron microscope. When two solids are placed together, the real area of contact is very small, so that the local pressure is high and, in general, exceeds the yield pressure of the metal. Plastic flow of the solid occurs at the summits of the irregularities so that the real area of contact is proportional to the applied load. There is adhesion at local resions of contact and the friction is, in a large measure, the force required to shear them. On this view point, the friction experiment with different specimens which are carbon steel, copper and constantan was attempted to know the characteristics of temperature change in contact with different metals. Various experiments are summerized as follows; 1) With metals of high melting point, momentary 1000 .deg. C may last below $10^{-4}$ of a second. It is thought that above phenomena back up previous adhesion theory in wear. 2) As a general rule, surface temperature in contact with different metals becomes high when the load increases while it is observed that surface temperature decreases when the load increases with shapes of specimens.

  • This paper presents an estimation procedure for axial displacement in spindle equipped with angular contact ball bearings due to rotational speed. High-speed spindle-bearing system experiences axial displacement due to thermal expansion and rotational speed-dependent characteristics of angular contact ball bearings. This paper deals with the axial displacement caused by the rotational speed-dependent effects such as centrifugal force and gyroscopic moments. To this end, a bearing dynamic model is established that includes all the static and dynamic properties of angular contact ball bearing. An analytical formula to calculate the axial displacement based on contact angles between ball and races is derived to discuss the physics regarding the axial displacement in spindle. The proposed dynamic model is compared with a reference and a commercial program. Numerical examples are presented to show the effects of centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment on the axial displacement. The proposed model is also validated with an experimental result.

  • Gaskets are usually used for the sealing of flange joints. The joint is usually composed of two flanges, a ring gasket and clamping bolts. The metal ring gasket is suitable for pipe flanges, pumps and valve joints in high temperature and high pressure environments. A very high surface stress is developed between a ring type joint gasket and the flange groove when the ring type joint is bolted up in a flange. The dimensions of flanges and ring joint gaskets for the pipe sizes that are in common use are specified in the ANSI codes. However, sometimes it is necessary to make a new design for the flange joint which is not specified in the codes, as the equipment is getting larger and larger in size. This paper presents the contact behavior of Class 600 ring joint gaskets with oval and octagonal cross sections. Five different sizes of gaskets are employed in the analysis, and one of them is newly designed on the basis of analysis results obtained from existing models. Three load steps are used to find the stress, stain and contact pressure etc., and to compare the contact characteristics among the models due to the bolt clamping force and the working surface pressure. ANSYS Workbench version15 is used to conduct the finite element analysis.

  • The study aims on the effect of material dependency in elastic- plastic contact models by contact analysis of sphere and flat contact model and wheel rail contact model by considering the material properties without friction. The various materials are selected for the analysis based on Young's modulus and yield strength ratio (E/Y). The simulation software 'ANSYS' is employed for this study. The sphere and flat contact model is considered as a flattening model, the stress and strain for different materials are estimated. The simulation of wheel-rail contact model is also performed and the results are compared with the flattening model. The comparative study has also been extended for finding out the mean contact pressure for different materials the E/Y values between 150 and 660. The results show that the elastic-plastic contact analysis for materials up to E/Y=296.6 is depend on the nature of material properties and also for this material the mean contact pressure to yield strength reaches 2.65.

  • This study examined the effects of the contact position and structure of the test probe on its signal transmission characteristics. The contact position in the operating of the test probe was considered and then divided into the plunger inner contact and barrel inlet contact. The high frequency performance of the test probes was investigated for both contact positions. The signal transmission characteristics of the test probes with the structures of double, single, and out-spring was also analyzed. The insertion and return losses were calculated using the HFSS and the characteristic impedance of the test probes was analyzed using a Q3D simulation. The insertion loss of the barrel inlet contact was smaller than that of the plunger inner contact. The contact position of the test probe may result in a change in the high frequency performance. The out-spring probe has better frequency characteristics at -1 dB insertion loss and -10 dB return loss. The double probe and single probe have the same characteristic impedance with $30.8{\Omega}$. On the other hand, the out-spring probe has an impedance of $47.1{\Omega}$. The out-spring probe is closer to $50{\Omega}$ than the other probes and then shows higher signal transmission characteristics. The out-spring probe has superior high-frequency characteristics and is expected to be suitable for high-speed applications.

  • Continuously variable transmission (CVT) of toroidal type has a elliptical shape of contact zone under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) condition, where the power is transmitted only by shearing the lubricant. Due to the small contact area of elliptical shape, the traction of the shear behaviors of lubricant over the contact zone is under extremely high contact pressure over 1.0GPa. During the power transmission by shearing the fluid, many kinds of mechanical movements occur such as squeezing, sliding, rolling and spin. Among the movements, the spin effect that is the most undesirable contact behavior in transmitting the power frequently makes significant abnormal wear damage. In this work, the analysis of elliptical contact of EHL with spin effect is performed, which will give very useful information to understand the traction behaviors in toroidal type of CVT system.
