Parametric study on submerged body shape of an oscillating hemisphere point absorber was conducted to predict the optimal relation between radius and draft of the body. As an additional damping due to power takeoff system, the optimal damping same as wave radiation damping was applied to the PTO system to produce the maximum wave power. Body response spectrum and power spectrum were obtained for various peak frequencies on wave spectra. It was found that the maximum power can be generated when the peak frequency of available wave power was 20% greater than that of wave spectrum.

We have developed the novel device that can extract energy from ocean waves utilizing the heaving motion of a floating mass. The major components of the energy converter are: a floater, a counterweight, a cable, a driving pulley, two idler pulleys, a ratchet, and a generator. The device generates power through the tension force in the cable and the weight difference between the floater and the counterweight. When the system is at static free condition, the tension in the cable is equal to the weight of the counterweight which is minimum. Therefore it is desirable to keep the counterweight lighter than the floater. However, experiments show that during the rise of the water level, the torque generated by weight of the counterweight is insufficient to rotate the driving pulley which causes the cable on the floater side to slack. The proposed application of the tension pulley rectifies these problems by preventing the cable from becoming slack when the water level rises. In this paper, the dynamics model is modified to incorporate the dynamics of the tension pulley. This has been achieved by first writing the dynamical equations for the tension pulley and the energy converter separately and combining them later. This paper investigates numerically the effect of the tension pulley on various physical quantities such as the cable tension, the floater displacement, and the floater velocity. Results obtained indicate that this application is successful in suppressing large fluctuations of the cable tension.

Towing performance of a midwater trawl system was examined aboard the training ship KAYA(2900ps) at the East Sea using the midwater trawl gear that had been designed and manufactured in accordance with the vessel. In this experiment, the trawl system data, the towing speed, the length and tension of the warp, net mouth height, and the depth of otter boards and net were measured and analyzed. The results are as follows: 1. In case of heaving in the warp with constant towing speed, the tension was suddenly increased and then again was reduced and after returned to the original steady state tension. At this time, net height was reduced a bit by ascension of ground rope, but returned to it’s original value. In the case where the warp was paid out, the tension was suddenly decreased and after increased and then returned to the tension of the original state, and the net height was greatly increased instantly by the sinking of the ground rope and then returned to the steady state 2. In the case of increased towing speed mm constant warp length, the tension was increased, and reducing the net height, the gear depth was decreased. On the other hand, in the case where towing speed was reduced, the tension was reduced and the gear depth and net height was increased. 3. Otter boards show a swing motion in the scope of 5~ 10m continuously. Otter boards responded to the state change of the trawl system at first, and then the motion of the net appeared. 4. The depth of net center was about 20m deeper than that of the otter boards, it shows about 0.4 times the warp length at the 4knots towing speed.
Motion reduction of an offshore structure at resonant frequency is essential for avoiding critical damage to the topside and mooring system. A damping plate has a distinct advantage in reducing the motion of a floating structure by increasing the added mass and the damping coefficient. In this study, the heave motion responses of a circular cylinder with an impermeable and a permeable damping plate attached at the bottom of the cylinder were investigated thru a model test. The viscous damping coefficients for various combinations of porosity were obtained from a free-decay test by determining the ratio between any pair of successive amplitudes. Maximum energy dissipation occurred at a porous plate with a porosity P = 0.1008. Experimental results for regular and irregular waves were compared with an analytical solution by Cho (2011). The measured heave RAO and spectrum reasonably followed the trends of the predicted values. A significant motion reduction at resonant frequency was pronounced and the heaving-motion energy calculated by the integration of the area under the heave motion spectrum was reduced by more than 75% by the damping plate. However, additional energy dissipation by eddies of strong vorticity and flow separation inside a porous damping plate was not found in the present experiments.
Soil deformations such as settlement, heaving and lateral flow have frequently happened on marine reclaimed soft grounds due to embankment filling or banking. The electrical resistivity survey was applied to investigate on ground surface such soil deformation without disturbance of ground. A test embankment was performed to assess soil deformation in marine reclaimed soft grounds, where was located at Sihwa area in western coast of Korean peninsula. The soft ground was composed of clayey sediments. After embankment filling, the boundary of soil deformation affected by the filling could be investigated with application of the electrical resistivity survey. The result of electric resistivity survey shows that the extent of deformation is about 5 m laterally to the southern direction of embankment and about 5~6 m vertically in depth, which is about 1-1.2 times of embankment height. This shows that the electric resistivity survey can be applied to interpret the ground deformation in a soft ground region.

Under the assumption of potential flow, free-surface flow around a hydrofoil is calculated by the high-order spectra1!boundary-integral method, This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear interactions between hydrofoil and free-surface can be simulated in time-domain. In this method. the wave potential which represents the nonlinear evolution of free-surface is solved by the high-order spectral method and the body potential which provides the effects of hydrofoil and shed vortex is solved by the boundary-integral method. The calculated free-surface profiles which are generated by a uniformly translating hydrofoil are compared with other experimental results. And they show relatively good agreements each other. As another example, free-surface flow generated by a heaving and translating hydrofoil is calculated and discussed.

Design procedure of LEG(Linear Electric Generator) is introduced by performing the time-domain analysis for the heaving motion of a floating buoy coupled with LEG. A vertical truncated buoy is selected as a point absorber and a double-sided Halbach array mover and cored slotless stator is adopted as a linear electric generator. LEG with a double-sided Halbach array mover and cored slotless stator is designed with the input data such as the heave motion velocity and wave exciting forces in time-domain. The validity of designed LEG is confirmed by performing generating-characteristic-analysis under the sinusoidal motion of a buoy, based on the numerical techniques such as FE(Finite Element) analysis. In particular, an ECM(Equivalent Circuit Method) is employed as the design tool for the prediction of generating characteristics under irregular wave conditions. Finally, we confirm that the ECM gives reasonable and fast results without sacrifice of accuracy.

The case study on ground subsidence was conducted and the cause of ground subsidence was evaluated, main cause were insufficient site exploration, inaccurate strength parameters, defective temporary wall, insufficient reaction for boiling and heaving, excessive excavation and so on. Risk factors during excavation were identified from the cause of ground subsidence and risk factors were site exploration, selecting excavation method, structure analysis, measurement plan, excavation method construction, underground water level change, natural disaster and construction management. The survey of the experts on risk factors identified was conducted to evaluate the importance of risk factors, and confidence analysis was performed to evaluate the significance level between survey result and survey respondent using Chi-square Test.
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on applicability of Light-weighted Foam Soils (LWFS) consisted of dredged soils for soft ground improvement. The engineering properties of LWFS were comprehensively investigated based on the previous experimental tests. And three dimensional numerical models which reflect soft ground conditions were adopted to evaluate the applicability of LWFS compared to SCP and DCM. A number of cases were analyzed using a stress-pore pressure coupled model. The results indicated that LWFS method enables to reduce more settlement, lateral flow and heaving than SCP method and enable to reduce more residual settlement than DCM method. Also it was revealed that such effect depends on the properties of LWFS such as unit weight, unconfined compressive strength, deformation modulus and Poisson's ratio.
Korea is known to have seasonal frozen ground during a winter season due to climatic and ground conditions. Temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$ cause pavement failure by frost heaving and thaw settlement. A frost protection layer has been constructed in pavements to avoid damage caused by frost action. Anti-frost design methods in Korea have been adopted, which is established in U.S. and Japan. However the characteristics of soils in Korea are different and there are no reasonable modifications to accommodate these characteristics. Therefore, adequate pavement design procedures including seasonal frost action, as well as construction and maintenance practices are required. In this paper, the frost penetration depths along national roads in Korea are presented based on field measurement over several years (1991~2010). The frost penetration depths are analyzed with respect to the Provinces of Korea and sunny/shaded areas.
