  • The tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) solid lubricant was synthesized by two different reaction processes, and the chemical and physical characteristics of synthesized WS$_2$ powder were analyzed in terms of the average particle size, morphology, crystalline phase. The solid WO$_3$ powder with the average size of 0.2 $\mu$m was reacted with CS$_2$ gas flowed with N$_2$ or 96% N$_2$ + 4% H$_2$ forming gas for 36 h and 24 h at 900$\circ$C respectively. In the case of vapour phase transport method, the 3.5 wt% iodine was added as a vapour transport reagent into the composition of tungsten and sulfur powders maintaining a constant molar ratio of W : S = 1 : 2.2. The mixture was then heat treated at 850$\circ$C for 2 weeks in vacuum The reaction product obtained showed the average size of 12 $\mu$m and the hexagonal plate shape of typical solid lubricant with 2H-WS$_2$ crystalline phase.

  • Single crystals of sapphire were grown from solution by slow cooling method using B2O3 and PbO as flux agents. The morphology of grown crystals was tube, rhombohedral, or hexagonal-plate. It was found that the morphology and the size of grown crystal were highly dependent on the amount of fluxes in the solution, the ratio of B2O3 vs. PbO, and cooling rate.

  • This article deals with the frequency analysis of viscoelastic sandwich disk with graphene nano-platelets (GPLs) reinforced viscoelastic concrete (GPLRVC) face sheets and honeycomb core. The honeycomb core is made of aluminum due to its low weight and high stiffness. The rule of the mixture and modified Halpin-Tsai model are engaged to provide the effective material constant of the concrete. By employing Hamilton's principle, the governing equations of the structure are derived and solved with the aid of the Generalize Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM). In this paper, viscoelastic properties are modeled according to Kelvin-Voigt viscoelasticity. The deflection as the function of time can be solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta numerical method. Afterward, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the effects of the outer to inner radius ratio, hexagonal core angle, thickness to length ratio of the concrete, the weight fraction of GPLs into concrete, and the thickness of honeycomb core to inner radius ratio on the frequency of the viscoelastic sandwich disk with honeycomb core and FG-GPLRVC face sheet.

  • Elastic-plastic shear buckling behaviors of the web-post in a Castellated Steel Beam (CSB) with hexagonal web openings under vertical shear force were investigated further using Finite Element Model (FEM) based on a sub-model, which took the upper part of the web-post under horizontal shear force to represent the whole web-post under vertical shear force. A simplified design method for the web-post elastic-plastic shear buckling strength was proposed based on simulation results of the sub-model. Proper boundary conditions were applied to the sub-model to assure that its behaviors were identical to those of the whole web-post. The equation to calculate the thin plate elastic shear buckling strength was adopted as the basic form to build the design equation for elastic-plastic buckling strength of the sub-model. Parameters that might affect the elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the whole web-post were studied. After obtaining the vertical shear buckling strength of a sub-model through FEM, the shear buckling coefficient k can be obtained through the back analysis. A practical calculation method for k was proposed through curving fitting the parameter study results. The elastic-plastic shear buckling strength of the web-post calculated using the proposed shear buckling coefficient k agreed well with that obtained from the FEM and test results. And it was more precise than those obtained from EC3 based on the strut model.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the synthesis characteristics of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate(for short PCC) in Ca(OH)$_2-CO_2-H_2O$ system by the continuous drop method of Ca(OH)$_2$ slurry into the solution containing $CO_2$(aq). When the flow rate of $CO_2$(g) increases and the concentration of Ca(OH)$_2$ slurry become low, the absorption rate of $CO_2$(g) become faster than the dissolution rate of Ca(OH)$_2$. Consequently, the growth of the calcite crystal plane is facilitated resulting in synthesis of $1.0{\mu}m$ of rhombohedral calcite. On the other hand, when the flow rate of $CO_2$(g) decreases and the concentration of Ca(OH)$_2-CO_2-H_2O$ slurry become high, new nuclei is created along with the crystal growth resulting in synthesis of $0.1{\mu}m$ of prismatic calcite. Maintaining 1.0wt% of Ca(OH)$_2-CO_2-H_2O$ slurry, 120 drops/min of drop rate and $25^{circ}C$ of temperature, the shape of PCC shows colloidal and spherical agglomerate at 100 mL/min of the flow rate of $CO_2$(g); the mixture of rhombohedral and plate-shaped calcite, at 200∼500 mL/min. Therefore, as the flow rate of $CO_2$(g) increases, the shape of PCC changes from colloidal and rhombohedral calcite to plate-shaped calcite. Maintaining 500 mL/min of the flow rate of $CO_2$(g), 120 drops/min of the drop rate of Ca(OH)$_2$ slurry, and $25^{circ}C$ of temperature, the shape of PCC shows the plate-shaped calcite at 1.0∼3.0 wt% of Ca(OH)$_2$ slurry; the hexagonal plate-shape calcite of the thickness of $0.1{\mu}m$ and the width of $1.0{\mu}m$, at 4.0 wt%.

  • The tungsten disulfide $(WS_2)$ solid lubricant was synthesized by two different reaction processes, i.e., the reaction between $CS_2$ gas phase and solid $WO_3$powder, and the vapour phase transport method of tungsten and sulfur in a high vacuum. The chemical and physical characteristics of synthesized $WS_2$powder were analyzed in terms of the average particle size, morphology, crystalline phase etc. in comparison with those of commercial $WS_2$powder. The solid $WO_3$ powder with the average size of 0.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was reacted with $CS_2$gas flowed with$N_2$or 96%$N_2{\times}4%H_2$forming gas for 36 h and 24 h at 90$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. $WS_2$ crystalline phase was then formed through the intermediate phase of .$W_{20}O_{58}$ In the case of vapour phase transport method, the 3.5 wt% iodine was added as a vapour transport reagent into the composition of tungsten and sulfur powders maintaining a constant molar ratio of W:S=1:2.2. The mixture was then heat treated at 85$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks in vacuum. The reaction product obtained showed the average size of 12 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the hexagonal plate shape of typical solid lubricant with 2H-$WS_2$crystalline phase.

  • The micro-defects in the SiC single crystals were characterized using a variety of the microscopic techniques (OM, TEM, AFM). It was observed that the hexagonal-plate precipitates and the longitudinal micropipes are present inside of SiC wafers. TEM results exhibited that there are amorphous phase in the SiC wafer and the phase were originated from the formation of the nonstoichiometric $Si_{1-x}_xC_x$ phases during growth process.

  • Hexagonal $\delta$-FeOOH was coated with Ba-Sol, which was produced by hydrolizing Ba(OC2H5)2, Ba-Sol coated $\delta$-FeOOH spread on a stainless plate, dried at 8$0^{\circ}C$ and then heat-treated. In this way, Ba-ferrite fine particles were produced. although there was a difference in a degree of hydrolysis of Ba(OC2H5)2, crystalline phase of Ba-ferrite appeared around 617$^{\circ}C$, and Ba-ferrite single phase was obtained after heat treatment at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr. When Ba-ferrite was made from Ba-Sol coated $\delta$-FeOOH, $\delta$-FeOOH was thermally decomposed to $\alpha$-Fe2O3 at $700^{\circ}C$, producing a porous structure which was observed by TEM photographs. But the porous structure was not observed at 80$0^{\circ}C$. Ba-ferrite, heat-treated at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr, had mean particle size of 1000$\AA$, lattice parameter of a0=5.889243 $\AA$ and c0=23.214502 $\AA$, a saturation magnetization ($\sigma$8) of 45.3 emu/g and a coercive force (Hc) of 5200Oe.

  • The crystal structures and morphologies of precipitates in $L1_0$-ordered TiAl intermetallics containing nitrogen were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under aging at an approximate temperature of 1073 K after quenching from 1423 K, TiAl hardens appreciably due to the nitride precipitation. TEM observations revealed that needle-like precipitates, which lie only in one direction parallel to the [001] axis of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix, appear in the matrix preferentially at the dislocations. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern analyses showed that the needle-shaped precipitate is perovskite-type $Ti_3AlN$ (P-phase). The orientation relationship between the P-phase and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix was found to be $(001)_P//(001)_{TiAl}\;and\;[010]_P//[010]_{TiAl}$. By aging at higher temperatures or for longer periods at 1073 K, plate-like precipitates of $Ti_2AlN$ (H-phase) with a hexagonal structure formed on the {111} planes of the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ti_2AlN$ and the $L1_0$-TiAl matrix is $(0001)_H//(111)_{TiAl}\;and\;_H//_{TiAl}$.

  • The mechanical characteristics of three types of core with two-dimensional isotropic patterns-triangular, hexagonal and starcell-were studied in applications to sandwich structures. The Young's modulus and shear modulus were calculated for the three core types in the direction normal to the faces. The compressive buckling strength and shear buckling strength were calculated by modeling each cell wall of the core as a plate under compressive or shear load. To verify this model, tests were conducted on scaled specimens to measure the compressive buckling strength of each core. The bending flexibilites of the three cores were also studied. Compliances for the three cores were measured using biaxial flexural tests. The three isotropic core patterns exhibited distinct characteristics. In the direction normal to the faces, all three cores had the same stiffness. However, the starcell core exhibited high flexibility compared to the other cores, indicating potential for application to curved sandwich structures.
