  • While environmental pollution being developed, there have been some cases that residents on certain parts of Seoul area have cultivated vegetables in a small scale, and consumed the produce of theirs thinking them not polluted. Therefore the need for study about whether those vegetables and soil were polluted was growing. In this study, Seoul area (Tobong-dong, Chang-dong, Wolgyedong, P'il-dong, Oksu-dong, and Karibong-dong) and Kyanggi area (Changhang, P'och'an, Kap'yang, Yangp'y~ng) where pollution was thought to be less severe than that of the former were selected for the sampling area. Cabbage, pumpkin and young pumpkin were sampled and dried to be analyzed the contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and moisture content was also analyzed. And at the same time 0.1 N-HCl soluble heavy metal content of soil was measured, and the results obtained were descrived as follows. Heavy metal contents of soil in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.184 ppm, 0.118 ppm, Cr 2.355 ppm, 0.441 ppm, Cu 29.16 ppm, 3.331 ppm, Ni 1.650 ppm, 0.829 ppm, Pb 26.77 ppm, 4.696 ppm, Zn 57.47 ppm, 14.94 ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of cabbage in Seoul and Kyonggi were Cd 0.407 ppm, 0.241 ppm, Cr 0.388 ppm, 0.402 ppm, Cu 6.853 ppm, 4.486 ppm, Ni 1.479 ppm, 0.878 ppm, Pb 0.812 ppm, 0.258ppm, Zn 112.2 ppm, 54.86ppm respectively. Heavy metal contents of pumpkin in Seoul and Ky6nggi were Cd 0.011 ppm, 0.011 ppm, Cr 0,262 ppm, 0.197 ppm, Cu 3.302 ppm, 2.539 ppm, Ni 0.717 ppm, 0.369 ppm, Pb 0.257 ppm, 0.083 ppm, Zn 28.75 ppm, 14.01 ppm respectively. Correlation between heavy metal contents of soil and those of vegetables was represented high as a whole. In all heavy metals cabbage had higher values of concentrations than those of pumpkin (p<0.001). Concentrations of young pumpkin were higher than those of big pumpkin. It was probably due to the fact that young pumpkin containing not only inner part of pumpkin but also seeds was used as a sample. When classified by region, relatively high concentrations were observed in the samples of Karibong-dong, and in the sample of Jungtang riverside Cd was higher, and in the sample of Namsan Pb was higher than any other district.

  • In order to study the general characteristics of reservoir and stream sediments, various analysis tests were conducted. Water contents and ignition loss were measured to know the primary sediment characteristics. The COD, total phosphorus and nitrogen were contained for the determination of organic substance content. For the purpose of establishing the contamination degree of heavy metals, some heavy metal contents were investigated. In heavy metal contents, reservoir sediments showed somewhat higer value than stream sediments. As a result, the reservoir sediment content of all analysis items were higher than stream sediment.

  • Laboratory experiments were performed to examine the effects of water content and to see if permittivity had sufficient sensitivity to identify subsurface contamination. Both real and imaginary permittivities of unsaturated sand were strongly governed by the volumetric water content. Especially, a linear relationship between real permittivity and volumetric water content was derived at high frequencies (MHz ranges). Heavy metals in pore fluid result in significant increases in the effective imaginary permittivity, due to ionic conduction, but decreases in the real permittivity arises due to the decreased orientational polarization of water molecules caused by hydration of ions. Clear increase in the effective imaginary permittivity with heavy metal concentration was found to be valuable in the application of electrical methods for detecting heavy metals in the subsurface. However, because the permittivity is primarily dependent on the volumetric water content of soil, pre-evaluation on the volumetric water content is required.

  • The quality standards of solid refuse fuel (SRF) define the values for 12 physico-chemical properties, including moisture, lower heating value, and metal compounds, according to Article 20 of the Enforcement Rules of the Act on Resource Saving and Recycling Promotion. These parameters are evaluated via various SRF Quality Test Methods, but problems related to the heavy metal content have been observed in the microwave acid digestion method. Therefore, these methods and their applicability need improvement. In this study, the appropriate testing conditions were derived by varying the parameters of microwave acid digestion, such as microwave power and pre-treatment time. The pre-treatment of SRF as a function of the microwave power revealed an incomplete decomposition of the sample at 600 W, and the heavy metal content analysis was difficult to perform under 9 mL of nitric acid and 3 mL of hydrochloric acid. The experiments with the reference materials under nitric acid at 600 W lasted 30 minutes, and 1,000 W for 20 or 30 minutes were considered optimal conditions. The results confirmed that a mixture of SRF and an acid would take about 20 minutes to reach $180^{\circ}C$, requiring at least 30 minutes of pre-treatment. The accuracy was within 30% of the standard deviation, with a precision of 70 ~ 130% of the heavy metal recovery rate. By applying these conditions to SRF, the results for each condition were not significantly different and the heavy metal standards for As, Pb, Cd, and Cr were satisfied.

  • This research was performed to check the transport characteristics of heavy metals in contaminated soil, that is, the influence of humic acid and phosphate on transport characteristics of heavy metals was studied. From the results of column mode experiments about heavy metal behavior, the order time to reach breakthrough and equilibrium was soil + humic acid( 20g ) > soil + humic acid ( 5 g ) > soil without Humic acid addition > soil+humic acid( 50g ). It is because the dissolved organic carbon content increased as the soil organic matter content increased. As the phosphate increased, so did the time to reach breakthrough and equilibrium. The order of time was soil + phosphate( 50 mg ) > soil + phosphate( 20 mg ) > soil . phosphate( 10 mg ) > soil without phosphate addition. It is because the phosphate ion worked as alkalinity donor and the calcium ion co-injected worked as the accelerator of coprecipitation of heavy metals.

  • In order to utilize inorganic components in coal and wastewater sludge as an environmentally stable material, slag-forming is considered as one of the suitable methods better than producing as an ash. Coal slag that was produced by gasification as well as the slag made from wastewater sludge by incineration or melting process have been analyzed with the viewpoint of recyclability. Slags produced by water quenching exhibited a cracked shape that has a size of few millimeters with sharp edges. Slags contain the unburned carbon content below 0.15% and expose mostly amorphous structural characteristics. Analysis results in the extraction of heavy metal compounds demonstrate that both slags from coal and wastewater sludge could be utilized as a safe recycle material even with a Japanese environmental regulation that is ten times more stringent than the current Korean standard. Slags from coal and wastewater sludge show significant differences in contents of each heavy metal compound. Since the future trend of environmental regulation shifts to the control of total content for each heavy metal compound, proper mixing of slags that contain different heavy metal contents might be an option for manufacturing recycle materials.

  • In order to obtain the basic data for recycling of coal mine tailings, the characteristics of coal mine tailings, the formation of AMD from the tailings and the leaching of heavy metal from the tailings were studied. The samples were characterized in terms of chemical composition, mineral composition and content of heavy metal of the tailings were investigated. The effects of time, temperature, content of pyrite, sulfide minerals on the formation of AMD were also investigated. For the leaching tests, the KS method, TCLP method and column test were used. From the investigated data, we can see that the coal mine tailings can be used as aggregate for filling used gallery. We can also see that the formation of AMD from coal mine tailings can be prevented by mixing 4% or more limestone with it.

  • In order 새 investigate the spatial and seasonal variations of heavy metal pollution in heavily industrialized urban area, urban roadside sediments were collected for five years from gully pots in Seoul City. A series of studies have been carried out concerning the physicochemical characteristics of the sediments in order to evaluate the contamination of heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. Roadside sediments and uncontaminated stream sediments were analyzed for total metal concentrations using acid extraction. The roadside sediments are characterized by very high concentrations of Zn (2,665.0$\pm$1,815.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Cu (445.6$\pm$708.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Pb (214.3$\pm$147.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g) and Cr (182.1$\pm$268.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g), indicating an artificial accumulation of these metals to the sediment chemistry. Comparing with average contents of uncontaminated stream sediments, roadside sediments were shown zinc 14 times (up to 64.4), copper 9 times (up to 181.7), lead 6 times (up to 63.7), cobalt 6 times (up to 168.7), nickel 4 times (up to 98.4), cadmium 2 times (up to 12.8) and chrome 2 times (up to 40.2) high content. The relative degree of heavy metal pollution for roadside sediments collected from each district in Seoul City is evaluated using the “geoaccumulation index”. As a result, heavy-metal contamination is highest centering the oldest residential district and industry area, and contamination level decreases as go to outer block of the city. The factor analysis results indicate that the levels of Cu, Ni, Fe and Cr are strongly related to numbers of factories, whereas the concentrations of Cr, Zn and Cd dependant on pollution index, indicating artificial contamination due to site-specific traffic density.

  • The stabilizing behavior of heavy metals in the silicate glass containing Electric Arc Furnace dust (EAF dust) were studied by the Toxic Characterization Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test, and the change of crystalline phase and glass network structure were investigated as a function of EAF dust content added. The glass containing EAF dust of $30\;wt\%$ an oxygen/network former ratio(R) of $2\~3$ allowing a fairly stable network structure thus showed much lower heavy metal leaching concentration than that for containing EAF dust above $50\;wt\%$ at TCLP test. For the glass containing EAF dust $50\~60\;wt\%$, however, the R was over 3, which weakened the glass network structure and increased the heavy metals leachate. Adding the EAF dust to a glass decreased the degree of Si-O-Si symmetry and increased the number of non-bridging oxygen, which decreased the chemical durability of glasses. When the dust content in a glass was over $70\;wt\%$, the Zn and Fe ions reacted to form the spinel crystal rather than to bind to network structure of glass and leaching concentration of those ions from the specimen decreased, so the spinel phase could be attributed to lowering a heavy metal leaching.

  • Pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of fly ash on growth responses and on accumulation of the heavy metals in soil. Two kinds of fly ash, anthracite and bituminous coal, were treated with different levels of 0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 kg/pot(20L). Tobacco growth was better by application of fly ash than that by the control. However, the early stage of growth by application of bituminous coal, 1.2 kg/pot, was decreased due to the boron toxicity occurred by fly ash. Generally, tobacco yield was significantly increased with applying fly ash, showing the highest yield at 1.2 kg/pot for anthracite and at 0.8 kg/pot for bituminous coal. The content of total nitrogen in leaves was higher with fly ash than that of the control, while the content of calcium in leaves was low, Contents of heavy metal and the other minerals were not significantly different between the control and the treatment of fly ash. Soil pH after experiment was linearly increased with application level of fly ash, indicating that the application of bituminous coal was more effective than that of anthracite. Contents of available phosphate, exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$+ and $Mg^{2+}$ in soil were increased by application of fly ash, especially with bituminous coal. Contents of Cu, Cr, and Ni were increased with application level of bituminous coati even if the contents were still lower than critical levels for farming land. The other heavy metals were similar between the control and the application of fly ash.
