A Study on Narrative Structure of the Hero Character in the Movie 'Captain America' Series (영화 '캡틴아메리카' 시리즈에 나타난 영웅 캐릭터의 서사구조에 관한 연구)

  • Chapter 1 and 2 of this study examined the methodology of modern storytelling using the hero narrative structure. This involved analyses of Joseph Campbell's monomyth structure, which is the prototype model of modern storytelling and Christopher Vogler's story structure in which the monomyth structure is classified into 3 Acts and 12 Stages. In addition, the movie 'Captain America' was analyzed based on Vogler's narrative structure theory. According to the analyses results, the hero of 'Captain America' fully follows Christopher Vogler's hero narrative structure but in some cases, he does not follow the existing hero narrative structure. It is interpreted that this is because heroes of modern tales have different birth backgrounds from mythical heroes. There is also a difference even in the stage where a hero completes all adventures and returns home between modern tales and myths due to different social backgrounds. Therefore, these findings provide a basis for modification and supplementation of a modern hero epic. Through this analysis, the modified modern hero narrative structure is evaluated to be appropriate as a basic model for modern storytelling. Further, it is expected that those who frame a film script can complete a new hero epic while following the structure of syntagmatic systems by selecting a level among Northrop Frye's paragmatic systems based on this structure and considering story themes and heroes' personality and characteristics.

The Hero's Journey of Animation from the Spatial Map Model (애니메이션 영웅서사의 공간지도 연구)

  • This study defined the animation space as the concept of map based on the space of Joseph Campbell's heroic narrative. The space in which the animated character exists is an image symbolic language that reflects the inner and outer growth stages of the hero. I focused on the spatiality that plays the role of the power to lead the narrative and examined the meaning as the mediator that leads the heroic narrative. First, 6 spatial variables were derived by observing 'Hero's Journey 'which is used as a basis of US commercial animation scenario. Second, spatial variables are defined as 64 zones and proposed as 'Spatial Map Model of the Hero's Journey' (SMMH). Third, the character space of was applied to 'SMMH', and the change of space utilization rate and spatiality and the narrative meaning were analyzed. This study extended the narrative of animation space which was not actively studied to map concept. It is possible to provide a different viewpoint in animation production and research.

  • Asura: The City of Madness, which was released in 2017, attracted great attention even prior to its release with the combination of Director Kim Sung-su, and actors, Jung Woo-sung, Hwang Jung-min, Ju Ji-hoon and Kwak Do-won. Faithful to its genre as a crime film of film noir, Asura: The City of Madness created multi-layered issues by the overthrow of the archetypal hero character and variation of the heroic narrative structure drew diverse interpretations among both critics and viewers alike. This study aims at analyzing the heroic narrative structure of Asura: The City of Madness based on Christopher Vogler's "The Hero's Journey" and examining how the universality and typicality of narrative structures as mentioned by Vogler are applied to this film. Although the universal and typical characteristics of all narrative structures cannot be analyzed through Christopher Vogler's The Hero's Journey, five atypical characteristics could be derived from this film that deviate from the universality mentioned by Christopher Vogler by looking at the characteristics of the heroic narrative structure implemented as Han Do-kyung, the leading character and a "hero," proceeds through the 12 stages. This study examines which variations such atypical characteristics brought to the heroic narrative structures in crime films what has changed in audiences' expectations, and how it could work as an alternate narrative.

This study today, the various cultural areas which are becoming popular in Japan's historical hero 'Yoshitune' a heroic drama, the hero's narrative research stories In the analysis occupies an important place in the Joseph Campbell's 17 steps of heroic narrative, based on analysis achetype and adaptation. Campbell, 11 of the 17 stage dramas to apply different levels, and the omission of two steps, and shows a variation of the four stages, in order to relaunch the popular culture as the content selection and a constant strain was able to find out that you need.

  • Despite the fact that culture and the industrial market is growing rapidly and becoming competitive, Disney animation studio has kept its reputation. They have their own know-how accumulated for a long time to stimulate the audience's sensibilities beyond time and space. This study is looking for the strategy of Disney animation using effects and forms of Hero's narrative. As a result, the original works have been adapted by 3 spaces of hero's narrative and songs was prepared according to the journey. Characters was constructed by combining original and it made an antithetical Antagonist and the triangle of helpmates. These strategies satisfy contemporary needs, as well as Disney's ideology using transformational resilience. Research will be needed to utilize the elements of culture through the analysis of the common strategy for success in spite of the time change.

  • The development and expansion of American style mass media in 1938 created contemporary narratives comparable with the Greek narrative in the past, and one of the leaders is comic book 'Superman.' Although American hegemonism or expansionism was rejected by autonomous independent countries including the Third World nations, the heroic narratives transcending the diverse races and peoples in the U.S. were supported by mass cultures and media and had huge impacts on heroic narratives and various media in many other countries. In particular, 'Superman' occupies an epochal position in the history of comic books as it reinterpreted a universal and contemporary heroic narrative model into a Greek hero and a Christian hero and suggested it visually.

  • This paper is a study on popularise aspects and consciousness of times about Seol-In-Gui's narrative in the Joseon Dynasty. Seol-In-Gui is general of Dang(唐) and he entered the war between Goguryeo(高句麗)and Dang. The war between Goguryeo and Dang is ended victory of Goguryeo. And Joseon peoples was long for power of Goguryeo and recognized again history of Goguryeo. So discourse of regaining native land was formed in the Joseon Dynasty. Besides was very popular in the Joseon Dynasty. Seol-In-Gui's narrative and are quite similar. And Dang-Tae-Jong, Ul-Ji-Gyeong-Deg's old story was prevalence. Dang-Tae-Jong and Ul-Ji-Gyeong-Deg entered war between Goguryo and Dang. Therefore Seol-In-Gui's narrative was popular in the Joseon Dynasty. Popularise aspects of Seol-In-Gui's narrative as follows. First, Seol-In-Gui's conquest of Yodong(遼東) narrative and heroism was gradually emerged in Seoul block printed of 40, 30 sheets version and printed book of .   • Ludo-narrative dissonance is a prevalent problem among open-world genre video games. However, Ghost of Tsushima (2020) alleviates this issue by designing its characters and narrative structure influenced by Akira Kurosawa's samurai films. The game's protagonist represents "Bushido," a samurai code, and the structure exudes similarity to Joseph Campbell's "Hero's Journey," which heavily influenced Kurosawa's films. The developers also designed the gameplay mechanics such as level-up system, map design, and side quests based on these narrative traits, ultimately making the goal of the narrative and the gameplay mechanics cohesive.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the narrative of VR disaster and safety Education introduced by disaster film narrative. VR(Virtual Reality) is be suitable technology for disaster and safety Education due to media characteristics as 'immersion', 'presence', 'interactivity', 'pleasure'. Disaster film narrative is able to be worth VR disaster and safety education as a variety of stories and educational effect. For this study, examine a theoretical study and a visiting research of 'Busan 119 Safety & Experience Center'. This study concludes that Firstly need to introduce catharsis effect, Secondly, build 'interactive narratives' that ensure active participation of users, Thirdly, introduce an 'adventure game' narrative element, Fourthly, introduce a hero-shaped narrative in which the user becomes a one-man hero, And lastly, need education as use user's multiple access and group experience learning. Therefore, This thesis is of academic value in that it suggest a desirable new direction of narrative in VR disaster and safety education.

The Shot Density Montage Pattern for Annimation (애니메이션의 샷밀도 몽타주 패턴)

  • This study analyzed the shot pattern through the tempo of segmented shot duration and studied the relationship with the unique emotion of the story. The structure of the story was classified into 3 chapters, 17 sequences, 83 scenes, 287 beats, and 1636 shots. Shot density is a method of visualizing tension in visual storytelling, and since it is a result obtained by mathematically calculating the density of divided shots, it can be helpful in designing tension delivered to the audience. Nine shot density patterns were extracted. The ascending(+) type was classified as A, B, C, D, 4, the descending(-) type, E, F, G, H, 4, and the maintenance(/) type, I, 1 type. Based on the spatiality of the 17 stages of Campbell's heroic narrative and McGee's story structure, the narrative level of the tree structure was proposed, and the symbolic meaning of the shot rhythm in the practical aspect of the story function was proposed to present a systematic methodology in the direction of production.
