  • A DF (Directory Facilitator) provides yellow pages services for other agents in agent platform. That is to say, the agents are able to register the descriptions of the services they provide for DF or inquire DF about the services other agents provide. The Current DF cannot federate with heterogeneous agent platforms. Because DF is not opened to the other DF in the heterogeneous agent platform, it is need to something about federation technology between them. Thus, we propose the database server for the federation technology among DFs. The main purpose of the database server is to provide the environment where agents can register their services and search about the services that other agents on the heterogeneous platform provide.

  • We focus on the mobile agents which are considered as new paradigm to solve information retrieval of large volumes of data in the distributed and heterogeneous environment. The mobile agent moves the computation to data instead of large volumes of data to computations. In this paper, we propose an information retrieval model, which can effectively search data in the distributed and heterogeneous environment, using mobile agents. Our model is applied to the design and implementation of an Q&A(Question and Answer) retrieval system. Our Q&A retrieval system, called QASSMA(Q&A Search System using Mobile Agents), uses mobile agents to retrieve articles from Q&A boards and newsgroups that exist in the heterogeneous and distributed environment. QASSMA has the following features and advantages. First, the mobile retrieval agent moves to the destination server to retrieve articles to reduce the retrieval time by eliminating data traffics from the server to the client host. Also it can reduce the traffic that was occurred in the centralized network system, and reduce the usage of resources by sending its agent and running in the destination host. Finally, the mobile retrieval agent of QASSMA can add and update dynamically the class file according to its retrieval environment, and support other retrieval manner. In this paper, we have shown that our Q&A retrieval system using mobile agents is more efficient than the retrieval system using static agents by our experiments.

  • This paper presents synchronization of LTV (Linear Time-Varying) MAS (Multi-Agent Systems) with heterogeneous time-varying disturbances under a fixed, connected, and undirected communication network. All the agents can collect only relative state information from their neighborhoods. To achieve synchronization of the MAS, an integral control scheme is proposed based on relative state information between agents.

  • As todays's networks are typically heterogeneous and very often comprised of multi-platform, multi-vendor network components, mobile agents have been proposed as a solution to the problem of the management of increasingly heterogeneous networks. Mobile agents are no longer statically resident on managed devices for network management: in contrast, they are migratory, replaceable at any time as necessary, and may be equipped with mini expert systems which can diagnose and fix networks' faults on behalf of the manager. Therefore, in this paper, the MIB browsing facilities for network management using the JAMAS and mobile agents are implemented. That is, the network manager accesses the MIB information through mobile agents with which communicate the SNMP agent of each of managed devices. The implementation performance is also evaluated.

  • In this paper, we discuss how ontology Plays roles in building a distributed and heterogeneous knowledge-base system. First, we discuss relationship between ontology and agent in the Knowledgeable Community which is a framework of knowledge sharing and reuse based on a multi-agent architecture. Ontology is a minimum requirement for each agent to join the Knowledgeable Community. Second we explain mediation by ontology to show how ontology is used in the Knowledgeable Community. A special agent called mediation analyzes undirected messages and infer candidates of recipient agents by consulting ontology and relationship between ontology and agents. Third we model ontology as combination of aspects each of which can represent a way of conceptualization. Aspects are combined either as combination aspect which means integration of aspects or category aspect which means choice of aspects. Since ontology by aspect allows heterogeneous and multiple descriptions for phenomenon in the world, it is appropriate for heterogeneous knowledge-base systems. We also show translation of messages as a wave of interpreting multiple aspects. A translation agent can translate a message with some aspect to one with another aspect by analyzing dependency of aspects. Mediation and translation of messages are important to build agents easily and naturally because less knowledge on other agents is requested for each agent.

Abstract It has been assumed that all application agents in a multi-agent system are pre-invoked and remain active regardless of whether they are actually used. Although this kind of static agent invocation simplifies the management of agents, it causes several problems such as the system overload and a waste of resources, especially in the areas of the workflow management and the electronic commerce that consist of tens and even hundreds of application agents. A solution for these problems is the scheme of dynamic agent management that selectively invokes only agents that are actually requested and terminates them when they are no longer needed. This method prevents a waste of system resources and alleviates the complexity of agent communications. This paper proposes an agent management system implemented in Java that supports interactions between application agents that are developed using different languages. Dynamic agent invocation is accomplished by Java Native Interface(JNI) that links two heterogeneous methods, and by KQML language interface that facilitates the communications between heterogeneous agents. This scheme of dynamic agent management provides efficient resource usage, easy extensibility, dynamic adaptibility to changes in the environment, and improved cooperation.

  • Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on modeling the bargaining game using artificial agents on within-model interaction. However, very few attempts have been made at study on between-model interaction. This paper investigates the interaction and co-evolutionary process among heterogeneous artificial agents in the bargaining game. We present two kinds of the artificial agents participating in the bargaining game. They play some bargaining games with their strategies based on genetic algorithm (GA) and reinforcement learning (RL). We compare agents' performance between two agents under various conditions which are the changes of the parameters of artificial agents and the maximal number of round in the bargaining game. Finally, we discuss which agents show better performance and why the results are produced.

  • Many multicast applications, such as video-on-demand and video conferencing, desire quality of service (QoS) support from an underlying network. The differentiated services (DiffServ) approach will bring benefits for theses applications. However, difficulties arise while integrating native IP multicasting with DiffServ, such as multicast group states in the core routers and a heterogeneous QoS requirement within the same multicast group. In addition, a missing per-flow reservation in DiffServ and a dynamic join/leave in the group introduce heavier and uncontrollable traffic in a network. In this paper, we propose a distributed and stateless admission control in the edge routers. We also use a mobile agents-based approach for dynamic resource availability checking. In this approach, mobile agents act in a parallel and distributed fashion and cooperate with each other in order to construct the multicast tree satisfying the QoS requirements.

  • The Mobile agent-based distributed systems become obtaining significant popularity as a potential vehicle to allow software components to be executed on heterogeneous environments despite mobility of users and computations. However, as these systems generally force mobile agents to use only common functionalities provided in every execution environment, the agents may not access environment-specific resources. In this paper, we propose a new framework using Aspect Oriented Programming technique to accommodate a variety of static resources as well as dynamic ones whose amount is continually changed at runtime even in the same execution environment. Unlike previous works, this framework divides roles of software developers into three groups to relieve application programmers from the complex and error prone parts of implementing dynamic adaptation and allowing each developer to only concentrate on his own part. Also, the framework enables policy decision makers to apply various adaptation policies to dynamically changing environments for adjusting mobile agents to the change of their resources.

  • In a widely distributed environment, many occasions arise when people need to filter informationwith email clients. The existing information agents such as Maxims and Message Assistant have capabilities of filtering email messages either by an autonomous agent or by user-defined rules. FlexMA, a variation of FAMES (Flexible Asynchronous Messaging System) is proposed as an information filtering agent. Agents in our system can be scaled up to adapt user's various demands by controlling messages delivered among heterogeneous email clients. Several functionalities are split into each agent in terms of component configuration with the addition of multiple agents'cooperation and negotiation. User-defined rules are collected and executed by these agents in a semi-autonomous manner. This paper demonstrates how this design is feasible in a flexible message system.
