  • Although MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC) and Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) are currently the most broadly used bibliographic structures for generating bibliographic data in the library community, each has its own weaknesses in describing information resources in diverse media. If the MARC format could be implemented in a structure that reflects the multi-layered characteristics of FRBR, its use could address current problems and limitations in resource description. The purpose of this research is to propose an alternative approach that can integrate the heterogeneous bibliographic structures of MARC and FRBR through the applications of facet and facet analysis. The proposed faceted data model is expected to function as a conceptual structure that can mediate between MARC data elements and FRBR attributes in order to utilize these structures in a more reliable and comprehensive way.

  • In the field of rice research, insertional mutants have become a valuable resource for studies of gene function. However, a well-designed database yet in the area of rice functional genomics. The relevant data are widely distributed and independently managed by the individual research groups. Heterogeneous data format in the distributed database systems causes many problems related to redundancy and compatibility. In this research, integration of the distributed databases using agent technology is pursued. In particular, a data integration agent, an ontology agent, a comparison agent, and resource agents are designed, whereby the integrated database is maintained. Moreover a framework for the web-based information system, which provides information to biologists and permits biologists to add new data to the database, is proposed. To establish an interoperable data format, an XML-based data model is also developed adopting ontology concept.

  • Xenie is the JAVA application software that integrates and represents 'gene to function'information of human gene. Xenie extracts data from several heterogeneous molecular biology databases and provides integrated information in human readable and machine usable way. We defined 7 semantic frame classes (Gene, Transcript, Polypeptide, Protein_complex, Isotype, Functional_object, and Cell) as a common schema for storing and integrating gene to function information and relationship. Each of 7 semantic frame classes has data fields that are supposed to store biological data like gene symbol, disease information, cofactors, and inhibitors, etc. By using these semantic classes, Xenie can show how many transcripts and polypeptide has been known and what the function of gene products is in General. In detail, Xenie provides functional information of given human gene in the fields of semantic objects that are storing integrated data from several databases (Brenda, GDB, Genecards, HGMD, HUGO, LocusLink, OMIM, PIR, and SWISS-PROT). Although Xenie provide fully readable form of XML document for human researchers, the main goal of Xenie system is providing integrated data for other bioinformatic application softwares. Technically, Xenie provides two kinds of output format. One is JAVA persistent object, the other is XML document, both of them have been known as the most favorite solution for data exchange. Additionally, UML designs of Xenie and DTD for 7 semantic frame classes are available for easy data binding to other bioinformatic application systems. Hopefully, Xenie's output can provide more detailed and integrated information in several bioinformatic systems like Gene chip, 2D gel, biopathway related systems. Furthermore, through data integration, Xenie can also make a way for other bioiformatic systems to ask 'function based query'that was originally impossible to be answered because of separatly stored data in heterogeneous databases.

  • Next-generation mobile communication systems evolve in the form of high speed data transmission along with integration of wired-wireless network. Therefore, it needs researches on integrating service to heterogeneous networks to offer high speed data transmission and various services while supporting user mobility. In existing studies, heterogeneous networks are linked to single core network separatively, Since vertical handoff between heterogeneous networks leads to some delay, packets may be lost during vertical handoff. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an hierarchically integrated network architecture considering the characteristics of CDMA2000, WiBro, and WLAN. The hierarchically integrated networks are overlaid according to coverage of each network. Therefore, the proposed architecture can minimize handoff delay and packet loss. In addition, this paper proposes an integrated framework for next generation mobile communication networks.

  • Cyber-infrastructures for scientific and engineering applications require integrating heterogeneous legacy data in different formats and from various domains. Such data integration raises challenging issues: (1) Support for multiple independently-managed schemas, (2) Ease of schema evolution, and (3) Simple schema mappings. In order to address these issues, we propose a novel approach to semantic integration of scientific data which uses XML schemas and RDF-based schema mappings. In this approach, XML schema al-lows scientists to manage data models intuitively and to use commodity XML DBMS tools. A simple RDF-based ontological representation scheme is used for only structural relations among independently-managed XML schemas from different institutes or domains We present the design and implementation of a prototype system developed for the national cyber-environments for civil engi-neering research activities in Korea (similar to the NEES project in USA) which is called KOCEDgrid (http://www.koced.net).

  • This paper describes a new modeling method for the prediction of transmembrane protein topology. The structural regions of the transmembrane protein have been modeled by means of a multiple state hidden Markov model that has provided for the detailed modeling of the heterogeneous amino acid distributions of each structural region. Grammatical constraints have been incorporated to the prediction method in order to capture the biological order of membrane protein topology. The proposed method correctly predicted 76% of all membrane spanning regions and 92% sidedness of the integration when all membrane spanning regions were found correctly.

  • An Order Management System related to press die fabrication in automobile industry are developed in this research. This system is constructed by CORBA and XML to avoid disorder from data integration. Because CORBA can integrate diverse applications within distributed heterogeneous environments and XML can be made use of data exchange format, The developed system is available on almost any hardware platforms, operation system environments, and programming languages.

  • Diversity in hardware and software is increasing ever and our networked computing environment is becoming more diverse. The development of software becomes expensive works because of a collection of diverse computers, storing various data type in different places, working together by incompatabilities of operating system and various databases and protocols. CORBA is a standard for distributed computing environment and for system integration of heterogeneous distributed environment. CORBA provides many technical benefits for effective system integration and seamless infrastructure for distributed communication environment of heterogeneous systems. In this paper, we proposed a system integraton model based on CORBA for distributed object environment, softwarc reuse and the intcrconnecion of WWW. The model is composed of factory server, trading server, convcrsion scrvcr and applicaton scrvcr. Thc proposed model can easy application development and system integration. And we implcmcntcd thc gateway for cooperation with WWW. As a proof of the proposed model, we show how the distance learning system designed using the services provided by the proposed model.

  • Recently, smart home environments which provide complex services through smart appliances are becoming realized, due to the advances in connected devices and network technologies. Current smart home environments are mostly restricted, because of difficultly of integration of heterogeneous smart appliances. Therefore radical service integration is impracticable. In this paper, we analyze and implement Machine-to-Machine (M2M) standards which are established by European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for integrating heterogeneous devices and services. Smart Home is one of the areas covered by ETSI M2M standards, however these standards are just standardized, so adaption and assessment in smart home are not proved yet. Therefore, this paper analyze ETSI M2M standards by focusing the data transport model and evaluate by selecting the most commonly used smart home scenarios and by implementing ETSI M2M standards compatible smart metering system. In some points ETSI M2M standards are not efficient because of its complexity of structure, however ETSI M2M provides sophisticated features for integrating M2M which are appropriate to adopt diverse smart home environments.

  • Currently, the components of the GIS have been physically run on a stand-alone system. With rapid advances in internet technology, GIS users require that they are able to not only access they heterogeneous and remote GIS database as well as their own information, but also share them. However, these GIS have the defects that can not handle formats different from own data format. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to integrate the components of the heterogeneous and remote GIS using CORBA in order to solve these problems, which is a distributed object technology, the mediator and wrapper technology in client and server layers.
