  • The purpose of this study was to verify the reliability and validity of the Rosenbaum self-control schedule (SCS) for assessing resourcefulness in Korea and to explore the simplified scale. The study subjects consisted of 787 adults in a community. The data was collected during the period from Oct. to Dec., 1995 and analyzed as Cronbach α, item correlation with total, Pearson correlation and factor analysis with varimax rotation using SAS. Results were as follows : The mean SCS score for this sample was 17.2 and there were statistical differences for gender(men, 13.1 ; women, 20.0) on the SCS scores. The cronbachα of SCS with 36 items was .74 and when simplified with 30 items, it's coefficient alpha was .78. The translated content of the SCS was validated by two nursing faculty members and one professor of psychology. Factor analysis revealed the most parsimonious structure was obtained when six factors were extracted and subsequently rotated via the varimax criterion. There was 40.2% of total communality variance in the SCS with 36 items. The total communality variance was slightly increased to 43.4% with 30 items of the SCS. In order to reduce from 36 items to 30 items, the process excepted 6 items having low item correlation with total and low MSA(means of sampling adequacy) of factor analysis. According to factor analysis, there are six factors such as emotion control, impulse control, self-efficacy, coping with problems, pain control and satisfaction control, The SCS was found to have low, but statistically significant, correlations with social desirability and helplessness. From the above results, it can be concluded that the reliability of the SCS(inherent and simplified) was a acceptable level and its validity was reasonable when comparing it with other validity studies. To determine the usefulness the simplified scale, further study is necessary to simultaneously compare and analyze both scales for stability.

In general, Depression is classified into Wool-Zeng type and Zeon-Zeng type. The former is similar to the neurotic type of depression, the latter is similar to the psychopathic type of depression. The clear causes of Depression are not known yet. But psychodynamic and biological factors are assumed to cause Depression. Psychodynamic factors may correspond to Chil-Zeong(七情) and biological factors to Tae-Byeong(胎病) and Dam(痰) in Oriental medicine. In Occidental medicine, Depression is treated by psychotherapy and medication. Electrically-induced spasm therapy and phototherapy also used for the treatment of Depression. In Oriental medicine, Depression is treated by more various therapy such as herb medication, acupuncture and moxibustion, oriental psychotherapy and dirigation(Gi-Gong, 氣功). Depression is not easy to cure. When the treatments of Occidental medicine and Oriental medicine are mutually cooperated, more effective medical care might be expected. Therefore, futher study to treat depression by mutually cooperated therapy is necessary.

  • The author reviewed the effect of psychological factors on the development and course of cancer. Cancer is a bilogical disease, but it also has a large number of psychological aspects. There have been no reports that specific personality types had tendency to cause cancer. In some studies, however, type A personality was reported to have relevance to a higher incidence of cancer and a better prognosis. And in other studies, type C personality was reported to have relevance to a higher incidence of cancer. It was reported that people who had strong tendency to control their anger and regarded the rationality and antiemotionality in their behavior as important things were susceptable to cancer. In the course of cancer, the patients who had more positive and aggressive attitude and 'fighting spirit' to their disease tended to have a better prognosis than those who accepted their disease as fate. Some studies showed that feeling of helplessness and loss of control had a negative offset on cancer. It was reported that, in the early stage of cancer, the psychological factors had great influence on the prognosis, but in the middle and late stage, the influence decreased. For the future studies, cancer should not be regarded as a single disease and a single condition. The kinds and stages of cancer should be difined for studies. The scales for psychological evaluation for cancer patients should be sensitive and selected carefully, considering the complexity of the cancer patients mind. The need for prospective studies is emphasized. Finally, as the cured cancer patients have great difficulties in returning to their work and daily life, rehabilitation of cancer patients is also emphasized.
