  • Graphite is used as a sample anode active material. However, since the maximum theoretical capacity is limited to $372mA\;h\;g^{-1}$, a new anode active material is required for the development of a high capacity lithium ion battery. The maximum theoretical capacity of Si is $4200mA\;h\;g^{-1}$, which is higher than that of graphite. However, it is not suitable for direct application to the anode active material because it has a volume expansion of 400%. In order to minimize the decrease of the discharge capacity due to the volume expansion, the Si was pulverized by the dry method to reduce the mechanical stress and the volume change of the reaction phase, and the change of the volume was suppressed by coating the carbon layers to the particle size controlled Si particles. And carbon fiber is grown like a thread on the particle surface to control secondary volume expansion and improve electrical conductivity. The physical and chemical properties of the materials were measured by XRD, SEM and TEM, and their electrochemical properties were evaluated. In this study, we have investigated the synthesis method that can be used as anode active material by improving cycle characteristics of Si.

  • Novel type $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9-2x}W_xMo_xO_2$ powders were prepared by a solid-state reaction of $Li_2CO_3$, $V_2O_3$, $WO_2$ and $MoO_2$ precursors in a nitrogen atmosphere containing 10 mol % hydrogen gas, and assessed as anode materials in lithium-ion batteries. The specific charge and discharge capacities of the $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9-2x}W_xMo_xO_2$ anodes were higher than those of the bare $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode. The cyclic efficiency of these anodes was approximately 73.3% at the first cycle, regardless of the presence of W and Mo doping. The composite anode, which was composed of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.75}W_{0.075}Mo_{0.075}O_2$ (20 wt %) and natural graphite (80 wt %), demonstrated reasonable specific capacity, high cyclic efficiency, and good cycling performance, even at high rates without capacity fading.

  • Silicon is a promising next-generation anode material for lithium-ion battery, and it has been studied for commercialization due to the high theoretical capacity. However, it has problems of the volume change during charge-discharge and the poor electrical conductivity. To solve these problems, formation of SiO2 and carbon coating on the surface of silicon crystal were performed to protect the side reaction and enhance the electrical conductivity of silicon. CNT and CNF were also added to mitigate the volume change and increase the conductivity. Physical properties of asprepared samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS. Electrochemical characteristics were investigated by electrical conductivity measurement, EIS, CV and cycle performance test. (Si/SiO2/C)+CNT&CNF showed high electrical conductivity and low charge-transfer resistance, and the capacity was 1528 mAh/g at 1st cycle and 1055 mAh/g at 50th cycle with 83% capacity retention.

  • Silicon (Si) is considered as a promising substitute for the conventional graphite due to its high theoretical specific capacity (3579 mAh/g, Li15Si4) and proper working voltage (~0.3V vs Li+/Li). However, the large volume change of Si during (de)lithiation brings about severe degradation of battery performances, rendering it difficult to be applied in the practical battery directly. As a one feasible candidate of industrial Si anode, silicon monoxide (SiOx) demonstrates great electrochemical stability with its specialized strategy, downsized Si nanocrystallites surrounded by Li+ inactive buffer phase (Li2O and Li4SiO4). Nevertheless, SiOx inherently has the initial irreversible capacity and poor electrical conductivity. To overcome those issues, conformal carbon coating has been performed on SiOx utilizing ethylbenzene as the carbon precursor of chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Through various characterizations, it is confirmed that the carbon is homogeneously coated on the surface of SiOx. Accordingly, the carbon-coated SiOx from CVD using ethylbenzene demonstrates 73% of the first cycle efficiency and great cycle life (88.1% capacity retention at 50th cycle). This work provides a promising synthetic route of the uniform and scalable carbon coating on Si anode for high-energy density.

  • As the use of fossil fuels has gradually increased, so has the emission of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, leading to environmental problems. As a result, lithium-ion batteries (LiB) have emerged as the solution to this issue. To manufacture medium to large-sized lithium-ion batteries (LiB), it requires electrodes with high capacity and fast charging capabilities. Silicon (Si) is considered a next-generation anode with high-capacity properties, so, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was compounded with Si@resorcinol-formaldehyde resin (RF) composite to prevent the volume expansion of Si. It was confirmed that the composite anode prepared exhibited improved capacity and enhanced stability.

  • The inverse spinel Cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4, CFO) is considered to be a promising alternative to commercial graphite anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, the further development of CFO is limited by its unstable structure during battery cycling and low electrical conductivity. In an effort to address the challenge, we construct three-dimensional hierarchical flower-like CFO nanoclusters (CFO NCs)-decorated carbonized cotton carbon fiber (CFO NCs/CCF) composite. This structure is consisted of microfibers and nanoflower cluster composited of CFO nanoparticle, in which CCF can be used as a long-range conductive matrix, while flower-like CFO NCs can provide abundant active sites, large electrode/electrolyte interface, short lithium ion diffusion path, and alleviated structural stress. As anode materials in LIBs, the flower-like CFO NCs/CCF exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. After 100 cycles at a current density of 0.3 A g-1, the CFO NCs/CCF delivers a discharge/charge capacity of 1008/990 mAh g-1. Even at a high current density of 15 A g-1, it still maintains a charge/discharge capacity of 362/361 mAh g-1.

  • Bulky carbon layer uniformly distributed with nanoscale $Fe_2O_3$ was prepared via a direct carbonation of $Fe^{3+}$-polyacrylonitrile complexes at $700^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ flow. The iron oxide carbon composites exhibited an excellent cycling performance for lithium storage with a reversible capacity of ${\sim}810mAh\;g^{-1}$ after 250 cycles at a current rate of $100mA\;g^{-1}$. The enhancement was mainly attributed to dual functions of bulky carbon layer which facilitated the lithium-ion diffusion and accommodated the volume changes of active $Fe_2O_3$ during charge/discharge process. Our novel chemical strategy is quite effective for scalable fabrication of high capacity lithium-storage materials.

  • In this study, electrochemical characteristics of artificial graphite coated with petroleum pitch using solvent method as anode material of lithium ion battery were investigated. As the solvent, n-hexane, toluene, tetrahydrofuran and quinoline were used. The surface of the prepared anode material was analyzed by SEM and TEM. Also the electrochemical performances of the prepared anode materials were performed by constant current first charge/discharge, cycle, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests in the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved inorganic solvents (EC:DEC=1:1 vol%). The coating thickness of the prepared graphite was about 100-500 nm and the graphite coated with THF solvent had a smoother surface than that using other solvents. It was found that pitch-coated graphite (THF) show the low initial irreversible capacity (51 mAh/g), the high discharge capacity (360 mAh/g) and coulombic efficiency (99%).

  • It is necessarily required in developing Si-based anode materials for lithium ion batteries, and the related researches are actively working especially in Si-carbon composite material. On the other hand, the photovoltaic and semiconductor industries discard huge amount of Si resources, facing the environmental issue. In this study, recycled Si resource is adopted to obtain Si-carbon composite for LIB(Lithium-Ion Batteries). In order to improve high-capacity retention characteristics and cycle stability of a Si anode material for the LIB, two differenct composites having a mass ratio of silicon and pitch of 1:1 and 2:1 are synthesized and electrochemical characteristics of the anode material manufactured by simple self-assembly method. This result in excellent initial capacity with stable cycle life, and confirming the potential use of recycled Si material for LIB.

  • Three dimensional (3D) porous structures consisting of Cu@CoO core-shell-type nano-dendrites were synthesized and tested as the anode materials in lithium secondary batteries. For this purpose, first, the 3D porous films comprising Cu@Co core-shell-type nano-dendrites with various thicknesses were fabricated through the electrochemical co-deposition of Cu and Co. Then the Co shells were selectively anodized to form Co hydroxides, which was finally dehydrated to get Cu@CoO nanodendrites. The resulting electrodes exhibited very high reversible specific capacity almost 1.4~2.4 times the theoretical capacity of commercial graphite, and excellent capacity retention (~90%@50th cycle) as compared with those of the existing transition metal oxides. From the analysis of the cumulative irreversible capacity and morphology change during charge/discharge cycling, it proved that the excellent capacity retention was attributed to the unique structural feature of our core-shell structure where only the thin CoO shell participates in the lithium storage. In addition, our electrodes showed a superb rate performance (70.5%@10.8 C-rate), most likely due to the open porous structure of 3D films, large surface area thanks to the dendritic structure, and fast electron transport through Cu core network.
