  • For the design guide of a vessel operating in cold region, numerical analysis was carried out to evaluate the ice class louver which installed the heating cables by using ANSYS 13.0 CFX. The numerical analysis was performed by considering Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equation. This study based on the experimental results of ‘The Cryogenic Performance Evaluation for the Excellent De-icing Ice Class Louver’ in KRISO. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the ice class louver was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from 0℃ to –30℃ was considered in numerical analysis. Also the design guide for optimum de-icing presented through heating cable power capacity(33 W/m, 45 W/m, 66 W/m), location of the heating cable(front, center, behind on the blade) and relative velocity(1 m/s, 4 m/s, 7 m/s).

  • The snow melting system by electric heating wires which is adopted in this study is a part of road facilities to keep surface temperature of the road higher than freezing point of water for melting the snow accumulated on it. The system is designed to increase traffic safety and capacity. The electric heating wires are buried under paved road at a certain depth and operated automatically and manually. Design theory, amount of heating, and installation standard vary according to economic situation, weather condition, and installation place where the system applies. It is tried to figure out that the appropriate range of required heat capacity and installation depth and intervals for solving snowdrifts and freezing problems with the minimum electric power consumption. The most important factors to design the system are calculation of heating capacity depending on weather condition and depth and interval of the electric heating wires depending on air condition respectively. The study were performed under the range of the air temperatures($-2^{\circ}C,\;-5^{\circ}C,\;-8^{\circ}C$), the intervals of the electric heating wires(70mm, 100mm, 125mm), and the installation depths(50mm, 70mm, 100mm). The ready made commercial program package was used to verify the experimental results.

  • To reduce the fault current below the current capacity of a circuit breaker, researches on HTS (High Temperature Superconductor) power cables with fault current limiting (FCL) function are increasing. An FCL HTS power cable transports current with low a impedance during normal operation. Yet, it limits the fault current by an increased inductive or resistive impedance of conducting layer when quench occurs at the FCL HTS power cable by the large fault current. An inductive type FCL HTS power cable uses increased inductive impendence caused by leakage magnetic flux outside the cable core when the quench occurs at a shield layer losing the magnetic shielding effect. Therefore, it has an advantage of less resistive heating than resistive type FCL HTS power cable and temperature increase is suppressed. This paper describes an ideal circuit model for the FCL HTS power cable to investigate the effectiveness of increased inductive impedance when quench occurs at the shield layer. Then, FEM analysis is presented with a simplified model cable composed of various iron yokes to investigate the effect of the shape of yoke on the generation of the inductive impedance.

  • In this paper, we have investigated thermal properties by changing the content of carbon nanotube, which is component part of semiconductive shield in underground power transmission cable. Heat capacity (${\Delta}H$), glass transition temperature (Tg) and melting temperature (Tm) were measured with the samples of eight, through DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), and the measurement ranges of temperature selected from $-100[^{\circ}C]\;to\;100[^{\circ}C]$ with heating temperature selected per $4[^{\circ}C/min]$ Also, high temperature, heat degradation initiation temperature, and heat weight loss were measured by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) in the temperature from $0[^{\circ}C]\;to\;700[^{\circ}C]$ with rising temperature of $10[^{\circ}C/min]$. As a result, the Glass transition temperatures of the sample were showed near $-20[^{\circ}C]{\sim}25[^{\circ}C]$, and the heat capacity and melting temperature from the DSC was increased according to increasing the content of carbon nanotube, while, thermal diffusivity was increased according to increasing the content of carbon nanotube. Also, heat degradation initiation temperature from the TGA results was increasing according to increasing the content of carbon nanotube with CNT/EEA. Therefore, heat stabilities of EVA, which contained the we VA (vinyl acetate), showed the lowest.

  • In this paper, we have investigated thermal properties and Impurities content of specimens showing by changing the content of carbon black that is semiconductive materials for underground power transmission. Specimens were made of sheet form with the three of existing resins and the nine of specimens for measurement. Impurities content of specimens was measured by ICPAES(Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer). Heat capacity(ΔH) and melting temperature(Tm) were measured by DSC(Differential Scanning Calorimetry). The ranges of measurement temperature were from $0^{\circ}C$ to 20$0^{\circ}C$, and heating temperature was 4$^{\circ}C$/min. And then thermal diffusivity was measured by LFA 447. The measurement temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. Impurities content was highly measured according to increasing the content of carbon black from ICPAES results. And heat capacity and melting temperature from the DSC results were simultaneously decreased according to increasing the content of carbon black, while thermal diffusivity was increased according to increasing the content of carbon black. Because ionic impurities of carbon black containg Fe, Co, Mn, Al, and Zn were rapidly increasing kinetic energy by vibration of ionic impurities through the applied heat energy.

The numerical analysis was performed by considering Advection-Diffusion equation. This study based on the experimental results of 'A study on Anti-Icing Technique for Weather-Tight Door of Ice-Strengthened Vessels'(Jeong, et al., 2011a) in KIOST. For validation of the numerical analysis results, the cold chamber experimental data measured by the heat sensors in certain location of the weather-tight door was used. The external environmental temperature which varies from $5^{\circ}C$ to $-55^{\circ}C$ was considered in numerical analysis. Also three different heating cables which have the heat capacity of 33W/m, 45W/m and 66W/m were adapted for the design parameters to be the most efficient and guidelines for anti-icing design of the weather tight door.
