  • We have investigated one dimensional steady flow model of a typical magnetic flux tube in the solar transition region constrained to observed Differential Emission Measure (DEM) for the average quiet-Sun deduced by Raymond & Doyle (1981) with a flux tube geometry conforming to Doppler shifts of UV lines measured by Chae, Yun & Poland (1998). Because local heating and filling factor in the transition region are not well known, we considered two extreme cases, one characterized by the filling factor= 1 ('filled-up model') and the other set by local heating=0 ('not-heated model'). We examined how much the heating is required for the flux tube by recomputing a model through adjustment of the filling factor in such a way that 'not-heated model' accounts for the observed DEM.

  • Usually, a window tends to have a lower thermal performance, than that of an ordinary wall. This study analyzes the enhancement of thermal performance of a window, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter is installed. The analyses were conducted at the laboratory, and with a full-scale mockup house, and the U-factor and heating load were examined. The laboratory results show that the U-factor increased by approximately 28%, when a Thermal Insulation Shutter was installed. The temperature difference was about $5^{\circ}C$, and this shows that the Thermal Insulation Shutter enhances the thermal performance of the window, when installed. The mockup house was used to calculate the heating load; the heating load was reduced by more than 41%, and shows that the installation of a Thermal Insulation Shutter is an effective way to reduce heating energy consumption.

  • For evaluating kinetic parameters of various reactions and materials a straight- forward method has been studied by the variable heating rate method in DSC analysis. Based on the linear relationship between the logarithm of the heating rate and reciprocal Peak temperature, this method allows calculation of activation energy and the Arrhenius frequency factor by only one observation of the peak temperature versus the heating rate. According to tile D function, D=-In P(x)/dx, to x(=$\frac{E}{RT}$) we can calculate reasonably accurate activation energy, tile Arrhenius factor and the rate constant, and predict half-life times of various materials from the kinetic calculation.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering multilayer piezoelectric actuator, PMN-PNN-PZT system ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3-Bi_2O_3$-CuO as sintering aids and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated as a function of heating rate. At sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, with increasing heating rate, electromechanical coupling factor(kp), mechanical quality factor(Qm) and dielectric constant $({\varepsilon}_r)$ were increased.

  • A novel high power factor Dual Half Bridge Series Resonant Inverter (DHB-SRI) for an induction heating appliance with multiple loads is proposed to remove the interferential acoustic noise caused by the difference between operating frequencies of adjacent loads. The circuit enables independent full power range control of two induction heating elements by one inverter circuit and has minimum switching losses due to the zero voltage switching characteristic. According to the mode analysis, I will explain the operation of the proposed circuit. To evaluate the required cooling capacity, loss analysis is performed through deriving some loss equations. In order to obtain the power factor correction capability and to lessen the system size, suitable design guides are given. Using the designed values, the proto-type circuit with 2.8kW power consumption for each induction heating element is built and tested to verify the operation of the proposed circuit.

  • As a radiant heating panel gets more popularity, the need to study on evaluation method of thermal output of the panel also becomes increasing. Generally, the chamber using method is applied to evaluate the thermal output through an experiment. However, the chamber using method cannot be used due to the limitations on space and cost. EN1264 addresses the test equipment to evaluate the thermal output by using simpler experimental setup, and introduces application method in detail. However, there is not enough description of control methods to meet the experiment condition, and it is difficult to meet this when practical experiment. Therefore, this paper analysed the control error factors of when the thermal output experiment is performed. When EN1264 method is applied to evaluate the thermal output of the radiant floor heating panel, the error factor which is caused by the characteristic of test equipment cannot be removed by the control methods of chamber using method. In addition, the error factor can be occurred at the element which is located out of the control system. These possible error factors are defined as the characteristic error factors.

  • College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, US Abstract The intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation of the ISO 13790 monthly method was examined. The current ISO 13790 method applies a reduction factor to the continuous heating and cooling need calculation result to derive the intermittent heating and cooling for each month. This paper proposes a method for the intermittent energy need calculation based on the internal mean temperature calculation. The internal temperature calculation procedure was introduced considering the heat-balance taking into account of heat gain, heat loss, and thermal inertia for reduced heating and cooling period. Then, the calculated internal mean temperature was used for the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation. The calculation results from the proposed method were compared to the current ISO 13790 method and validated with a dynamic simulation using EnergyPlus. The study indicates that the intermittent heating and cooling energy need calculation method using the proposed model improves transparency of the current ISO 13790 method and draws more rational outcomes in the monthly heating and cooling energy need calculation.

  • Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) systems utilize the immense renewable storage capacity of the ground as a heat source or sink to provide space heating, cooling, and domestic hot water. The main objective of the present study is to investigate the cooling and heating performance of a small scale GCHP system with horizontal ground heat exchanger (HGHE). In order to evaluate the performance, a water-to-air ground-source heat pump unit connected to a test room with a net floor area of 18.4 m2 and a volume of 64.4 m3 in the Korea Institute of Construction Technology ($37^{\circ}39'N$, $126^{\circ}48'E$) was designed and constructed. This GCHP system mainly consisted of slinky-type HGHE with a total length of 400 m, indoor heat pump, and measuring devices. The peak cooling and heating loads of the test room were 5.07 kW and 4.12 kW, respectively. The experimental results were obtained from March 15, 2011 to August 31, 2011 and the performance coefficients of the system were determined from the measured data. The overall seasonal performance factor (SPF) for cooling was 3.31 while the system delivered heating at a daily average performance coefficients of 2.82.

  • Analysis of radiation heating system for producing 60" size PDP panels was carried out using $RADCAD^{TM}$ software. Optimum arrangement of infrared heating elements was found to obtain uniform temperature distribution in PDP panel during heating. Heating capacity of each heater was determined to obtain an appropriate maximum panel temperature. Parametric study to find the effect of design parameters such as the thermophysical and optical properties of glass and cooling system was carried out. As a reference system, about 35 kW heating capacity was chosen to obtain about 800 K maximum panel temperature after 30 minute heating. The maximum temperature difference in panel was below 20 K. The maximum/minimum and its difference in the panel were very sensitive to the variation of the emissivity of glass and cooling block.

  • Heating value is the one of most important factor in energy use of the woods. This study was investigated for determining the heating value according to the moisture content level(%) of major broad-leaved tree in Korea. Heating value was decreased rapidly regardless the kinds of species (Liriodendron tulipifera, Alnus japonica, and Quercus mongolica) and parts of woods (wood part, and bark) as the moisture content (MC) was increased. In addition, bark had higher heating value than wood part. Liriodendron tulipifera showed the highest heating value among the other two species.
