  • In these days, recommendation service in mobile environments is in the limelight due to the spread of mobile devices and an increase of information owing to advancement of computer network. The restaurant recommendation system reflecting user preference was proposed. This system uses Bayesian network to model user preference and analytical hierarchical process to recommend restaurants, but static inference model for user preference used in the system has some limitations that cannot manage changing user preference and enormous user survey must be preceded. This paper proposes a learning method for Bayesian network based on user requests. The proposed method is implemented on mobile devices and desktop, and we show the possibility of the proposed method through experiments.

  • In recent decades, extreme events have been significantly increased over the Korean Peninsula due to climate variability and climate change. The potential changes in hydrologic cycle associated with the extreme events increase uncertainty in water resources planning and designing. For these reasons, a reliable changing point analysis is generally required to better understand regime changes in hydrologic time series at watershed scale. In this study, a hierarchical changing point analysis approach that can apply in a watershed scale is developed by combining the existing changing point analysis method and hierarchical Bayesian method. The proposed model was applied to the selected stations that have annual rainfall data longer than 40 years. The results showed that the proposed model can quantitatively detect the shift in precipitation in the middle of 1990s and identify the increase in annual precipitation compared to the several decades prior to the 1990s. Finally, we explored the changes in precipitation and sea level pressure in the context of large-scale climate anomalies using reanalysis data, for a given change point. It was concluded that the identified large-scale patterns were substantially different from each other.

  • This article presents Bayesian approach to regression splines with knots on a grid of equally spaced sample quantiles of the independent variables under functional measurement error model. We consider small area model by using penalized splines of non-linear pattern. Specifically, in a basis functions of the regression spline, we use radial basis functions. To fit the model and estimate parameters we suggest a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov Chain Monte Carlo methodology. Furthermore, we illustrate the method in an application data. We check the convergence by a potential scale reduction factor and we use the posterior predictive p-value and the mean logarithmic conditional predictive ordinate to compar models.

  • The present study used a hierarchical Bayesian approach was used to develop a mixed effect model to describe the transitional behavior of subjects in time nonhomogeneous Markov chains. The posterior distributions of model parameters were not in analytically tractable forms; subsequently, a Gibbs sampling method was used to draw samples from full conditional posterior distributions. The proposed model was implemented with real data.

  • This paper presents a real-time hand gesture recognition approach for controlling a computer. We define hand gestures as continuous hand postures and their movements for easy expression of various gestures and propose a Two-layered Bayesian Network (TBN) to recognize those gestures. The proposed method can compensate an incorrectly recognized hand posture and its location via the preceding and following information. In order to vertify the usefulness of the proposed method, we implemented a Virtual Mouse interface, the gesture-based interface of a physical mouse device. In experiments, the proposed method showed a recognition rate of 94.8% and 88.1% for a simple and cluttered background, respectively. This outperforms the previous HMM-based method, which had results of 92.4% and 83.3%, respectively, under the same conditions.

  • Diagnostic tests in medical fields detect or diagnose a disease with results measured by continuous or discrete ordinal data. The performance of a diagnostic test is summarized using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). The diagnostic test is considered clinically useful if the outcomes in actually-positive cases are higher than actually-negative cases and the ROC curve is concave. In this study, we apply the stochastic ordering method in a Bayesian hierarchical model to estimate the proper ROC curve and AUC when the diagnostic test results are measured in discrete ordinal data. We compare the conventional binormal model and binormal model under stochastic ordering. The simulation results and real data analysis for breast cancer indicate that the binormal model under stochastic ordering can be used to estimate the proper ROC curve with a small bias even though the sample sizes were small or the sample size of actually-negative cases varied from actually-positive cases. Therefore, it is appropriate to consider the binormal model under stochastic ordering in the presence of large differences for a sample size between actually-negative and actually-positive groups.

  • Recently it is proposed that the Bayesian networks used as conversational agent for topic inference is useful but the Bayesian networks require much time to model, and the Bayesian networks also have to be modified when the scripts, the database for conversation, are added or modified and this hinders the scalability of the agent. This paper presents a method to improve the scalability of the agent by constructing the Bayesian network from scripts automatically. The proposed method is to model the structure of Bayesian networks hierarchically and to utilize Noisy-OR gate to form the conditional probability distribution table (CPT). Experimental results with ten subjects confirm the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • A Bayesian nonstationary probability rainfall estimation model using the Grid method is developed. A hierarchical Bayesian framework is consisted with prior and hyper-prior distributions associated with parameters of the Gumbel distribution which is selected for rainfall extreme data. In this study, the Grid method is adopted instead of the Matropolis Hastings algorithm for random number generation since it has advantage that it can provide a thorough sampling of parameter space. This method is good for situations where the best-fit parameter values are not easily inferred a priori, and where there is a high probability of false minima. The developed model was applied to estimated target year probability rainfall using hourly rainfall data of Seoul station from 1973 to 2012. Results demonstrated that the target year estimate using nonstationary assumption is about 5~8% larger than the estimate using stationary assumption.

  • In the problem of estimating estimable functions in classification linear models, we propose a method of obtaining least squares estimators of estimable functions. This method is based on the hierarchical Bayesian approach for estimating a vector of unknown parameters. Also, we verify that estimators obtained by our method are identical to least squares estimators of estimable functions obtained by using either generalized inverses or full rank reparametrization of the models. Some examples are given which illustrate our results.
