In taking medicine by using decoction of Jujubae Fructus, chief pathogenic factors of that prescription were deficiency syndroms of the heart, retention of phlegm and fluid, retention of fluid in the body, consumptive disease, weakness.
Objectives: To optimize the preservation method of herbal decoction, we investigated the content of principle components of Pyungwi-san, liquiritin, glycyrrhizin, and hesperidin according to preservation temperature and period. We also investigated the changing patterns of pH and microbial population in Pyungwi-san decoction as a model case. Methods: With samples preserved at different temperatures, the content of liquiritin, glycyrrhizin, and hesperidin was determined using HPLC and microbial population was determined as viable counting method up to 8 times every month. Identification of isolated bacteria was performed by 16S rDNA analysis. Results: The content of liquiritin and glycyrrhizin did not change according to the preservation temperature and period, but that of hesperidin was severely decreased at room temperature. The isolate from the decoction was identified as Bacillus licheniformis by 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Microbial population appeared after 3 months' preservation and reached maximum value at 4 months; at all tested temperatures, the pH showed the lowest value (4.4-4.5) simultaneously. Conclusion: From the results, it seems to be that the microbial growth affects the pH of preserved decoction but not the change of liquiritin and glycyrrhizin content.
Objectives: This study presents observation of microorganism such as total aerobic bacteria, total fungus, E. coli, Pseudonomas aerugjnosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium in herbal decoction manufactured by Korean medical clinic. Methods: We examined to observe microorganism using the requirements for the experimental methods recommended by FDA. For the identification, we observed microscopic methods and carried out polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA purification. The purified DNA samples were analyzed by DNA sequencer. As compared with NCBI database. the results were identified by sequences similarity. Results and conclusion: 26 (55%) of 46 decoctions observed positive for microbial test. 12 (46 %) of 26 positive decoctions exceed requirement of microbial limit test. These microbial colony identified genus of Bacillus using microscopic and DNA sequencing methods.
Evidences from various countries suggest that toxic heavy metals in herbal medicine may constitute a serious health problem. In order to evaluate whether the toxic heavy metals caused by herbal medicine intake, blood samples collected from 222 patients taking herbal medicine were analyzed. In average levels of analyzed metals, $0.4{\sim}33.9%$ of total samples for 8 metals such as Cd, Co, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn except Cr and Fe exceeded the upper limit for WHO reference value. In analysis of regression coefficients indicating the levels of metals increased or decreased after taking herbal medicine for one month, however, there were different aspects by intake types for herbal medicine. For example, the metals increased by taking decoction in blood samples were as follows; Cd and Pb whether Mn, Ni and Pb as increased metals were identified in the group taking pill and decoction(combined intake group). The odds ratio showing values higher than 1 indicating that people who take herbal medicine would have possibility higher for metal accumulation in blood than that from people who do not take herbal medicine. The metals showing the odds ratio higher than 1 were Hg and Ni in decoction group, and Cd and Hg in combined intake group. However, eight of the total, 10 metals showed the odds ratios lower than 1 by taking herbal medicine. Thus, this may explain the possible role of herbal medicine as a chelator for heavy metals in body.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of chemical composition or biological activities between decoction and commercial herbal medicines of Samchulkunbi-tang (Shenzhujianpi-tang, SKT). Methods : The extracts of SKT from decoction (SKT1) and two different commercial extractive granules (SKT2 and SKT3) were prepared. The index components of SKTs were analyzed with HPLC. The antioxidant activities of SKTs were studied by measuring free radical scavenging activities on ABTS and DPPH. The anti-inflammatory effects were determined by measuring NO, $PGE_2$ and IL-6 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. Results : The contents of 7 components were 1.40-6.08 mg/g in SKT1, not detected-4.75 mg/g in SKT2, 0.03-1.46 mg/g in SKT3. The scavenging activities on ABTS and DPPH of herbal formulas were increased in dose-dependent manner (SKT1>SKT2>SKT3). SKT1 significantly inhibited $PGE_2$ and IL-6 production and SKT3 slightly inhibited $PGE_2$ production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. SKT2 showed no inhibitory effects on production of inflammatory mediators such as $PGE_2$ and IL-6. Conclusions : These results demonstrate that the decoction of SKT has more strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects than that of commercial herbal medicines consistent with the contents of index components.
Objectives: This case report is presented to introduce the effectiveness of herbal decoction on patients with alcoholic liver disease. Methods: We closely observed two patients who were admitted in the Department of Internal Medicine Department 1 of Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Hospital due to alcoholic liver disease. We gave herbal decoction to these patients and then analyzed the changes in their general conditions as well as blood test results. Results and Conclusions: The treatments with herbal decoctions Cheongganhaeju-tang and Injincheonggan-tang were helpful for ALD patients. Conclusions: To provide more qualified medical service in the TKMH, they will be required to increase the proportion of non medical doctor employees, like Western medicine counterparts.
Objective : This case report aims to demonstrate the effect of Herbal medicine on menopausal syndrome. Methods : A 54 years woman suffered from menopausal syndrome with hot flush, insomnia and dyspepsia. According to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung and treated by Sosiho-tang decoction at first. But the next time the patient visited, she was treated by Oryeong-san decoction. The result of administrations were evaluated by Kupperman's index(KI), Menopause rating scale(MRS). Results : After administration of Sosiho-tang decoction for 35 days, KI was decreased from 50 to 19, MRS was decreased from 9 to 4. But her chronic dyspepsia wasn't getting better. So the KMD prescribed Oryeong-san decoction. After administration of Oryeong-san decoction for 14 days, KI was decreased from 19 to 0, MRS was decreased from 4 to 1. And her chronic dyspepsia was functionally improved. Conclusions : The patient completely recovered from menopausal syndrome and dyspepsia as treated by Sosiho-tang decoction and Oryeong-san decoction according to Diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions.
Purpose: This study was to observe the effect of "herbal decoction for sitz bath" on dermoepidermal recovery to wound tissue in rat's skin. Methods: The samples were assigned to 3 groups: control group : without any treatment, positive control group : potarose 10% solution, experiment group : herbal decoction for sitz bath. We made the open wound of $2{\times}2cm^2$ size that cut deep into the dermis. Treating the open wound for 17 days, we observed the size of the wound diminishing. On 17th days, the cell viability was measured by MTT assay. The effect anti-inflammatory and dermoepidermal recovery were examined by H&E staining, immunohystochemical staining for MIP-2, FGF. Results: The experiment group showed more recovery from the open wound comparing the control group and the positive control group on 10th days after wounding. But there was not remarkable difference between the experiment and positive control group after 17th days post-wounding. The number of MIP-2 positive reacted cell were significantly decreased and that of FGF positive reacted cell were significantly increased than positive control group at 17th days. Conclusion: According to these results, we finally concluded that "herbal decoction for sitz bath" could be effective in recovery to wound tissue.
