  • The development technology for the helicopter is improved by the increasing of computing power and advanced test facilities. The increasing efficiency of fuel consuming by the developing of improved lift-to-drag rotor system is the major issue, the noise reduction for ecology(civil area) and increase of survivability to reduce noise detection(battlefield) also are important. This investigation shows the classification of helicopter external noise and requirements, the noise flight test methods, the numerical modeling method for aero-acoustic of rotor blade and the result of CAA(Computational Aero-Acoustic) for main rotor blade.

  • Most of engine control systems for helicopter turboshaft engines are equipped with dual sensors. For the system with dual redundancy, analytic methods are used to detect faults based on the system dynamical model. Helicopter engine dynamics are affected by aerodynamic torque induced from the dynamics of the main rotor. In this paper an engine model including the rotor dynamics is constructed for the T700-GE-700 turboshaft engine powering UH-60 helicopter. The singular value decomposition(SVD) method is applied to the developed model in order to detect sensor faults. The SVD method which do not need an additional computation to generate residual uses the characteristics that the system outputs in direction of the left singular vector if an input is applied in direction of the right singular vector. Simulations show that the SVD method works well in detecting and isolating the sensor faults.

  • Self-noise from the rotor blade of the UH-1H Helicopter is obtained numerically by using the Brooks' empirical noise model. All of the five noise sources are compared with each other in frequency domain. From the calculated results the bluntness noise reveals dominant noise sources at small angel of attack, whereas the separation noise shows main noise term with gradually increasing angel of attack. From the results of two different tip Mach numbers with the change of angel of attack, the OASPLs at M = 0.8 show about 15dB larger than those at M = 0.4.

  • In order to develop an precision aerial pesticide application system to be attached to an unmanned helicopter which can be applied to small lots of land, this study analyzed the flowing and spraying characteristics of the spray droplets by the main rotor downwash by setting the application conditions at the flight altitude of 3 m, the diameter of main rotor of 3.1 m, the boom length of around 2.8 m, and the spraying rate of 8 L/ha. The results of this study are summarized below. Through analysis of the covering area ratio of the spray droplets by main rotor downwash by nozzle type, boom with tilt angle and height, it was found that the covering area ratio of the twin flat-fan nozzle of around 25% was more uniform than other types of nozzle, also boom with $10^{\circ}$ tilt angle and spraying height of 3 m was shown to be the appropriate conditions for aerial application of pesticides. It was found that the nozzle position to minimize the scattering loss of spray droplets due to vortex phenomenon at both ends of the main rotor was around 10 cm from the end of the main rotor. An application test for the aerial pesticide application system attached to the HUA-ACEI unmanned helicopter developed by the Rural Development Administration showed that the range of covering area ratio of the spray droplets was 10-25%, and the spraying width was approximately 7 m when over 10% of covering area ratio was considered for valid spraying.

  • This paper deals with an autonomous flight guidance and control algorithm design for TR301 tilt-rotor airplane under development by Korea Aerospace Research Institute for simulation purpose. The objective of this study is to design autonomous flight algorithm in which the tilt-rotor airplane should follow the given waypoints precisely. The approach to this objective in this study is that, first of all, model-based inversion is applied to the highly nonlinear tilt-rotor dynamics, where the tilt-rotor airplane is assumed to fly at helicopter flight mode(nacelle angle=0 deg), and then the control algorithm, based on classical control, is designed to satisfy overall system stabilization and precise waypoint following performance. Especially, model uncertainties due to the tiltrotor model itself and inversion process are adaptively compensated in a simple neural network(Sigma-Phi NN) for performance robustness. The designed algorithm is evaluated in the tilt-rotor nonlinear airplane in helicopter flight mode to analyze the following performance for given waypoints. The simulation results show that the waypoint following responses for this algorithm are satisfactory, and control input responses are within control limits without saturation.

  • The main rotor control system is an important structural part of a helicopter that manages the thrust and control force of the helicopter. The main rotor control system consists of a swashplate assembly, scissor assembly, pitch rod assembly, guide, etc. The main rotor control system must endure various loads, such as the thrust and control force, and must meet the optimized fatigue safety life. The rotating swashplate is an important structure influenced by the pitch rod load and rotating scissor load. In this paper, the accuracy of a result about the rotating swashplate part of the main rotor control system is proven through comparison between fatigue test and FEM results. Based on this result, we estimate the lifetime and deduce the fatigue safe lifetime.

  • This paper contains the development procedure of small-scaled composite rotor blade for helicopter hingeless rotor system. Composite blade design is conducted by using CORDAS program developed by KARI and dynamic analysis is conducted by using Flightlab which is commercial software for helicopter analysis. Also the optimizing procedure of iterative design was described. The designed composite blades were manufactured after establishing the effective curing method. Through this research, the experiences of composite rotor blade development were accumulated and will be applied to the related research field.

  • This paper addresses a method for structural optimum design of composite rotor blade. The basic model of a composite helicopter main rotor blade is designed and its parameters determining the structural/dynamic properties are studied. Through the investigation of flap/lag/torsional stiffness, the structural properties of the model are analyzed. In this study, helicopter rotor blades are analyzed by using VABS. The computer program VABS (Variational Asymptotic Beam Section Analysis) uses the variational asymptotic method to split a three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity problem into a two dimensional cross-sectional analysis and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam problem. This is accomplished by taking advantage of certain small parameters inherent to beam-like structures. In addition, the rotational stability of the blade is estimated by the frequency diagram from FE analysis(MSC.Patran/Nastran) to understand its vibrational property. From the result, design parameters to determine and optimize the properties of the model are presented.

Generally Rotating stability and fatigue test technique is one of Key-technology on test and evaluation for helicopter rotor system Rotating test of hingeless rotor system was achieved by means of rotor vibration characteristic and aeroelastic stability test GSRTS, equipped with hydraulic actuator and 6-component rotating balance was used to test hingeless rotor system especially for an observation of blade motion including flawing, lagging and feathering. Rotating test was done in hover and forward flight condition. Small-scaled blade fatigue test condition was determined by blade load analysis with the reference table of composite materials(S-N curve). Fatigue test bench was developed for the estimation of blade fatigue life, and tested its characteristic.

  • This study presents the numerical investigation of the trajectory of rocket launched from a helicopter. The nonlinear mathematical model of armed configuration of UH-60 helicopter was developed while Hydra 70 unguided rocket was modeled to simulate the rocket behavior. The effects of various inflow models on the launched rocket trajectory are obtained. Similarly, rocket launch simulation was performed to determine the unsafe flight maneuver condition where the rocket trajectory is critically close to the helicopter main rotor tip path plane.
