  • An unknown input observer is proposed that can be used in wheelbase preview control of commercial vehicles. The preview and state information, required to calculate actuator force, are reconstructed from the measurement variables such as heave and pitch acceleration. Gain matrix of observer is optimally selected so that influence of system and measurement noises on the estimation error can be minimized. Estimated preview information requires low pass filtering to eliminate high frequency components resulting from differentiation of noisy output signals. Effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by numerical simulation of half car model.

  • This paper describes the effect of hull form on motion characteristics of FPSO. The purpose of the present study is to investigate seakeeping performance of ship type FPSO in comparison with those of barge type FPSO. Model test result shows that the barge type FPSO is better in heave and pitch motion, while the ship type FPSO is superior in roll motion.

  • The coefficients of equations of heave, pitch and coupled motion are evaluated for the small typical fishing boat(KIST-MARK Fishing Boat) with transom stern in regular head sea. And the results of computations based on eight models of strip theory are compared one another for the forward speed Froude number 0.30. There are some distinctive differences among those theories for the hydrodynamic and coupling coefficients. The former seems to be caused by the effects of the transom stern and the latter of the foward speed.

  • A numerical investigation was made to examine characteristics of rectangular pontoon type floating breakwaters in oblique waves. Sway and heave wave exciting forces, roll moment acting on the floating breakwater and three motion reponses decrease as the incident wave angle increases for the most of the wave ranges. There exists a minimum wave transmission coefficient which is a function of wave frequency. In short wave range wave transmission coefficient increases as the incident wave angle increases. In long wave range, however, wave transmission coefficient decreases as the wave incident angle increases.

  • Linearized motions of as axisymmetrical dock freely floating in a regular plane wave are discussed. An extension of the Bessho variational principle(Bessho[3]) is derived to obtain a numerical procedure for a solution of the boundary value problem associated with the fluid motion. The added mass and the damping coefficients for a circular dock in vertical(heave) and horizontal(surge) oscillations are evaluated numerically, and the resulte seems to be satisfactory.

  • For the high center of gravity vehicles the roll stiffness of their suspensions is arranged to be very high because such vehicles are in some danger of tipping over in cornering. In some cases, the effective roll stiffness is determined significantly by the compliance of the tires because of the very stiff anti-roll members incorporated in the suspension. In such cases, it is clear that the shock absorbers which may be effective in damping heave oscillations have little effect on roll oscillations. Therefore, wind gusts and roadway unevenness may cause large swaying oscillations. In this paper, to improve the stability for the high center of gravity vehicles a control scheme to augment the damping of the roll mode is proposed. As the feedback signals needed to provide damping of the roll motion, the front or rear steer angles or both are chosen because they are very related to roll motion. The scheme is effective from moderate to high speeds and stabilizes the roll mode without introducing disturbance moments from roadway unevenness as shock absorbers do. The validity on the proposed method is verified through the computer simulation.

  • In the current design codes for anti-freezing layer, the thickness of anti-freezing layer is calculated by freezing depth against the temperature condition. Therefore, they have a tendency of over-design and uniform thickness without the considerations of thermal stability, bearing capacity and frost susceptibility of materials. So, it is essential for studying the appropriateness and bearing capacity of road foundation materials as well as their seasonal and mechanical properties to take an appropriate and reasonable design of the road structure system. In this paper, the freezing and bearing capacity characteristics of typical road foundation materials were evaluated in the large scale laboratory test. LFWD (light falling weight deflectometer) was used to determine the change of elastic modulus ($E_{LFWD}$) caused by to the frost heave and thaw. Furthermore, the influence of crushed natural aggregate on the freezing of the subgrade soil was studied to verify the function and effectiveness of the anti-freezing layer.

  • In this study, numerical hull form development of a platform supply vessel, a full scale with the overall length of 26.75m, was performed to predict a bare-hull resistance and a large scale of model tests with a 1/10 scaled model were conducted to verify the success of numerical results. Numerical analysis on heave and pitch motion as a function of encounter frequency and ship's speed for the prediction of seakeeping characteristics are also presented. The experiment results of resistance agreed well with numerical analysis. As a result in the motion response characteristics, the heave RAO indicates high values with the range of encounter frequency 1.8~2.0. The Pitch RAO indicates high motion response characteristics at Beaufort scale No. 3 and 4 in rough seas.

  • Underwater gliders do not have any external propulsion systems that can generate and control their motion. Generally, underwater gliders would obtain a propulsive force through the lift force generated on the body by a fluid. Underwater gliders should be equipped with mechanisms that can induce heave and pitch motions. In this study, an inner movable and rotatable mass mechanism was proposed to generate the pitch and roll motions of an underwater glider. In addition, a buoyancy control unit was presented to adjust the displacement of the underwater glider. The buoyancy control unit could generate the heave motion of the underwater glider. In order to analyze the underwater dynamic behavior of this system, nonlinear 6-DOF dynamic equations that included mathematical models of the inner movable mass and buoyancy control unit were derived. Only kinematic characteristics such as the location of the inner movable mass and the piston position of the buoyancy control unit were considered because the velocities of these systems are very slow. The effectiveness of the proposed dynamic modeling was verified through sawtooth and spiraling motion simulations.
