  • Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen(BCL) has been commonly prescribed for stroke patients in the traditional Oriental medicine. So this study is aims to investigate the anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects of Bambusae Caulis in Liquamen(BCL) manufactured by different production process on the focal ischemia induced by intraluminal filament insertion in rats. The focal ischemia was induced by intraluminal filament insertion into middle cerebral artery. The animals were divided into four groups (n=15 in each group). The ischemia induced and not treated group : Control group, the ischemia induced and oral medication of the three kinds of BCL : BCL-A group, BCL-B group, BCL-C group. BCL-A was produced by heating at a low temperature$(250^{\circ} C)$ in electric kiln and filtering. BCL-B was produced by heating at a high temperature$(900^{\circ} C{\sim}1,000^{\circ}C)$ in yellow earth kiln and refining and filtering. BCL-C was produced by heating at a low temperature$(400^{\circ} C)$ yellow earth kiln and no refining and filtering. The anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects of the oral medication of BCL were observed by Bax, BCL-2, cytochrome c, mGluR5, cresyl violet and ChAT-stain. Our study suggests that BCl-A(was produced by heating at a low temperature in electric kiln and filtering) and BCL-C(was produced by heating at a low temperature in yellow earth kiln and no refining and filtering) show anti-apoptotic and neuroprotective effects on the focal ischemia induced by intraluminal filament insertion in rats and BCL-C is more effective than BCL-A.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the some physicochemical properties of Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) water extract (RGWE) after heated with high temperatures above $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. RGWEs were heated at 100, 110 and $120^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours by using autoclave. After RGWEs were heated at high temperature for 2 hours without not adjustment of pH, the changes of saponin, free sugars, mineral and color in the RGWEs were investigated. Total ginsenoside content in control was 1.99%, while those of RGWE were 1.65, 1.49 and 1.29% when treated at 100, 110 and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. The contents of total ginsenoside showed decreased tendency as heating temperatures were increased. The ginsenoside-$Rh_{2}$ and $-Rg_{3}$, which have been reported as very stable red ginseng ginsenosides, showed relatively strong spots on TLC when RGWEs were heated at 110 and $120^{\circ}C$. In case of free sugars in RGWEs, fructose, glucose and maltose showed high contents when compared with control, while Fe, Ca and Mg ions showed very low contents. Value of L in RGWE treated with high temperature was almost the same with control, while values of a and b were increased. Values of a were increased from -0.86 of control to +0.04, +0.05 and +1.14 when treated with 100, 110 and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. Values of b also were increased from 27.68 of control to 33.61, 33.61 and 37.42 when treated with 100, 110 and $120^{\circ}C$, respectively. Values of total color in RGWEs treated with high temperatures, E, were finally increased by values of a and b.

  • Degree-day method is very simple but essential index to estimate heating and cooling energy demand in buildings. It has been neglected, however, for the simplicity so it is difficult to find any DB for south Korean cities. Even meteorological department of S. Korea doesn't report the data officially. In this study, current methods that are being used in many countries are investigated and used to calculate degree-days of 35 south Korean cities with 30 years(1981~2010) historical data. The calculation result indicates that the error among 4 major methods are dependent on how daily or hourly temperature are treated in the calculation and how balance point temperature is defined. The errors of the methods are no larger than 6% relative to hourly degree-day method.

  • This study was conducted to examine the potential use of coffee waste (CW) as an adsorbent of HCHO by adding into fiberboard. For the purpose, CW treated with various temperatures and times was placed in desiccator with a HCHO solution and then the HCHO adsorptivity of the CW was measured by acetylacetone (ATAN) and DNPH methods. In the results of ATAN analysis, amount of HCHO adsorbed in distilled water was the lowest on the non-treated CW and steadily increased to $100^{\circ}C$-treated temperature. However, over the $100^{\circ}C$, heating temperature (H-Temp) had not an effect on the HCHO adsorptivity of CW. Amount of HCHO adsorbed on CW itself was the highest at $100^{\circ}C$ H-Temp, following by $50^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$, $0^{\circ}C$, $250^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$. For the HCHO adsorptivity of CW measured by DNPH methods, HCHO was not detected in the distilled water stirred with non-treated CW, but detected from the distilled water stirred with heating-treated CW. The content was the highest in the CW heating-treated at $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. In addition, HCHO adsorbed on CW itself increased to the H-Temp of $100^{\circ}C$ regardless of heating time, but decreased or reduced greatly degree of the increase over $100^{\circ}C$ H-Temp. In conclusion, optimal heating conditions of CW for the HCHO adsorption might be H-Temp between 100 and $150^{\circ}C$ with 10 min according as technical and economical reasons. Heating-treated CW manufactured with above the conditions can be used as an adsorbent in conventional fiberboard production for reducing HCHO emssion.

  • Most technologies of reduction process used in the heat treatment of existent metal products are related to metals applied to bolts and parts of automobiles, and nonmetal such as copper. Heating conditions and reduction gases produced in above processes depend on types of products to be treated thermally but heating systems employ electricity commonly and the reduction gases are separated into additional production equipment and a gas dryer and inefficiently provided into the system. Electrical heating system has the advantage of convenient temperature-control but is not economical because of disadvantages of high electricity-running cost and extra installation cost of a transformer. Accordingly, development of the system which has economical heating mode in which provision of reduction gas and heating conditions are unified is necessary for improvement of economy and efficiency in current reduction processes. This study aimed to develop a new advanced heat treatment furnace using catalytic combustion. thereby minimizing the cost during heating, supplying heat and reductive gas at the same time and controlling operating condition freely by changing electrical heating system to heating system by the gas combustion and regeneration of wasted heat.

  • In this study, nitrogen functional groups were introduced on graphite fiber (GF) to modify their electrical properties, and heating properties were investigated according to the treatment conditions. GF was prepared by a thermal solid-state reaction at $200^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Surface properties of the nitrogen doped GF were examined by XPS, and its resistance and heating temperature were measured using a programmable electrometer and thermo-graphic camera, respectively. The XPS result showed that the nitrogen functional groups on the GF surface were increased with increasing of urea contents, and the heating property of the GF was also improved as nitrogen functional groups were introduced. The maximum heating temperature of GF treated by urea was $53.8^{\circ}C$ at 60 V, which showed 55% improved heating characteristics compared to that of non-treated GF. We ascribe this effect to introduced nitrogen functional groups on the GF surface by thermal solid-state reaction, which significantly affects the heating characteristics of GF.

  • Resistive heating sources are widely used to prepare thin films by vapor deposition because they are cheap, and easy to install and handle in vacuum system. Graphite is one of materials used to make the resistive heating source, but until now only limited applications have been possible as it reacts easily with evaporating materials at high temperature. In this study, evaporation characteristics of aluminum have been investigated by using graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder. The employed graphite boat has been prepared by spray-coating BN power onto the cavity surface of the boat and thermal treatment with aluminum in vacuum at the temperature of more than $1400^{\circ}C$. The voltage-current characteristics as well as resistivity changes of the graphite boat have been investigated during aluminum evaporation according to the applied voltage and time. The evaporation aspect has been picturized during flash evaporation for 40 seconds based on the characterization results. The evaporation rate of the graphite boat has been compared with that of BN boat. The graphite boat showed some different characteristics compared with BN boat, in that the evaporation occurred at the last stage of flash evaporation. The film appearance according to the applied voltage has been compared, and also the reflectance of the resulting film has been investigated according to the film thickness. It has been found that the graphite boat thermally treated with BN powder can be used for aluminum evaporation without problem.

  • The microstructural evolution of Grade 91 tempered martensite ferritic steels heat treated at $760{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ for two hours was investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy disperse spectroscopy(EDS), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy(TEM); a microhardness tester was also employed, with a focus on the grain and precipitate evolution process as well as on the main hardening element. It was found that an evolution of tempered martensite to ferrite($760{\sim}850^{\circ}C$), and to fresh martensite($900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$), occurred with the increase of temperature. Simultaneously, the parabolic evolution characteristics of the low angle grain boundary(LAGB) increased with the increase of the heating temperature(highest fraction of LAGB at $925^{\circ}C$), indicating grain recovery upon intercritical heating. The main precipitate, $M_{23}C_6$, was found to be coarsened slightly at $760{\sim}850^{\circ}C$; it then dissolved at $850{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. Besides this, $M_3C$ cementite was formed at $900{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$. Finally, the experimental results show that the hardness of the steel depended largely on the matrix structure, rather than on the precipitates, with the fresh martensite showing the highest hardness value.
