To evaluate the biological response of sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi with different body size to heavy metals and its suitability for ecotoxicity assays, the effects of Cr, Cu and Zn on its clearance and oxygen consumption rates were investigated. Clearance and oxygen consumption rates of H. roretzi with various body sizes were calculated at different metal concentrations. Both clearance and oxygen consumption rate were negatively correlated with body sizes. Clearance rate of H. roretzi decreased gradually with increasing concentration of heavy metal, the decreasing rate was in an order of Cr>Cu>Zn. The oxygen consumption rate first increased at low metal concentration (below $100{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) and then decreased rapidly with increasing metal concentrations. The decreasing rate was in an order of Cu>Cr=Zn. There was a trend that the clearance rate and oxygen consumption rate decreased drastically under a concentration of $400{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, and then decreased smoothly when the metal ion concentration increased continually. So the oxygen consumption and clearance rate at a concentration of $400{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ Cu could be thought as a suitable biological tool for exotoxicology analysis.
This study was performed to develop the biological treatment technology of wastewater polluted with heavy metals. Heavy metal-tolerant microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas putida, P. aeruginosa, P. chlororaphis and P. stutzeri possessing the ability to accumulate cadmium, lead, zinc and copper, respectively, were isolated from industrial wastewater and mine wastewater polluted with various heavy metals. The effect of several external factors, such as temperature, pH and heavy metal compounds on heavy metal accumulation in the cells was investigated. The amount of heavy metal accumulation into cells according to the kind of heavy metal compound was slightly increased in the case of the heavy metal compound with -nitrate group, but generally, there is little change according to the kind of compound in the amount of heavy metal accumulation. The amount of heavy metal accumulation according to the precultured time was increased in the case of the cell precultured for 24 hours, but generally the precultured time did not affect to the amount of heavy metal accumulation. Heavy metal accumulation into cells was affected by several external factors, such as temperature and pH. The optimum temperature and optimum pH of the accumulation of heavy metal into cells were $20{\sim}37^{\circ}C$ and pH $6{\sim}8$, respectively. By increasing the concentration of each heavy metal-tolerant microorganism in the solution, the total amount of heavy metal accumulated was increased, whereas the amount of heavy metal accumulated per cell(mg, heavy metal/g, dry cells) was decreased. These results indicated that the amount of heavy metal accumulated was not proportional to the concentration of microorganisms.
The heavy metal removability of four kinds of tea was investigated in the various conditions: particle size of tea(10, 35. 70, 100 mesh), concentration of heavy metal(25, 50, 100ppm) and extraction temperature(30. 50, 70. 10$0^{\circ}C$). The removabilities by the tea solids were increased as the particle size decreased, concentration of heavy metal increased, and extracting temperature increased. Of the four kinds of tea Pb, Cd and Cu removability by Eucommia ulmoides Oliv tea was the highest. In addition, heavy metal removability by Schizandra chinensis Baillon tea was better than that of other tea as extraction temperature was increased.
The present work investigates the possible use of fly ash for the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were conducted and the influences of metal concentration, pH, and fly ash concentration were investigated. Heavy metals used in these studies were zinc, lead and cadmium. Adsorption studies were done over a range of pH values (3-10) at $25^{\circ}C$ and heavy metal concentrations of 10-400 mg/L using fly ash concentrations of 10, 20 and 40 g/L. Experiments were also conducted without fly ash to determine the extent of heavy metal removal by precipitation. Kinetic and equilibrium experiments were performed and adsorption data were correlated with both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The results indicate that fly ash can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals in the aqueous solutions, yet the degree of removal depends on the pH.
The concentrations of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), and arsenic (As) in sand samples collected from selected children's playground and their correlation with environmental parameters, such as concentration of particulate matter in the atmosphere ($PM_{10}$), apartment age (> 5 years), clay and organic matter contents in sand samples, were analyzed. The average heavy metal concentration in samples was 0.040 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Cd, 0.200 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Cr, 1.75 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Cu, 15.1 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Ni, 3.42 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Pb, 66.7 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Zn and 0.750 mg $kg^{-1}$ for As, all of which were below the environmental regulatory level established by Korea Ministry of Environment. However, in the consideration of direct and oral exposure by children to playground sand, the risk of the concentration range in the samples might be greatly enhanced. Heavy metal concentration in samples collected from high $PM_{10}$ (> $70{\mu}gm^{-3}$) area was slightly greater than in samples from low $PM_{10}$ (< $70{\mu}gm^{-3}$), indicating the contribution of particulate matter in air phase to heavy metal concentration in playground sand samples. The concentrations of both Cd and Pb were the highest in apartments older than 21 years (0.050 mg $kg^{-1}$ and 5.28 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Cd and Pb respectively) and showed positive correlation with apartment age (p<0.01 and p<0.001 for Cd and Pb, respectively). Clay content in playground sands ranged 3.8~11.2% and was positively correlated with heavy metal concentration. Organic matter content was negligible (mostly < 0.1%) and showed poor correlation with heavy metal concentration. In conclusion, concentration of heavy metals in playground sand was found to be predominantly influenced by the apartment age and clay content in sand samples and supplemented by dust deposition of particulate matter ($PM_{10}$) from atmosphere.
The effects of heavy metal, Cd on the degradation of the herbicide butachlor (N-Butoxymethyl-2-chlor-2',6'-diethylacetanilide) in soils were examined the laboratory. The degradation of the herbicide in soil was greatly inhibited by the amendment of the heavy metal, Cd. The inhibited rate of Cd concentration was high in the order of 30 ppm>20 ppm> 10 ppm>0 ppm. And tile degradation rate of butachlor was high in order of 80 $\mu$M>40 $\mu$M>20 $\mu$M. The effects of Cd on the degradation of the butachlor in soil varied with concentration of heavy metal and butachlor.
This study was performed to investigate and assess the heavy metal contamination of sediment in main stream and tributaries of the Han-river in the vicinity of Seoul. Sediment were sampled at eight locations of main stream and eighteen locations of tributaries in the spring, summer, and fall in 1993. Six heavy metals of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Hg, were assessed. For an assessment of heavy metal contamination in sediment, the assessment method of Hakanson was modified to estimate for Han-river, then classification method of Muller in sediment quality was applied. For an assessment of contamination in each heavy metal, Contamination factor C$_f^i$ which was defined the ratio of concentration of i heavy metal in investigated location to background concentration of i heavy metal in uncontaminated upper area was used. The sediment quality in each heavymetal was classified as follows if C$_f^i$<1, Class I for Non contamination, if 1 < C$_f^i$ < 3, Class II for Low contamination, if 3< C$_f^i$ <6, Class III for Moderate contamination, if 6< C$_f^i$ <12, Class IV for Considerable contamination, and if C$_f^i$ > 12, Class V for High contamination.(abbreviation)
The concentration of heavy metal were studied for the estimation of quality in herbal medicines which is Bupleuri Radix, Paeoniae Radix, Dioscoreae Rhizoma and Astragali Radix in products of north Gyeongbuk area. And we collected soils from several area in Gyeongbuk, and determined heavy metal concentration of soils by ICP. We compared with herbal medicines in products of Gyeongbuk and their soils. For the heavy metals contents of Gyeongbuk area, in Gong Jung Ri, represented the higher level, it may be due to a near the road. The Cd contents in soil was not a wide difference. For the As and Pb contents in soil, Song Sa Ri (Bupleuri Radix) represented the higher level (0.68mg/kg, 1523rng/kg). Heavy metal contents in cultured herbal medicines and their soils did not give reproducible results. But the degree of correlation between a few heavy metal contents of Dioscoreae Rhizoma and their soil showed the good transfer from the soil.
We compared with heavy metal concentration of herbal medicines in products of Gyeongbuk and the other area of Korea. The concentration of heavy metal were studied for the estimation of quality in herbal medicines which is Bupleuri Radix, Paeoniae Radix, Dioscoreae Rhizoma and Astragali Radix in products of north Gyeongbuk area. The average levels of heavy metal of herbal medicines in Gyeongbuk area are as follows : Mercury is 0.037mg/kg, Chromium is 0.093mg/kg, Nickel is 0.108mg/kg, Copper is 0.475mg/kg, Zinc is 3.14mg/kg, Manganese is 1.52mg/kg, Iron is 7.83mg/kg, and Cadmium, Lead and Arsenic is not detected. It was very lower in concentrations than those of average Korea area. Therefore, Gyeongbuk area appear to be more proper to cultivated land than other area.. Minerals such as Ca and K were extracted more than Na and P in herbal medicines products of Gyeongbuk respectively. Minerals and heavy metal concentrations distributed in herbal medicines were analyzed. Little or no relationship was observed between minerals and heavy metals.
Microorganisms play a significant role in bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated seawater. In this study, we reported an effective removal of Cu and Zn in marine envionment by using Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (D. desulfuricans) which belong to sulfate reducing bacteria. D. desulfuricans showed stable growth characteristics in high salt concentration and had resistance to heavy metals. Cu and Zn was removed not only by physical adsorption on the surface of bacteria but also by precipitation reaction of microbial metabolism by D. desulfuricans in seawater. In case of different heavy metal concentration, Cu was effectively removed 85% at 25 ppm and 60% at 50 ppm and Zn was effectively removed 54% at 50 ppm and 46% at 200 ppm, respectively.
