  • Several studies have developed upward flame spread models which use somewhat different features. However, the models have not considered the transient effects of the igniter and the burning rate. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine a generalized upward flame spread model which includes these effects. We shall compare the results with results from simpler models used in the past in order to examine the importance of the simplifying assumptions. We compare these results using PMMA, and we also include experimental results for comparison. The results of the comparison indicate that flame velocity depends on the thermal properties of a material, the specific model for flame length and transient burning rate, as well as other variables including the heat flux by igniter and flame itself. The results from the generalized upward flame spread model can provide a prediction of flame velocity, flame and pyrolysis height, burnout time and position, and rate of energy output as a function of time.

  • This paper proposes non-destructive ESPI technique to evaluate inside defects of semiconductor package quantitatively. Inspection system consists of ESPI system, thermal loading system and adiabatic chamber. The technique has high feasibility in non-destructive testing of semiconductor and gives solutions to the drawbacks in previous technique, time-consuming and the difficulty of quantitative evaluation. In result, most of defects are classified in delamination, from which it is inferred to the insufficiency of adhesive strength between layers and nonhomogeneous heat spread. The $90\%$ of tested samples have a delamination defect started at the around of the chip which may be related to heat spread design.

  • The present study has been conducted to examine the effect of grid resolution on the predicted results for electric cable fire using pyrolysis model in FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator, version 5). The grid independent test for different grid resolutions has been performed for a PE coating cable and the grid resolution is defined by the non-dimensional characteristic length of fire and mean grid size. The calculated maximum heat release rate and mean flame spread rate were almost constant for higher grid resolution of 20${\sim}$25 and the computing time for the grid resolution takes approximately 20hours to solve flame propagation with pyrolysis model. The geometrical simplification of a electric cable dose not greatly affect on the maximum heat release rate and flame spread rate and the rectangular approximation of cable shape gives acceptable result comparing with the round cable with stepwise grid.

  • This paper is for response feature of fire detectors not only to analysis response feature of fire detector, but also to observe flame spread of inside-building and fire enlargement by using the row house which is supposed to be broken up. Many kinds of popular detectors such as heat type detector(differential type, fixed temperature type, Analogue type)and smoke type(light scattered type, Analogue type, single alarm type) were installed in the house in order to check for the change of temperature by installing of thermocouples. As a result, smoke detectors are better than heat detectors when it comes to making effective fire-detect system in the row house.

  • In general, when a building fire occurs, the heat flow rises by buoyancy, which affects the temperature rise of the ceiling. In addition, when the ceiling ignites, the fire spreads rapidly due to horizontal spread and radiant heat. According to the fire investigation, most of the large fires have a common characteristic that the fire spreads to the ceiling and causes many casualties. Therefore, it is considered that it is necessary to review the fire risk of ceiling materials used in buildings to prevent the spread of fire to the ceiling. Therefore, in this study, combustion characteristics such as the amount of heat released and ignition time of each SMC, DMC, and gypsum board were checked using a Cone Calorimeter, and the ignition temperature was calculated by substituting them into the fire theory. As a result, the ignition temperature of SMC was 449K, that of DMC was 1492K, and that of gypsum board was 677K.

  • This paper presents a study on the analysis for false alarm of heat detector using HRR(Heat Release Rate). And it is represented to threshold value and domain of false alarm. The HRR threshold value of false alarm is calculated to use parameters obtained by small scale fire-experiment. The experiment is conducted to measure detector activation time and flame spread of wood cribs fire, etc. The results show that HRR threshold value of Fixed type detector is 20.24 kW and rate of rise type detector is 13.59 kW, respectively.

  • As the high speed and high integration of semiconductor devices and the generation of heat increases resulted in the effective heat dissipation influences on the performance and lifetime of semiconductor devices. The heat resistance or heat spread function of EMC(epoxy molding compound) which protects these devices became one of very important factors in the evaluation of semiconductor chips. Recently, silica, alumina, AlN(aluminum nitride) powders are widely used as the fillers of EMC. The filler loading in encapsulants was high up to about 80 vol%. A high loading of filler was improved low water absorption, low stress, high strength, better flowability and high thermal conductivity. In this study, the thermal properties were investigated through thermal, mechanical and microstructure. Thermophysical properties were investigated by laser flash and differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). For detailed inspection of materials, the samples were examined by SEM.

  • Recently, multi-room type heat pump system has aroused much attention, because it can achieve much reduction of installation cost and space as well as energy saving in companion with the single room type heat pump system. In the present study, performance characteristics of a 3 room type inverter driven heat pump system, which is widely spread in Japanese market, are measured.. In the single room operation, performances of a heat pump system such s the difference of compressor outlet and inlet pressures and the mass flowrate may increase with the increase of cooling capacity so that COP of the system decrease with the increase of cooling capacity. However, in the 2 room operation, mass flowrate and COP of the total system increase markedly as compared with the single room operation.

  • In this paper, we used Helmholtz solver based on 3D finite element method to quantitatively analyze the effects of change of gain, time delay and time delay spread, which are the main variables of flame transfer function, on combustion instability in gas turbine combustor. The effects of the variable of flame transfer function on the frequency and growth rate, which are the main results of combustion instability, were analyzed by applying the conventional heat release fluctuation model and modified one considering the time spread. The analysis results showed that the change of gain and time delay in the same resonance mode affected the frequency of the given resonance modes as well as growth rate of the feedback instability, however, the effect of time delay spread was not relatively remarkable, compared with the dominant effect of time delay.

  • This paper aims to suggest the water curtain installation guideline for prevention of fire spread. The water curtain systems play a role in preventing fire spread which is caused by fire flames and radiation heat release from a fire source. The radiation attenuation ratio is affected by the water droplet size, vertical distance from the nozzle and flow rate. This study suggests the water curtain installation guideline as follows : (1) Investigation of a reference store array (2) Calculation of the number of drencher heads (3) Review of the relationship between droplet size and attenuation factor depending on the height of the drencher head (4) Review of a drencher head array and spray overlapping. The reference traditional market in which a fire compartment is installed using a water curtain can be predicted to have a radiation attenuation ratio of 50%.
