  • A split-die design for the cold forging of symmetric parts such as those having a hexagonal cross-section is presented in this paper. Parts with a hexagonal cross-section, such as bolt heads and nuts, should be forged with a die that has a hexagonal-shaped hole. A split type die is required to mitigate the buildup of stress concentrations located at the corners of the hexagonal hole. Generally, the insert of a hexagonal die is made by cutting each corner of a cylinder using a hexagonal hole and then combined with the die and shrink-fitted. However, split dies face problems when extruding material at the corners of the hexagonal split die. To address this problem, two types of split dies were evaluated: rounded hexagonal dies and angular hexagonal dies. The effects of the pre-stress ring on the dies were compared and analyzed and results show that using the angular split hexagonal die can extend the lifetime of forging dies.

  • The microstructural evolution of BaTiO3 ceramics during cubic-hexagonal phase transformation was investiga-ted. In the case of phase transformation from cubic to hexagonal BaTiO3 the hexagonal phase nucleated at the surface region of specimen. On the other hand in the case of that from hexgonal phase to cubic, cubic phase was initiated at the center region of specimen. And fast grain growth and irregular grain boundary shape could be also observed during these transformation processes. Besides low densified hexagonal BaTiO3 specimen was made with low forming pressure. The phase transformation of these specimens toward cubic phase was relatively retarded comparing with dense hexagonal BaTiO3 specimens. was made low forming pressure.. The phase transformation of these specimens toward cubic phase was relatively retarded comparing with dense hexagonal BaTiO3 specimens. These results were explained that hexagonal BaTiO3 had lowder surface energy than cubic phase.

  • We have studied the alignment and the lattice quality of hexagonal rings of h-BN films synthesized by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) method. Boron was e-beam evaporated at 1.5 $\AA$/sec and nitrogen gas was ionized using end-hall type ion gun at 60, 80, and 100 eV, respectively. Substrate was either not heated or heated at 200, 400, 500, and $800^{\circ}C$, respectively. As nitrogen ion energy increases, c-axes of hexagonal rings tend to align parallel to the substrate, which is explained by larger compressive stress at higher ion energies. Alignment of c-axis increases with temperature and shows maximum around $400^{\circ}C$. The lattice quality of hexagonal rings improves with temperature. Such behaviors can be understood from two counter trends of increasing the atomic mobility and decreasing compressive stress with temperature. Hardness of h-BN films shows the same trend with the alignment of c-axis. Ion beam assisted deposition method seems to be effective for aligning hexagonal rings and optimizing h-BN properties.

  • The hexagonal grid structure has been studied for processing and representing spatial information data in Geographic Information Systems. Visualization using a hexagonal grid has high visibility compared to other grid representation methods. However, it is difficult to effectively convey quantitative data and differences between grids depending on the geospatial data represented. In this paper, we propose a method to visually emphasize the hexagonal grid by generating shadow on the outside of the hexagonal grid. To do so, we offset the outer line segments of the hexagonal grid to be emphasized and generate a Bézier curve based on that information to determine the final shadow shape. We also apply variable transparency toward the edges of the shadow because the shadow gradually fades away from the hexagonal grid. We have shown that the proposed method can effectively generate shadow areas given not only a single hexagonal grid but also multiple hexagonal grids and can generate various shadow shapes based on user interface inputs. We apply the proposed method to Yongsan-gu, one of the districts of Seoul, and show the results of visually emphasizing it after generating shadow using the proposed method.

  • We have extended the source projection analytic nodal discrete ordinates method (SPANDOM) for more flexible applicability in analysis of hexagonal assembly cores. The method (SPANDOM-FH) does not invoke transverse integration but instead solves the discrete ordinates equation analytically after the source term is projected and represented in hybrid form of high-order polynomials and exponential functions. SPANDOM-FH which treats a hexagonal node as one node is applied to two fast reactor benchmark problems and compared with TWOHEX. The results of comparison indicate that the present method SPANDOM-FH predicts accurately $k_eff$ and flux distributions in hexagonal assembly cores. In addition, SPANDOM-FH gives the continuous two dimensional intranodal scalar flux distributions in a hexagonal node. The reentering models between TWOHEX and SPANDOM were also compared and it was confirmed that SPANDOM's model is more realistic. Through the results of benchmark problems, we conclude that SPANDOM-FH has the sufficient accuracy for the nuclear design of fast breeder reactor (FBR) cores with hexagonal assemblies.

  • Herein, we report polyvinyl butyral composites coatings containing various loadings of 72-h bath sonicated hexagonal boron nitride particles (5 ㎛) to enhance barrier properties of coatings. Barrier properties of coatings were determined in 3.5 wt% NaCl after different time periods of immersion via electrochemical techniques such as open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization test. Coatings containing sonicated hexagonal boron particles exhibited improved corrosion resistance for longer periods of immersion compared to neat coating. We also discussed effects of hexagonal boron nitride on healing properties of polyvinyl butyral. Coatings containing 1.0 wt% loading of sonicated hexagonal boron nitride showed improved long-term barrier properties than coatings with other compositions. The presence of hexagonal boron nitride also affected the healing properties of polyvinyl butyral coatings besides their barrier properties. Such improved barrier properties of composites coatings were attributed to the high aspect ratio, plate-like shape, and electrically insulated nature of the filler.

  • In this paper, the rotated hexagonal lattice model (RHLM) was proposed, which is applied to pedestrian flow, and developed the simulation model for the pedestrian counterflow. RHLM is an upgrade version of the square lattice model(SLM) and hexagonal lattice model(HLM). The simulation was performed at the hexagonal lattice $20{\times}20$ and evaluated by different speed, density and flow conditions. Simulation results are compared with SLM and show that RHLM can replicate the characteristics of pedestrian traffic more effectively and reliably than any other existing models from several perspectives. First, RHLM can explain the shortest-path movement of pedestrians and more realistic avoidance motion. If they cannot move straight direction, they can move shorter distance from previous position to destination. Second, RHLM reflects the characteristics that the pedestrian can move with higher capacity and the speed of pedestrian flow is hard to zero.

  • Several series of morphologically controlled $MoO_3$/$SiO_2$ catalysts were prepared, characterized, and tested for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) activity. Molybdenum surface loaded with 4.0 atoms $Mo/nm^2$ was prepared as sintered hexagonal and sintered orthorhombic, as well as a novel "well dispersed hexagonal" phase. Characterization by XRD, Raman, and $O_2$ chemisorption results reveals that the dispersion of $MoO_3$ over silica depends on the final $MoO_3$ phase in the order of; sintered hexagonal < sintered orthorhombic < dispersed hexagonal phase. Temperature programmed reduction (TPR) results show that both bulk and dispersed microcrystalline of $MoO_3$ reduce to $MoO_2$ at $650^{\circ}C$ and to Mo metal at $1000^{\circ}C$. HDS of DBT was performed in a differential reactor at 30 atm over the temperature range $350{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. Activity of $MoO_3$/$SiO_2$ toward HDS of DBT is proportional to dispersion.

  • In this paper, a method of edge detection from low contrast and noisy images which contain hexagonal shape is proposed. This method is based on the combination of laplacian gaussian filter and an idea of filters which are dependent on the shape. First, an algorithm which has six masks as its extractors to detect the hexagonal edges especially in the comers is used. Here, two tricom filters are used to detect the tricom joints of hexagons and other four masks are used to enhance the line segments of hexagonal edges. As a natural image, a corneal endothelial cell image which usually has a regular hexagonal shape is selected. The edge detection of hexagonal shapes in this corneal endothelial cell is important for clinical diagnosis. Next, The proposal algorithm and other conventional methods are applied to noisy hexagonal images to evaluate each efficiency. As a result, this proposal algorithm shows a robustness against noises and better detection ability in the aspects of the signal to noise ratio, the edge coineidence ratio and the detection accuracy factor as compared with other conventional methods.
