  • In this paper, we have evaluated the performance of an OFDM system using hierarchical 16QAM (OFDM/HL-16QAM) for achieving high quality and high speed data and image transmission in multipath fading channel. The wireless channel for performance evaluation is assumed to include AWGN and two ray multipath fading. Through simulation we have obtained the BER performance of the system according to $E_{b}$, $N_{0}$, then compared the received image quality of proposed system with that of conventional system. From the result, it is shown that the OFDM/HL-16QAM system is more effective for data and image transmission.n.n.

  • In this paper, we propose a prgressive image transmission technique using hierarchical pyramid data structure which is constructed based on the projection data of an image. To construct hierarchical Gaussian pyramids, we first divide an image into 4$\times$4 subblocks and generate the projection data of each block along the horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and antidiagonal directions. Among images reconstructed by backprojecting the projection data along a single direction, the one giving the minimum distortion is selected. The Gaussian pyramid is recursively generated by the proposed algorithm and the proposed Gaussian images are shown to preserve edge information well. Also, based on the projection concept a new transmission scheme of the lowest Laplacian plane is presented. Computer simulation shows that the quantitative performance of the proposed pyramid coding technique using projection concept is similar to those of the conventional methods with transmission rate reduced by 0.1 ~ 0.2 bpp and its subjective performance is shown to be better due to the edge preserving property of a projection operation.

  • AT-DMB was developed to raise the transmission rate of existing T-DMB with backward compatability. The transmission and hierarchical video service technique were legislated as Korean TTA standards, and other application service techniques including data services are being developed for the commercial service. In this paper, we consider the power of transmission power level of signals in Advanced Terrestrial Digital Multimedia System according to the constellation ratio. And we propose a new scheme for normalization of transmission signal power level in AT-DMB system. Adopting this scheme, the signal power level of hierarchical modulated signal can be uniform in AT-DMB system both for B Mode and Q Mode.

  • This paper introduces an Advanced Terrestrial DMB (AT-DMB) system which provides higher efficiency of transmission and better quality of service than conventional T-DMB system. In AT-DMB, a hierarchical modulation method is applied to transmit more data while maintaining backward compatibility to conventional T-DMB receivers. This method can provide not only high quality video service but also lots of broadcasting channels. In this paper, the performance of the hierarchical modulation in AT-DMB system is analyzed with computer simulation in several environments compared with the performance of T-DMB system.

  • Recently, various transmission techniques for communication and broadcasting systems have been developed to meet the dramatically increasing requirement of consumers. Because UWB (Ultra-Wideband) is a wireless communication technique that supports high data rate with low power, it can satisfy the requirement and can be applied to various wireless communication services. The multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) system, one of UWB system, is the wireless communication system that satisfies the transmission characteristic for UWB and so it can be used for various wireless communication services. In this paper, we propose a scheme that uses hierarchical modulation which is applied in digital video broadcasting system at the source and adaptive modulation based on the channel quality at the relays. The simulation results have shown that the proposed scheme has both the advantages of the increased throughput by 33% and similar BER performance to conventional scheme.

  • In this paper, we consider hierarchical modulation (HM), which has been widely exploited in digital broadcasting systems. In HM, each independent data stream is mapped to the modulation symbol with different transmission power and normalization factors of conventional M-QAM cannot be used. In this paper, we derive the method and formula for exact normalization factor of three-level hierarchical 64QAM.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme for view-dependent transmission of three-dimensional (3-D) polygonal mesh models with hierarchial partitioning. In order to make a view-dependent representation of 3-D mesh models, we combine sequential and progressive mesh transmission techniques. By setting higher priorities to visible parts than invisible parts, we can obtain good qualify of 3-D models in a limited transmission bandwidth. In this paper, we use a multi -layer representation of 3-D mesh models based on hierarchical partitioning. After representing the 3-D mesh model in a hierarchical tree, we determine resolutions of partitioned submeshes in the last level. Then, we send 3-D model data by view-dependent selection using mesh merging and mesh splitting operations. By the partitioned mesh merging operation, we can reduce the joint boundary information coded redundantly in the partitioned submeshes. We may transmit additional mesh information adaptively through the mesh spritting operation.

  • There is SARLM scheme for dynamic adaptation to network congestion status which arises from multicast applications. However, in this scheme, when congestion occurs in a local, the waste of available bandwidth occurs in non-congestion local because of reducing of transmission rate in congestion local. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical multicast for dynamic adaptation to network congestion. In proposed scheme, we select a representative in each local. while congestion status. It receives packet from multicast sender and hierarchically transmits packet to the representative in congestion status by unicast for preventing decrease of transmission rate and the representative in congestion local transmits packet to the receivers in local by multicast. In experimental results, it was known that the proposed scheme could improve transmission rate of receivers in congestion status and more efficiently used available bandwidth.

  • Morphology is a shape preseving filter. Several morphology filter can be made by the combination of morphological basic operation. If we use morphology filter in decimation process for a hierarchical encoder, there are some advantagesin reduction aliasing effects. In this paper, we propose a new hierarchical coder with morphological filtering and vector quantization. And then, firstly, we confirm that CO filtering is the best one among the 4 kinds of morphology filters to reduce aliasing effects in Laplacian pyramid transmission proposed by Burt. Secondly, the those two coders was compared. The results of our simulation show that our new coder surpasser the Laplacian pyramid especially in complex images.

  • We analyzed the receiving performance of the DVB-S2 transmission system in the BC(Backward Compatibility) mode. The transmitter employs the hierarchical modulation, and the receiver can be implemented by the direct demodulation or the hierarchical demodulation. The performance of each demodulation scheme is analyzed by a statistical method and a computer simulation for the AWGN and nonlinear channels. The ratio of the LP/HP streams which is proper in the domestic satellite broadcasting environments, is also suggested.
