  • PURPOSE. Heat of composite polymerization (HP) indicates setting efficacy and temperature increase of composite in clinical procedures. The purpose of this in vitro experimental study was to evaluate the effects of 5 temperatures on HP of two new composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS. From each material (Core Max II [CM] and King Dental [KD]), 5 groups of 5 specimens each were prepared and their total HPs (J/gr) were measured and recorded, at one of the constant temperatures $0^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $23^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ ($2{\times}5{\times}5$ specimens) using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyzer. The data were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA, a Tukey's test, an independent-samples ttest, and a linear regression analysis (${\alpha}=0.05$). RESULTS. No polymerization reactions occurred at $0^{\circ}C$; then this temperature was excluded from statistical analyses. The mean HP of the remaining 20 KD specimens was $20.5{\pm}14.9$ J/gr, while it was $40.7{\pm}12.9$ J/gr for CM. The independent-samples t-test showed that there were significant differences between the HP of the two materials at the temperatures $15^{\circ}C$ (P=.0001), $23^{\circ}C$ (P=.0163), $37^{\circ}C$ (P=.0039), and $60^{\circ}C$ (P=.0106). Linear regression analysis showed statistically significant correlations between environment temperatures and HP of CM ($R^2=0.777$). CONCLUSION. Using CM is advantageous over conventional composite because of its better polymerization capacity. However due to its high HP, further studies should assess its temperature increase in vivo. Preheating KD is recommended. Refrigerating composites can negatively affect their polymerization potential.

  • The accurate engine output is basically one of important factors for the analysis of engine performance. Nowadays in-cylinder pressure analysis in internal combustion engine is also an indispensable tool for engine research and development, environment regulation and maintenance of engine. Here, it is essential more than anything else to find the correct TDC(Top Dead Center) position for the accuracy of engine output for diesel engine. Therefore this study is to analyze affecting factors to TDC position in 2-stroke large low speed engine and to suggest new method for determining correct TDC position. In the previous paper, it was mentioned that the accuracy of engine output is influenced by the determination of exact TDC position, and that 'Angle based sampling' method is better than 'Time based sampling' method in terms of precision. It was confirmed that there is 'Loss of angle', which is a difference between compression pressure peak and real TDC caused by heat loss and blow by of gas leakage. Consequently we invented new method, called "An improved method of time based sampling", which can obtain the correct engine output. The results by this method with compensating loss of angle was shown the same result by the 'Angle based sampling' method in encoder setting cylinder. This study is to suggest the new measuring method of exact engine output, and to examnine the reliance on the outcome.

  • Pyroprocessing has been developed for the purpose of resolving the current spent nuclear fuel management issue and enhancing the recycle of valuable resources. Pyroprocessing has been developed with the dry technologies which are performed under high temperature conditions excluding any aqueous processes. Pyro-processes which are based on the electrochemical principles require pretreatment processes and a voloxidation process is considered as a pretreatment step for an electrolytic reduction process. Various kinds of gas conditions are applicable to the voloxidation process and the understanding of Cs behavior during the process is of importance for the analyses of waste characteristics and heat load on the overall pyroprocessing. In this study, the changes of chemical compounds with the gas conditions were calculated by analyzing gas-solid reaction behavior based on the chemical equilibria on a Cs-Te-O system. $Cs_2TeO_3$ and $Cs_2TeO_4$ were selected after a Tpp diagram analysis and it was confirmed that they are relatively stable under oxidizing atmospheres while it was shown that Cs and Te would be removed by volatilization under reducing atmosphere at a high temperature. This work provided basic data for predicting Cs behavior during the voloxidation process at which compounds are chemically distributed as the first stage in the pyroprocessing and it is expected that the results would be used for setting up material balances and related purposes.

  • In this study, the humidity control effect of a counter-flow ventilator was analyzed in a greenhouse with high relative humidity at night in the winter season. A case of the counter-flow ventilator was 0.96 × 0.65× 0.82(W × D × H, m) and there were heat transfer element and two fans for air supply and exhaust in the counter-flow ventilator. Two counter-flow ventilators were used in this study and the setting humidity of the ventilators was 80%. The temperature and relative humidity at night(18:00-8:00) in the greenhouse were measured. In a greenhouse without a counter-flow ventilator, the average temperature and humidity was 14.9℃, 82.8%, respectively. When the counter-flow ventilator was operated, the corresponding averages were 15.1℃, 79.9%. The independent sample t test of monthly temperature and relative humidity showed no difference in temperature, and a significant difference in relative humidity with 1% of the significance level. Therefore, using the counter-flow ventilator helps to control relative humidity in greenhouse and increase yield.. And further research considering the pros and cons of using the counter-flow ventilator is needed.

  • This study investigated the fluidity, heat of hydration, setting time, strength development, and characteristics of hydration and pozzolanic reactions of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) blended cement pasts with the water-to-binder ratio of 20% by experiments, and analyzed the effects of the replacement ratio and fineness of GGBFS on the hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The results show that, in the high-strength mixtures with low water-to-binder ratio, the initial hydration is accelerated due to the "dilution effect" which means that the free water to react with cement increases by the replacement of cement by GGBFS, and thus, strengths at from 3 to 28 days were higher than those of plain mixtures with ordinary Portland cement only. Whereas it was found that the long term strength development is limited because the hydration reaction rates rapidly decreases with ages and the degree of pozzolanic reaction is lowered due to insufficient supply of calcium hydroxide according to large replacement of cement by GGBFS. Also, the GGBFS with higher fineness absorbs more free water, and thus it decreases the fluidity, the degree of hydration, and strength. These results are different with those of normal strength concrete, and therefore, should be verified for concrete mixtures. Also, to develop the high-strength concrete with high-volume of GGBFS, the future research to enhance the long-term strength development is needed.

  • Blended cement with fly ash and bottom ash from Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustor boiler(CFBC) burned at a low temperature, can be high heat of hydration and abnormal setting caused by higher volumn contents of Fe2O3, free-CaO, SO3. In this study, the ground CFBC bottom ash powder mixed with blast furnace slag was used as substitute activator of gypsum and recycled iron slag was produced from mix and pulverized by ball mill to increase the recycling rate. The effect on compressive strength of cements with the mixture of original and hydrated bottom ash mixtures with BFS with small water, respectively, was analyzed, and it was found that the hydrated bottom ash activator was more effective in initial strength development. To improve the initial strength of blended cement, an activator mixed with a blast furnace slag and bottom ash mixing ratio of 5:95 and 10:90, respectively, the slag cement by about 6%, and it was analyzed to develop an initial strength similar to gypsum as a conventional activator.

  • Recently the press and institute recognized fly ash as it had excellent performance. Its research and applications are on the rise largely as a substitute for cement. On the contrary, it is in a situation that the regulation of high quality fly ash remains at a low level. Accordingly, this study was to establish 8000 class of fineness of fly ash and three levels of substitute like 15%, 3 0%, and 45% in order to analyze the replacement ratio and effect of water-binder ratio for fly ash that affected the properties of ternary system concrete. As a result of experiment by planning water-binder ratio for two levels like 40% and 50%, it increased the fluidity in a fresh state, and it decreased the air content. This study has found out the setting acceleration and reduction of heat of hydration. As for the strength property in a set state, this study has shown the tendency of being equal or higher in age 28 days.

  • Orbicular granite gneisses occur as a xenolith within two-mica leucogranites, together with early Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary xenoliths, in Wangjeong-ri, Muju area. The whole-rock chemistries and SHRIMP zircon Pb/U ages of the leucogranites indicate that they are S-type granitoids formed in the continental tectonic setting at $1875{\pm}75$ Ma. The SHRIMP age of monazites from the orbicular granite gneiss gives $1867{\pm}4$ Ma as a metamorphic age which is similar to the intrusion age of the two-mica leucogranite within the error range. The similar ages between zircons and monazites represent that the orbicular granite gneisses formed by metamorphism during the intrusion of the two-mica leucogranite; the metasedimetary xenoliths which sank within the parent magma of leucogranites were metamorphosed into orbicular granite gneisses by thermal metamorphism ($650-740^{\circ}C$, 4-6.5 kbar) due to the heat supplied from surrounding magma. During the thermal metamorphism, the core of orbicular granite gneiss mainly consisting of cordierite formed, and in some orbicular granitic gneisses, the leucocratic melt formed by melting of quartz and plagioclase in the core, squeezed out from core and crystallized around the core forming outer rim. The hydrothermal fluid at the late stage of magma differentiation penetrated into the orbicular granite gneisses resulting pinitization of cordierite into chlorite and sericite. As Muju orbicula granite gneiss was formed from sedimentary rocks, it is more appropriate to be called Muju orbicula granitic gneiss.

  • A study to apply phase change material(PCM) to rapid hardening cement paste forming semi-rigid pavement was carried out. The characteristics fresh and hardened paste were evaluated through the experiment for a total of 6 mixtures according to the cement type and the substitution of phase change material for acrylate. The fluidity by substituting phase change material for acrylate satisfied the target flow time of 10 to 13 seconds. In case of setting time, it was possible to secure the performance of rapid hardening cement by substituting phase change material, and if the substitution ratio over 60%, the initial set occurred 1 to 2 minutes faster than other mixtures. In case of compressive strength and bond strength, it showed similar strength characteristics with the plain mixture, and it satisfied both the target compressive and bonding strength of 36MPa and 2MPa. The mixture substituting phase change material showed higher resistance to chloride ion penetration than the mixture only using acrylate and the OPC level was insufficient. From the results of physical and mechanical performances of semi-rigid pavement cement paste, the phase change material substitution rate of 20% was effective in the range of this study.
